The 0P mention 12 pro at the beginning of the thread. So I believe both of them have been complained about. I am happy with my pro no matter about the close-up limitations.
There was initially a problem with the lens handoff algorithm causing “autofocus hunting” issues. This was fixed in 14.2.oh... ok... but the 3" problem is with the Max only (requires at least 4,5"). There is no problem with the non-Max versions, or is there? Sorry, I might be unaware...
Normally I could fill the frame but with the pro max this is as close as I can get. Oh well.
Nice watch. I just cropped the pic I took with the main lens on the Max. Its not bad but you do loose some resolution.View attachment 1679679
Taken on my 12PM. I was able to get a little closer I think. To do close ups use the 2.5x lens but must have good lighting otherwise it’ll use the wide lens and crop.
So it seems 12PM owners are able to use the 2.5X Tele for closeups after all? That’s definitely not the case with the Tele on my 12 Pro, no matter how good the light is. It always switches to the Wide lens for 2X macro shots.View attachment 1679679

I tried using the 2,5x tele for macro shots... it doesn't look anywhere as good as the photos taken on the wide lens (much less detail and also noisier). Maybe the phone was just cropping the wide to make it look like the tele? I'll have to test that again to make sure.
Yup once you start to crop, all bets are off. Nice panda. I’ve been waiting for mine for 3 years now. Been told I should finally get it in the new year LOLNice watch. I just cropped the pic I took with the main lens on the Max. Its not bad but you do loose some resolution.
Should be able to. I’ll test it out again later. I know with my old 11PM it could be done.So it seems 12PM owners are able to use the 2.5X Tele for closeups after all? Great hope you get it soon. It’s a great watch. All time fav and only one now. I guess I’ll live with the shortcomings of the new lens. Not a deal breaker as the phone is great otherwise.Yup once you start to crop, all bets are off. Nice panda. I’ve been waiting for mine for 3 years now. I've been following this thread on and off. I am thinking about getting the regular 12. I wouldn't need the Pro and the Pro Max is far too big for my liking. Am I correct in thinking these current focus issues are only with the Pro and Pro Max models due to the LiDAR scanner?

Yikes! I finally got around to it. You are absolutely correctYep, it was just the wide cropping... I don't think I'm able to use the 12PM tele to shoot anything that is closer to the lens...
No wonder quality was much worse when I used the tele-cropped-wide-after-all![]()
To summarize, The 12 and Mini will perform identically to the 12 Pro for close focusing (minimum focus distance of about 3”.) What kind of results do you get when you back away a bit and switch to 2X or 2.5X zoom?Quick point and shoot very close up the focusing struggles. Normal objects are fine but very up close it’s an issue
12 pro max here
For example

It’s further than 4.5” though, it’s closer to 6” so a 50% loss.To summarize, The 12 and Mini will perform identically to the 12 Pro for close focusing (minimum focus distance of about 3”.) The Pro Max is apparently still buggy for a few people, but many people are disappointed that they can’t get closer than 4.5” away from their subject even with their “properly functioning” phones—due to the new Wide lens + sensor configuration. It remains to be seen whether Apple can actually do anything to address this, as it will require playing fast and loose with the laws of physics. 🤷♂️

I’m a bit surprised that none of the main YouTube reviewers have noticed this, including the photographers.
If you read the entire thread you would have read on some having issues with the pro as well as the maxAre there any Pro issues with close range focusing? As I understand it, only the Pro Max has issues, and it seems to be entirely caused by the physics of the specific 12PM sensor/lens size combination.
