I find it fascinating that people want to have 5 #1s. Does everything need to be #1 to be good? Can everyone be above average? It's great at what it is. Isn't that enough?

Gotta keep the shareholders happy.

I'm kind of surprised they headline wasn't "iPhone 12 Mini not on list of top 7 selling phones", they missed a real opportunity there.

Apple's 5th most popular phone is nearly matching Samsung's most popular and slightly lags two budget Chinese phones.

If LG had made it, they'd probably still be in the business.

I dunno, still seems to me that it’s squeezing out a competitor from a top 10 spot.

Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if in two (three?) years this form factor becomes the SE form, as the old SE retires. So this period serves double duty: moving product, even if lower volume than hoped for, while creating manufacturing efficiencies that keeps that sweet margin in tact.

Nothing about the Mini is too small for the average iPhone buyer, except maybe the battery. If they took the same phone and made it their flagship in place of the standard iPhone 12 rather than have it as the spinoff "mini", it would sell just like the iPhone 12 that we actually got.

In fact, if they just made one iPhone 12 in the mini size but sold it as simply iPhone 12 with no other options but the Pro and Pro Max for those who want a larger phone, they could have gotten away with selling it at a base price of $799.

Yep, Apple should not support diversity of opinion and only support to most popular top few models.

Only someone indoctrinated into the Apple walled and protected garden would have such an opinion. While we are at we only need 2 or 3 models of cars, everything else is just a waste. Right, and lets quit building custom homes and appartments, all you need is a bed, kitchen, and someplace to consume your high tech fix. Heck, lets pad the walls and let you chose your color. Choice is so wasteful and any certified nanny would be appalled.
What’s better, reduce people’s ability to generate opinions on anything so we all have a far simpler life.
Ahem….. sorry, off topic.

For the story, mini will probably get discontinued soon, just like MacBook 2015. But still, Apple can afford to make such “mistakes” while still racking up billions in profit. Maybe mini will come back in some form, maybe SE will be the way forward. Only time will tell.

I love the fact that the 12 mini is not selling well. Back in the iPhone X days there were so many goobers stating that an iPhone X design in an SE package was an automatic buy. Where are these goobers now?

Well this goober is enjoying his white iPhone 12 mini 128gb. My 11 was a monstrosity compared to this.

Why would I care where, or if, it sits in the top 10 lists? Does my phone became less useful if it's not number one?

The iPhone 12 Mini has been my favorite iPhone purchase since the iPhone 5. Being able to use the phone with one hand and without using reachability is something I didn't realize I was missing.

If the pandemic is to blame for the mini, what's the excuse for the 12 and the 12 pro demand meeting expectations?
There is no need for an excuse. Many people use bigger phones as a primary device, while for me the SE1 is the fourth device. And they are meeting, but not exceeding expectations, which implies people holding out, not choosing bigger devices.

I really hope Apple doesn’t stop making the mini. I’m planning to upgrade my 11 Pro this year to the 13 Mini or whatever they call it.
Actually, I think will still produce it, but maybe even reduce the price in the future like they did with the iPhone XR just to boost the attractiveness. But I don’t see this phone in Apples line up probably more than three years with refreshes.

Those from the UK, i just checked Amazon, and the 12 Mini is currently on sale for £599 for the blue/ green, and £624 for the other colours in 64gb. The 128gb versions are also on discount, but they are selling fast so grab yourself a bargain while you can on this amazing phone.

I regret not getting one. Couldn't wait and got a 12 Pro before even seeing one. But now that I've held one, I wish I had the smaller phone. I was concerned about print size for being able to read the screen, but I usually need glasses anyway and can read both just as well when I have them on. I don't really need the Pro Camera though if there was a Mini Pro, I'd probably have bought that. I think if the mini had been available from day 1 I would have gone for it. And now kind of disappointed that there probably won't be a smaller phone available the next time I upgrade.

...Why does MacRumor feel compelled to **** all over the iPhone12 mini? Do they have something against smaller phones? I swear every 15 articles that's not marketing is some iphone12 hate.

The people who have them, myself included, love them to death. Please stop. Let us be.

I find these reports hard to believe; in China alone they sell ~ 50M phones a month and they don’t even register on these lists? Apple sells <25M phones a month and yet supposedly has 4 models in the worldwide top 5? Unless there 1’000’s of brands and models in China something doesn’t quite stack up (...and that’s ignoring other huge markets like India?)

Amusing how all the bars are out of proportion to each other

7th place is still very good, and above the much cheaper SE. It is the iPhone I want, but I barely use my iPhone while stuck at home, so not upgrading yet. Sales for the most portable phone are the most likely to be reduced by lack of mobility during the pandemic.
Yeah it's like MR wants a narrative about it being a complete failure. However, it's one of the top-10 selling phones and Apple's happy enough to keep making them.

Sigh... whatever!

In the end, what happened was that the iPhone SE (2020) cannibalized a lot of sales of the iPhone 12 mini with its lower price for the 64 GB and 256 GB models. Especially given the fact that the face mask mandate made Touch ID on the iPhone SE (2020) a lot more useful than anticipated.
I haven't seen a Mini out in the wild where I live, but if I did, it won't make me angry. I'm not sure I can say the same for some of our members on here.
This is such a silly rhetorical device. As if any people on this forum who dislike the Mini are somehow "angry" people; so angry in fact, they might hurl one off a bridge.

No, people who don't like the iPhone Mini are not "angry;" they're just expressing their displeasure on this relatively new device in an enthusiast forum.

Stop trying to make those who disagree with you look irrational or hysterical.

If it really is the 7th best selling smartphone of all the phones that can be purchased, is the iPhone 12 mini really a failure or disappointment? I can definitely see how it's surely selling much less than other iPhone models but compared against other smartphones, I'm sure it's selling really well. If in just iPhone-land it's selling better than the SE, I would hope that would justify enough keeping it around. If anything, I'm sure having it around increases the ASP of the iPhone as it increased the cost of the regular 12 compared to the 11.
I would say yes, at least for Apple. 1% vs 4%, 5%, and 6% is pretty stark.

MacRumors attempts to paint the 12 mini as a failure are both obvious and pathetic and I do not understand why. So it’s not the #1 most popular phone in the world. It’s primarily being beat by its siblings. It’s outselling all three Android models. 1% of ALL Smartphones sold in the world for January is still in the millions of phones. Drop the hate already it’s making you look bad.
Pretty sure Macrumors is not as emotionally invested in the iPhone 12 Mini as you apparently are. They're just reporting information.
