The case/and or protector and or grounding (or perhaps power input to the panel) is effecting that threshold of change required.
Yeah that’s probably a good guess tbh.
Cause it just works too consistently when you’re actually using the phone yknow?

Got a Belkin screen protector today, didn’t use my phone till I got in the car and had this issue. I think I passcode locked my phone (power + vol button) a few times and was able to swipe up and enter my code. It’s been fine since.

Edit: this was for me having trouble swiping up to unlock the phone. I currently have an issue turning the flashlight on with my thumb, if I use the tip of my thumb or any other finger it turns on easily.

Edit 2: deff is a software issue, tried to passcode unlock my phone again by mashing my thumb and it had issues, but using ‘less contact’ worked. Using the bulk of my thumb outside of the lock screen works fine.

Hi all,

I am also experiencing this issue. I have a Spigen glass protector and a 3rd party case attached and have the same problems.

Many say that it might be a grounding issue but Apple has put something interesting in the iOS 14.2 changelog. Check the 3rd topic: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211808

It seems they had a lockscreen issue before and it seems that it’s not yet perfectly fixed. Maybe someone has installed iOS 14.3 Beta 1 already and can check on whether or not the issue might already be fixed?

The capacitive differences required in the touch screen could be software set differently in the Lock Screen to the Home Screen ( perhaps to stop false readings when in your pocket etc)
The case/and or protector and or grounding (or perhaps power input to the panel) is effecting that threshold of change required.

To add further. Perhaps the electrical current across the screen is set smaller in an attempt to reduce power usage , and it’s a little to low once a screen protector is thrown into the mix , adding extra resistance , so therefore reduces any capacitive changes.
Maybe it’s set lower for the mini screens as opposed to other models.

Just sent feedback / bug report. Is it worth returning the phone at this point? Or is it same to assume if it is a hard ware issue it will be covered by Apple even if you bought the phone from a carrier?

This is definitely going to be covered by Apple if it’s hardware. I wouldn’t return phone yet.

I figured out why the touchscreen is unresponsive, here is the video youtube. but im no engineer, someone who knows more about conductivity look at this video and see if this can be fixed by software or not, if not this is a big problem.

I’ve only had my mini for half a day, but I’m not experiencing this issue. I’m using the Belkin screen protector Apple sells, with a Ringke clear tpu case.

Wow, this is it. For me it isnt the power button, but the volume buttons. 100% repro. That would explain why taking off the case helps.

It happens to me as well. At first I though it was the screen protector but it happens only when I have my MagSafe silicon case on it. It is pretty annoying.

The solution is quite easy. It's indeed a grouding issue. You can perfectly reproduce this by just keeping the glass screen protector applied and removing the case. Then put the iPhone on a plain surface and tap on the screen. Try to hide your mouth so Face ID can't unlock. Then just use your fingers and try to enable the flashlight or the camera. It won't work. If you touch the side of the phone with your other hand and press one of the buttons simultaneously it works without problems.

So the applied glass screen protector seems to change the 'electricity flow' on the device in a way it just doesn't work properly anymore.

There is just ONE more thing that you guys can try: What happens if you do the above WITHOUT a screen protector installed? Put the iPhone mini on a plain surface, wear a mask and just touch the phone with a single finger on the flashlight button. Does it work?

Edit: Another possible thing to test is to install iOS 14.3 Public Beta 1 and see if things change...

Having the same issue with unresponsive torch and camera buttons and intermittent unlocking. From reading all the comments it looks like there is more than one issue at play..

Some people are reporting that moving the case away from the power and/or volume buttons solves the issue, but this doesn’t work for me.

Others have stated the opposite, that putting more pressure on the case by trying to put your finger in the small mute button hole to touch the side of the phone fixed it, this also doesn’t work for me.

And finally some have stated that having the phone plugged in solves the issue, this does work for me.. but has anyone noticed the other end of the cable doesn’t even need to be plugged in to a power source, just having a lead dangling from the phone is enough to solve the issue.

I spoke briefly to apple chat last night and he wanted me to check with other magsafe accessories to see if it was the magsafe causing the issue, but i told him I didn’t have anymore magsafe accessories.🙄

Removed the TGSP and case. Tried the above and placed the phone down on a flat surface, mask on, and touch the phone with my thumb. It didn’t work. However, it always works with the tip of my thumb and the pointer finger for example.

Do you have a screen protector installed? Or is it just the plain phone?

It seems that the issue only occurs if there's a screen protector installed. You can then reproduce it by either attaching a case or not touching the sides of the phone while tapping on the lock screen.

This issue has me so pissed. Personally the number one reason is the fact that I also have the 12 pro and had been using it since launch, with the exact same cases and screen protectors with absolutely no issues whatsoever. I was excited to try the mini size and compromise the pro stuff, after throwing out 2 non Amazon more expensive screen protectors and grappling with the issue of either case and no screen protection or vice versa, I think this one is going back to Apple store today. For the amount of money we should not be beta testers nor should we have to choose to compromise our protection choices until they come up with a solution. My ocd has me through the roof.

Call me crazy. I don’t mind but this is the first time in a long time that I’m fed up with being a guinea pig. Can anyone relate? Yes I know first world problems...

Right after I got my iPhone 12 Mini I put on a PanzerGlass screen protector and started using it.
My problem is touch on the lock screen, if i try to use the torch or pause/play music it only respons sometimes.
After i unlock the iPhone touch works great, but on the lockscreen I have to get lucky with the touch to get the response.
Anyone else having this issue?
Having same issues but it appears to be the MagSafe case. I have no issues opening or using torch, camera, or audio with no case. Does not work well with case. Anyone else notice this?

Hi folks, I have the same problem when something cover it's back then screen motion is really terrible I can't even unlock it or use e.g. a flashlight / camera icon. If the phone is connected to charger then the problem does not exist.

My setup:
Case SPIGEN SLIM ARMOR
PanzerGlass Mini CF AG

Video 1: without case and with glass the error appears when I put phone e.g. on the table (the Iphone back has to be completely covered by something)

Video 2: with case and with glass the error appears all the time

Video 3: with case and with glass the error DOES NOT APPEAR when the phone is charging

I am also having the same problem with magsafe silicon case and spigen protector installed. Removed one protector and putting it again didn't solve the problem. Not sure whether it's a software problem or hardware issue.
