It is a new form factor, is it not?

While you're laughing, go ahead and point out the previous iPhone Mini.

I'll wait...
Slightly different form factor != gen 1 of a product.
Even iPhones that kept the same physical design, such as 6, 7 and 8 aren’t identical inside. So by your criteria every phone is a unique generation, which renders the entire thing pointless because you could never have a second generation.

A temporary work around that bypasses Lock Screen swipe

Settings > Accessibility > Back Tap > toggle on > set to home

From Lock Screen double tap the back of your case, and it will take you directly to Home Screen with no swiping involved.

If you are prompted with the passcode screen, simply double tap the back of your case and your passcode will automatically be inputted and send you to Home Screen.

With this work around, you shouldn’t need to use tin foil on the side of the case or touch the camera circles.

If you have a case and no screen protector, it works fine. If have a screen protector and no case, it works fine. It’s when you try and use both at once that the problem shows.
Not true. I have a screen protector but no case and still have this issue.

When I made the post, I hadn’t seen any report such as yours. Since the post, you and another member have alerted to either a case by itself or a screen protector by itself causing a problem as well.

Use the work around I posted and you shouldn’t have a problem.

I have had the Zagg screen protectors on an Xr, 11 Pro Max and have no problems with them. I have already purchased them for our new 12 Pro Max (that UPS should hopefully finally actually deliver on Tuesday after failing miserably on Friday).
That doesn't mean they will work on the mini. I have a belkin screen protector on my 12 Pro Max and it works without issue. But the same type of belkin screen protector on my Mini makes the lock screen completely useless.

There is either something wrong with the screens of the mini's or its a software issue.

Which is why I am going to wait it out a bit. To find out exactly what the problem is before diving in and buying it. Hopefully it is a software fix that can be easily remedied. I don't have an Apple store (or a Sprint/T-mobile one either) anywhere near me, so I would hate to have to send it back to Apple and wait for a replacement.

Also it will give me time to actually see one of these these devices in person. It sounds like just the phone I was looking for. But for now...will wait it out just a bit longer.

I didn't have or notice problems until I put on a screen protector.
Typically I don't use one, but read about some people saying they thought the new glass while might be better for breakage, seemed to scratch easier. Guess that was a bad idea. I haven't removed it yet.

My problem seems to have gone away by removing the screen protector.

what are you talking about?

its all the same stuff inside(change in hardware specs)....your saying a reduction in screen or increase in screen would be a new gen product? you have no experience in products cycles.

in that case every apple product is a new gen right....new parts ....changes in specs. do some research.

It is certainly something to do with ground. The torch icon on the Lock Screen doesn’t work for me at all when the phone in mag safe otter box case and when operating with one hand, index of another hand woks well. Also works great without the case. I decided to experiment and placed a piece of baking foil under the case and placed a part of it so it can contact with my little finger - the torch icon and the screen generally now both work well with this experimental workaround.

for those who have this issue that I had too, I’ve now tried a different case (brand caseology) and I don’t see the issue anymore! The previous case was ESR that I bought from Amazon. I think that’s the issue guys.

Try another case first!

Which caseology case are you using?

Same problem here. Iphone12 Mini with glass protector and Apple case. Found a fix on Twitter that is using some aluminum foil. Put some aluminum foil as in the tweet and touch it while swiping on the Lock Screen. This worked for me. It’s not the nicest fix and I hope apple can do something about it with a software fix. Think it has to do with a ground/earth problem.

I have question. Why is this issue present just at lockscreen? and absolutely no issue during using the cellphone? Looks like problem with static energy but why just on lockscreen and just with thumb?

Havnt tried the No screen protector.
Single hand + screen protector + case = fail
Hold phone on one hand + use fingers from another hand + screen protector + case = >70% chance works

A significant number of new iPhone 12 mini owners are reporting Lock Screen sensitivity issues since receiving their phones. The MacRumors forum has a post running several pages describing the issue, and the thread has been shared on Reddit, where more users are reporting similar problems.

Specifically, the problem manifests for most users when swiping up from the bottom of the Lock Screen using their thumb to unlock the device, or when pressing the torch or camera buttons on the Lock Screen.

The display doesn't always recognize the press or the swipe up to unlock. Other fingers seem to have more luck and the sensitivity issues end once the iPhone 12 mini is unlocked.

Some users speculate that the lack of responsiveness could be a conductivity or grounding issue, because there are reports that it resolves itself when the handset is plugged into a wall charger, or when touching the frame without a case.

However, there's no consensus yet on what's causing the problem and whether it's hardware or software related, but hopefully it's the latter and Apple can release an update to resolve the issue soon.

The issue appears to be only with the lock screen sensitivity. I only see the sensitivity issue at the lock screen, not anywhere else. I have a screen protector on and if I use the tips of my fingers I have no issues typing in the passcode, it's only when I use the flat part of my finger. Once in, I have no issues typing or selecting apps using my fingers.

guys, i spoke with the apple support and explained the issue.
He suggested to update to iOS 14.2 and in case it still got the same issue, contact them again.

I updated now to 14.2 and so far it seems working fine.
Give a try !

Already on 14.2 and not working.

I have also tried inserting the lighting cable into the phone and holding the USB end between my fingers and it works perfectly. Guess I'll have to carry my cable around and touch it with the other hand whilst trying to activate the camera from the lock screen. I thought going back to the mini would mean one handed use but looks like Apple still wants you to use two hands. :)

I am using iPhone 11 from November 19 and not found any issues such like this and now deciding to buy latest version of iPhone12.....

Really bummed to hear people are having such trouble with the mini. I picked up a new one yesterday for myself, really like the form factor. I'm one of those lunatics who has been an iphone user since the first one and never used a case. I just don't like them. I don't really drop my phones so I guess there is that, though I did have one fall out of my tshirt pocket many years ago now and fall into a lake I was staring down into haha. That was a total loss no case would have solved since the lake was at the college where I work and the thing was filled with duck and goose crap. No diving in there!

Anyway, sans case and screen protector I've had no issues with my touch screen in any scenario. Curious to see how this resolves given a case and or screen protector can apparently cause such an issue. I hope this gets solved quickly for all those affected.
