Most likely ceramic shield displays not friendly with tempered screen protectors but that doesn't explain why this issue not reported for 12 , 12 Pro & 12 Pro Max, may be as someone mentioned, Mini display panel only has two pins while others have three pins. Looks like a major issue for those who are particular with case & screen protector.

I can say that I have this issue with a case and screen protector. I just took my cart off and the buttons work as well as swiping. It’s only with both a case and screen protector that the issue is present.

Mine works fine, clear tpu case no screen protector
Right. It’s when you have both. As long as your hand can touch the physical body of the phone in certain places (frame, screen, camera lens frame), it’ll work fine.

guys, i spoke with the apple support and explained the issue.
He suggested to update to iOS 14.2 and in case it still got the same issue, contact them again.

I updated now to 14.2 and so far it seems working fine.
Give a try !
I believe most of us updated to 14.2 the day we got the phone. And updating to 14.3 won’t fix it either. Apple needs to specifically address this problem.

Also issues as described: with esr screen protector and silicon case.

Lock Screen is hit and miss for passcode, mostly miss, flashlight and camera buttons work 2/10 times.

Thought I would share my experience too. Glad to see this thread as I was a bit frantic in line at Coscto and unable to open my phone to show my membership card. stopped by the AT&T store and the person there used their other hand to push the buttons while holding it and it worked- was weird.

The issues are only on the lock screen (when punching in the password or using the camera or flashlight).

So after reading stuff here I took off my screen protector and case and it worked fine. Put the case back on and it worked, but not perfectly. Put another screen protector on and took off the case- no problem. Put both on- problem is back.

I was running 14.1. Upgraded to 14.2- no difference.

Spoke with Apple yesterday as well as today. The agents hadn't heard of this problem, but were able to find info about it once they did some digging. I was given to a "supervisor" today. They are passing along my info to engineering and I should expect a call back on Tuesday.

Hoping a software update fixes things as I want to keep a smaller phone. Will keep you posted if I learn anything- but odds are someone else will know something first.

Look at those sausage fingers. 😂 How in the world is a person with such thick fingers using an iPhone 12 Mini!?
Obviously, they used a hand model with extra-large hands to push the narrative that the 12 Mini is "tiny", when in actuality, it is still too large. The original SE would be a much more manageable size (and would look about like this in a normal hand).

A work around for all you to try is set up the back of the phone as the Home button. From Settings got to Accessibility, Touch, scroll down to Back Tap, Double Tap and select Home! Doing that, no need to swipe up with your finger after face id unlock action occurs.

It looks like the news is spreading about this problem. Yahoo finance asked Apple for a comment.

If you have a iPhone 12 mini, please help yourself and the rest of us by contacting Apple ASAP. This needs to be fixed. Don’t depend on someone else to report to Apple. We need to keep the pressure on Apple.

Hopefully the bigger outlets continue to pick up on it.

what are you talking about?

its all the same stuff inside(change in hardware specs)....your saying a reduction in screen or increase in screen would be a new gen product? you have no experience in products cycles.

in that case every apple product is a new gen right....new parts ....changes in specs. do some research.
So previous iPhones were 5G capable? A new form factor doesn't warrant different (gen 1) internals?

Yea, OK.

Regardless, you can't argue around the fact that this is a new problem, introduced by this device.

But hey, the whole alternative facts/conspiracy theories thing is going around , so, you know, believe what you want.

Definitely appears to be a conductivity situation. I'm willing to bet everyone with the case+screen protector situation is holding their phone with one hand and trying to unlock it with your thumb. If you try to hold it with both hands and unlock it, that also doesn't work. But if you hold it with one hand and then use just one finger from the other hand to touch the screen, it works everytime. Basically, the hand touching the screen can't be touching any other part of the phone at the same time. Needless to say they need to fix this, as one-handed operation is a big selling point of this particular phone. It does make me wonder if this is a problem on all the phones, but most people with the larger phones don't try to use it with one hand due to size, but I might be totally wrong about that.

Anyone with a tempered glass screen protector and a case not having this problem and think we're all crazy? I'd love to hear what case you have. I wonder if different case materials are less problematic than others. I'm currently using Peel's Super Thin Iphone 12 mini case, so obviously it's not a matter of case thickness.

EDIT: I just realized from another forum that it's a matter of how much of your finger is in contact with the screen. If you use just the tip of your thumb it tends to work consistently, vs using it flat which comes more naturally.

To sum up:

Rule of Thumb, Just the tip :).

A significant number of new iPhone 12 mini owners are reporting Lock Screen sensitivity issues since receiving their phones. The MacRumors forum has a post running several pages describing the issue, and the thread has been shared on Reddit, where more users are reporting similar problems.

Specifically, the problem manifests for most users when swiping up from the bottom of the Lock Screen using their thumb to unlock the device, or when pressing the torch or camera buttons on the Lock Screen.

The display doesn't always recognize the press or the swipe up to unlock. Other fingers seem to have more luck and the sensitivity issues end once the iPhone 12 mini is unlocked.

Some users speculate that the lack of responsiveness could be a conductivity or grounding issue, because there are reports that it resolves itself when the handset is plugged into a wall charger, or when touching the frame without a case.

However, there's no consensus yet on what's causing the problem and whether it's hardware or software related, but hopefully it's the latter and Apple can release an update to resolve the issue soon.

I inserted a small piece of tin foil between the phone and the case in the bottom left hand corner. If I touch the tin foil as I try to use the torch or camera switches, they work fine. If I do not, they don't. Also, the screen unlocks very easily if I touch the tin foil. Appears to reinforce the idea of a grounding issue of some sort. Forgot to mention I have a leather case, and a glass protector, and I am using one hand.

According to your logic every phone is a 1st gen.......
No, but here you go.

This should clear things up a bit regarding what I mean:

Original iPhone, 3G, 3GS: 3 gens
iPhone 4 -4S: 2-gens
iPhone 5, 5s, 5c, 1st SE : 4 gens
iPhone 6, 7, 8, New SE: 4 gens (you could argue that the 7, 8 and new SE are separate, because they remove the headphone jack)
iPhone 6+, 8+: 2 gens
iPhone X, Xs, Xr, 11: 4 gens
iPhone Xs Max, 11 Pro Max: 2 gens

iPhone 12, Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max: ALL 1st gen

That is what I will try, just set up my phone today and exactly same issue. Took the MagSafe case off and it immediately began to work. I have the mini, waiting on a 12 and Pro for family members, hope not an issue with those size phones too.
Thank you everyone for confirming I was not going crazy...

I’ve had Lock Screen touch issues too. But I don’t see how it could be related to hardware, since everything works perfectly once unlocked. Glass, copper and aluminum couldn’t know/care it’s a Lock Screen they’re showing. Only software or firmware would.

For me it seems that some interactions cause some process to get stuck for a moment. For instance, upon entering the code, it could be the fifth number that’s not registered. Some seconds later it works. Sometimes it needs a screen off moment before working again.

During this glitch, long press doesn’t work either. The notification stands out, enlarges and stays focused for a moment, then goes back to normal. No menu shown, screen unresponsive for a sec. Can’t invoke actions though long presses, formerly 3D Touch.

Swiping the notification, same thing. It moves to left, no menu shown, animation gets stuck for a sec, returns to normal. At other times it works.

Notification Center has the same glitches, even after unlocking. Left swipe isn’t reliable there either.

Summary: Notification Center and Lock Screen are glitchy for me. Other screens aren’t.

I would suggest calling support, adding some volume to complaints. Ask for a supplemental software update ASAP. They might suggest a reinstall but that’s overkill in my opinion. I doubt they can help with any standard procedure, other than firmware or software.

I’ll live with it and wait for an update. Apple internals will no doubt experience this as well this week.

Edit: Added multiple observations after the initial post
