I guess that is what Veinticino means. Form factor is mini in ipad but the rest is full fledged. But with mac it is form factor AND lower specs. And since you have SE in iPhone, the MINI here could be form factor with SE for lower specs.

the fact that we're debating this is proof that the clarity of the line up is long gone.
There’s really not much to debate, is there. Mini clearly refers to size. That’s it. Whatever other features it may or may not have, it means the smallest. Just as Pro refers to the high end of the line.

To me, the suffix “mini” still implies feature reduced rather than a full-fledged compact form factor.

This has been very true for Samsung 'Mini' phone models through the years since almost the dawn of smartphones. That is probably where you get that impression. But look at the solid specs of the iPad Mini, as others have said.

I wonder what this means for the iPhone SE.

Looks like the entry models of the iPhone 12 are going to priced quite competitively, slotting in where the current 11 (non pro) sits in the lineup. Starting at ~£700 for the 5.4" 64GB model, going up to ~£850 for the 5.4" 256GB model.

This fragmentation of product naming is getting absurd. This is so unlike the Apple we all knew.
You mean the Apple that was almost bankrupt and could only afford to make one product in each of the four quadrants? Good times... not.

Apple still uses the four quadrants, they simply have multiple products in each of the quadrants.

Why some people want fewer or only one choice is really weird to me. Is having a few choices in a $300-1,000 price somehow scary? People aren’t stupid, they can handle a couple different choices when they’re getting ready to open their wallet.

btw, having more and more color choices is awesome too. I’m sure some would just prefer a single color though.

Yup, the iPad mini is no slouch. A 65W 6C/12T i7, 64GB max RAM, 2TB SSD, four Thunderbolt 3 ports, a $100 10GbE option... this isn’t Jobs’s 2005-2010 “switcher” machine.

ETA: lol yeah Mac mini not iPad mini 🤣

So yeah the iPad mini is well-featured as mentioned. Up until the 2020 re-design, the mini and the Air had almost the same specs, just different sized screens, with the mini 5 having a slightly higher pixel density at 326 ppi vs. the 264 ppi of the Air and every other retina iPad (including all iPad Pro).

I’ve got a mini 4, it’s getting pretty slow with the 2014 A8 but with 2GB of RAM is still supported through the current iOS 14. I assume it won’t get iOS 15.

I hope it gets the new design language like the Air 2020, I don’t see why not. Next year or more likely 2022, I’d guess; the A12 will be perfectly fine until the A14 or A15. I’d expect the physical size to stay the same but the screen increase to ma 8.6” with a change in aspect ratio from the current 4:3.

What’s wrong with Pro and mini? Apple’s used them for a decade or two.

For one, an iPhone is not a Pro device no matter which way you cut it. Especially when you can get a phone with similar specs for $400 less (11 vs 11 Pro). A few extra bells and whistles will not boost your productivity. That is what separated Macs for years. Even today there is a major difference between the MacBook Air and the Macbook Pro. The same does not apply to the IPhone.

I do like the Mini name. The products with the name were exactly that. iPod Mini, Mac Mini, etc... They weren’t touted as powerful, but devices that were more friendly and approachable. The iPhone 12 mini has a nice ring to it. It will look extra cute next to the ridiculous “Pro” Max.

Since the bigger regular iphone will be the same size as the smaller pro iphone, giving it plus/max suffix would be confusing.
Adding ‘mini’ suffix to the smaller iphone make more sense.

So for the fans of the smaller devices, important to note it's going to be:

iPhone 12 mini

Not iPhone 12 Pro mini
That's been known (well, all rumours have said it) for some time.
But realistically if you want a smaller device what has the "Pro" got that would change your mind? Yes, if you prefer a larger phone then the only reason to buy a 12 rather than a 12 Pro is money, but none of the rumours suggest any extras that would make me even consider the bigger phone.

Goody Gum Drops!! 🤩

to me, wanting a high end fully featured smartphone in a compact design is always look to Sony for that. Yes I know it’s Android but for a time they had the best least intrusive skin and best battery life of the bunch.

funny now, Sony ONLy makes 6.1” or larger phones now.

Apple will now make the worlds BEST compact smartphone. Yes!

Unfortunately, still not as small as the SE.
See this photo from the iPhone 12 round-up:

I've come to accept "pro" being used for everything with a higher than average price tag nowadays, but "mini" and "max" just don't sound good. I know it's just names and it doesn't matter, but what was so wrong with "plus" and "something-other-than-mini"?

iPhone 12 Pro Plus just sounds weird especially with Pro Plus being a caffeine stimulant tablet brand here in the UK...

I really think Apple need to start removing the number and these silly names at the end of their iPhone line up... it would be so much better naming them...

iPhone 2020 (5.4 inch)
iPhone 2020 (6.1 inch)
iPhone Pro 2020 (6.1 inch)
iPhone Pro 2020 (6.7 inch)

I really can’t imagine in 10 years time we will have the iPhone 22 Pro Max or the iPhone 22 Mini 😂😂😂

the stock price of that era tell a different story. Admitted that there is a pre iphone apple and a post iphone apple where things have gone crazy, but stocks where doing very good in the five years pre iphone days. Product line was not too shabby either. I didn't see bankrupcy looming somewhere in the early 00's

I agree with you. Choice is not the problem. If there is any problem at all, seeing the sales figures. But more choice is not a bad thing.

It is just my personal opinion that the line up branding could use some consistency. This branding is rather messy.

Not a single color, but don't really need so many options either. It just makes logistics a nightmare. It bothers me more on the Apple Watch - absolutely no reason to bundle the band with the watch anymore. Price the watch the same and they you choose your free band - simple. I remember with the 4 I wanted the Nike version with a specific band. While they had several Nike versions available and the band I wanted separately available they were always out of stock of the combo for months in store (and shipping was out 4-6 weeks). So my options were to buy a version with a band I didn't want and then buy the band I wanted separately (for $50 more) or wait... And now with the all the loop sizes... sigh.

Also interesting that the non-pro model and pro model will have the same dimensions and camera area despite the 12 only being rumoured to come with 2 camera's!

If this leak is real, I’m glad because it confirms that the redesign is also coming to the non-Pro models.

As far as the camera area, just look at the current iPhone 11. Despite having only two cameras, Apple put them into a squared off area that’s the same size as the triple-camera area on the Pro models.

My question is: since the 12 pro will be increased in size to 6.1”, does that mean it’ll be bigger than the 11 pro? Or the footprint stays the same because of a reduction on bezel? Does anyone have any info on this?
