I know this is just giving them a pass, but I feel, so what? Does it really matter that Apple has big profit margins? They will sell you Device X for Price Y, and it's up to you to determine if it's worth it. The iPhone 5S sold for $649 off contract in 2012, which translates to $720 or so in 2020 dollars. Holy moley you get a lot more for roughly the same amount now. It's just amazing! I don't begrudge Apple their money, good for them! And I do have plenty of adapters and cables, I will accept some good for the environment that I am playing a teensy-tiny part in it for essentially no cost. I consider that a good, if only in the near term an emotional one.
It's like the concept of paying more taxes and getting less for it all.

USB-C is no longer new. There was no transition period and Apple did that because of the perpetual whining I read on these forums about USB-C being too new and needing a transition period which would never end because people are too f***ing cheap to buy $20 worth of the proper cables. Please sing that song to someone who will actually believe it.
The dock (from Caldigit) was like $135 because all the cheap dongles were even flakier, but idc, my employer paid for it. Just sucks for other people.

My personal MBP is the 2015 model for a reason. I'll buy a new one when USB-C is actually standard. I'm not cheap, but I'm not gonna pay for a downgrade and then whine about it. They have fixed the keyboard at least.

The benefits are for the environment, both in that Apple is making strides in reducing carbon waste, and might inspire others to do so as well. That's a benefit for everybody.

I get that Apple has a lot of money, they bring in so much revenue...but why is there this constant finger-pointing going on about whether they need to give back to the consumer? It's a simple math problem. I will get [this item] if I pay [this much money]. Beyond that what is the matter?
I agree about the revenue, but the environment thing is a lame excuse I've seen elsewhere to "justify" a price/value increase. People will instead order separate chargers that come in big Amazon boxes with plastic bubble wrap.

What really justifies the price/value increase is the market. People are willing to pay the same for less. Whatever.

If they really cared about the environment, they would make all their phones have replaceable batteries, & for their computers have upgradable ram and storage.

Recyling isn't enough, being about to Reuse and Renew devices is important. Because Recyling isn't free, it still costs money to transport and breakdown, separate components in that process. But if you can lengthen the life of devices before that time comes, then that helps the environment even more.

Tim & the Apple gang are a bunch of limousine liberals, won't live next to blacks, avoid taxes, obeys everything China says... they are the reason we don't have Bernie Sanders on the ticket

The phones have gotten bigger batteries over the years and Aple will be damned if their going to include the necessary USB-C charging brick in the box. Yeah, you c o u l d charge the new iPhones with an old 5 watt charger, but I bet you'll grow weary of waiting pretty quickly.

Guess what? Still gotta buy ANOTHER charger to charge this phone at a modern rate
I intentionally slow-charge my phones with a weak USB hub to preserve the battery health :)

Makes sense...i guess if you trade it in then you could keep the cord and brick...
i already have a usb-c brick from my iPad, but you know what? it's back behind my nightstand plugged in. So if i wanna use it to charge my new phone, i have to unplug it each time. this makes zero sense. At least put usb-c in the new iphone since you're acting as if everyone already has usb-c anyways.

I think that most people will not order separate chargers that come in big Amazon boxes; most people will go on using the chargers they already have.

That doesn't necessarily follow. Over the years and over the various iPhones and iPads I've purchased, I've got a handful of adapters plugged in around the house, and several more just sitting in a drawer. It's fair to say that if I were to buy a new iPhone and not getting a charger, then I'm paying the same for the same. Since the last couple of purchases I wasn't even using the adapter anyway.

They are not acting that way. They do not expect you to necessarily use the USB-C cable. They expect most people to just plug the new phone into the same cord that they were using for the old phone. Giving you the USB-C cable is in case you do have a more powerful USB-C charger you can use, then you have a cable.

I hope carriers have promos where you get a free usb-c charger and earphones when purchasing the new iphone

Those are USB-A bricks, not USB-C, so you have to either reuse an old Lightning to USB-A one and charge at the lower speed or get a new brick. You used to pay for the phone, brick, and headphones, now you just get the phone, for the same price.

I easily agree with removing the headphones since most people already have those and have no use for more. But still, if they do that without decreasing the price, that's the same $ for less.

You don't need the new charger unless you are intending to use the cable that came in the box. If you're coming over from Android you will need one, probably. But if you already have an iPhone newer than the iPhone 4S, then your existing charging setup will charge the new ones fine. That's the whole point behind doing this in the name of environmental conservation: you don't need a new brick because there are a million bricks and cables out there that work fine with these new phones.

The cables fray so easily that you almost need a new one by the time you get a new phone. A significant number of people will buy this phone and have no way to charge it. Also, the old ones charge at a lower rate, but not a big deal.

Yep, and I determine it not worth. I use a 6S still. Though some may actually want Apple not to make profit for international reasons I won't get into.

Well, YMMV. I've had two frayed lightning cables since making the switch to lightning in 2012. Right now I've got four lightning cables plugged in around the house, two more in my car and at least one more in my partner's car. None of them are frayed, and only one (the one that came with my iPhone SE 2020) is particularly new.

If they want to do that then that’s ok.. but as I seen someone say somewhere else, why not give an option on the site for it? If someone needs a charger and cable, then throw it in with the package for free with the phone so the person doesn’t need to order another package (requiring another delivery which isn’t that good for the environment). That way they will only ship the charger and cable when someone needs it.

This way Apple can still be environmentally friendly, surely they won’t mind if this is only for environment friendly reasons and totally not about the cost.

L0vetodream got this wrong, he said it would be very artistic!

He hasn’t had any insider knowledge for this event at all!

He even got the orange colour iPhone wrong 🤣
From a videography perspective I found it very artsy. Orange color was probably the coral being mis-spoken.

Domestic version of Xperia/Galaxy with career bundling (KDDI/Softbank/DoCoMo) aren't ships with charger for years, so I am not too shocked with this announcement, but I think Apple should stop saying for environmental hypocrisy BS. It all about margin, just like local manufacturers here.

As you guys see, those box are pretty slim. Apple still include charging/data cable at least, those aren't. Only device itself, some literature and 1-Seg cable.

I’m glad to see Apple is going in the right direction with the environment. This will not only save millions of wasted adapters and headphones but will save environmental cost of transportation
