Because we're 'commitment to the environment'. I feel Apple very openly insults our intelligence more and more these days. So it'll save the environment when we buy a USB-C charger in another box - possibly with worse packaging?

So is it possible its' just greed and bigger profit margins Apple? Just be honest.

Not defending anyone here , but thats not the logical POV , if NO ONE has a charger , then sure you are right , but most ppl have chargers aplenty , for me what goes bad is usually the cords , they get thrown around and getting damaged , the power bricks never broke on me so I have tons of them through the years.

We’ve had USB-C on Macs since March of 2015, so don’t act like this is some brand new to everyone technology. It’s still Lightning on the iPhone end, which means users can still use a Lightning to USB cable and USB charger if they already own one. This is a non-issue for everyone but the perpetual complainers when they have to buy a damn cable and complain bitterly about a few bucks for a new cable.
Everyone owns newer Macs? And everyone has previous Lightning cables or those that are still in good shape to last more and more years?

Huge transportation, storage and material savings for Apple, that is the one and only reason why they’ve done it. Any other reasons are a happy side effect, though you can be sure they are the ones the marketing team will focus on.
Yep lol,

iPhone 12 Mini, the perfect answer to those still complaining and want smaller iPhone like older SE. You got the best of both world. Smaller size foot print and most uptodate tech. Hope, iPhone 12 Mini makes them happy or keep them quite.
iPhone SE, 11,12 and Pros are all excellent line up. Though I like to see future SE3 with TouchID moved to power button keeping the same frame size,$399 price, offering bit larger screen area.

Do people understand that the only thing that changed in the cable is the end that plugs into the wall? It's still lightning. So if you have used lightning cables in the past, they still work to charge the new phones. If you want to charge faster, buy a USB C block.

People also aren't mentioning that the starting config on the Pro is 128GB. For me, take the block and give me more memory in exchange for the cost difference. I have a ton of USB C and its honestly a better wired charging experience anyway.

I wonder how the "carbon footprint" of having to buy an iPhone, a charger and a pair of headphones separately, compares to buying an SKU with all three in the same box (/rhetorical).

...... and customers, will also have to pay more.

Nearly every single person buying an iPhone already has "headpones", "charging cable" and "usb block". Why would they buy new ones?

But they changed which power adapter is needed by including a different cable now, which means that many if not even most who have those power adapters already won't really be able to use most of them.

Exactly, didn't those just start shipping with the 11s? Can't remember if the iPhone X had a USB-C charging brick (doubtful). SO dumb. So selling bricks separately to 75% of consumers after they buy their phone someone saves the environment?!
Only the 11 Pro came with the USB-C adapter

Well, they are changing which power adapter is needed by including a different cable, so there's that.

And where's the saving passed to the consumers? Great if you are an exec in Apple. More $$ in your pockets.
I don't tend to look at it that way. Rather than, "Where is my extra two bucks or whatever the charger cost to make", it's still a simple math:

I get [this and this and this] for my $699/$999/$1099/$399/$599/whatever...is it worth it? So you add the cost of a charger and cable if you need one. I don't need one, I already have one. Not specific to the replied-to post, but I don't understand all the complaints that "I don't have USB-C." If you have an iPhone currently, the same things that charge it can charge the new one, I understand. One would pay separately (but only optionally) to upgrade the experience.

I'm happy to make that trade-off for the environmental advancement.

It's a Lightning port in the iPhone 12, right? I'll just keep using the same cable and charger I have here plugged into the wall. Still fine after three years. I have a second pristine newer cable. And if I buy a MacBook, the new cable in the iPhone 12 box suits that.

For me is a simple "no charger?" = no buy!

I recycle my iPhones to my family ... i have no chargers left at home (maybe i can re-use my iPad charger, but i don't carry it with me always).

Also, any lightning cable that Apple sells dies a painful death after 2 years ....

no sell on this iPhone 12 for me ....

Apple be like:

The new iPhone 13, this year we have reduced carbon emissions by even more by shipping the iPhone without an iPhone!

But you don't need to use that cable. It's there if you want an incentive to (optionally) upgrade the portion of the experience to do with charging. I believe that out of the box, you can unplug your current iPhone, and plug your iPhone 12 into your existing cable.

I'm all for the environmental changes but the pricing doesn't reflect removing these devices so YES they are helping the environment BUT they are taking a bigger profit per device and some consumers may need to buy these devices now as they don't have earlier models to get the headphones or plugs so this is another purchase getting Apple even more money.

No, its still a lightening cable. It just has a USB-C at one end but guess what, you don't have to use it. Use the current 50 million USB ones you have.

Yup many people are basically getting a phone without anything else essentially as even the single included cable won't be useful to them without buying something else that they don't have (a different power adapter). While still basically paying the same type of prices they paid before when they got more.

And no, an increase in storage isn't there to balance out removal of something else, it's just how technology progresses. We don't get less and less simply because a faster CPU or more memory is there, it's not really how it works.

USB-C is still new because I still need a stupid dock to plug anything into my work laptop, and it's glitchy enough that I often have to replug things to make them work. I get that standards have to change, but they needed a transitional period as usual where the Macs had both ports instead of yoloing it (esp when iPhones STILL don't use USB-C for some reason).
