The 0P mention 12 pro at the beginning of the thread. So I believe both of them have been complained about. I am happy with my pro no matter about the close-up limitations.

oh... ok... but the 3" problem is with the Max only (requires at least 4,5"). There is no problem with the non-Max versions, or is there? Sorry, I might be unaware...
There was initially a problem with the lens handoff algorithm causing “autofocus hunting” issues. This was fixed in 14.2.

Then I made a stink of the fact that the 12 Pro couldn’t focus any closer than 3” from a subject, not realizing that this has been the case for the last several iPhones.

So for all intents and purposes, everything is now working “as it should”, for better or worse... ;)

Normally I could fill the frame but with the pro max this is as close as I can get. Oh well.

Taken on my 12PM. I was able to get a little closer I think. To do close ups use the 2.5x lens but must have good lighting otherwise it’ll use the wide lens and crop.

Nice watch. I just cropped the pic I took with the main lens on the Max. Its not bad but you do loose some resolution.

So it seems 12PM owners are able to use the 2.5X Tele for closeups after all? That’s definitely not the case with the Tele on my 12 Pro, no matter how good the light is. It always switches to the Wide lens for 2X macro shots.

I tried using the 2,5x tele for macro shots... it doesn't look anywhere as good as the photos taken on the wide lens (much less detail and also noisier). Maybe the phone was just cropping the wide to make it look like the tele? I'll have to test that again to make sure.

Yep, it was just the wide cropping... I don't think I'm able to use the 12PM tele to shoot anything that is closer to the lens...

No wonder quality was much worse when I used the tele-cropped-wide-after-all :(

Yup once you start to crop, all bets are off. Nice panda. I’ve been waiting for mine for 3 years now. Been told I should finally get it in the new year LOL

Should be able to. I’ll test it out again later. I know with my old 11PM it could be done.

Great hope you get it soon. It’s a great watch. All time fav and only one now. I guess I’ll live with the shortcomings of the new lens. Not a deal breaker as the phone is great otherwise.

It seems people are having varying degrees of focus distance here. My 12 Pro Max will not focus closer than 6”. It’s really bad. I can only assume then that mine is faulty.

I've been following this thread on and off. I am thinking about getting the regular 12. I wouldn't need the Pro and the Pro Max is far too big for my liking. Am I correct in thinking these current focus issues are only with the Pro and Pro Max models due to the LiDAR scanner?

Are there any Pro issues with close range focusing? As I understand it, only the Pro Max has issues, and it seems to be entirely caused by the physics of the specific 12PM sensor/lens size combination.

Ok, I've just been through on the phone support to Apple, and they managed to locate a master ticket for iPhone 12 Pro Max close focusing issues. They are linking other support tickets to for this problem.

She advised that Apple are aware and actively working on a fix. Fingers crossed this comes out as a OS patch soon!

Yikes! I finally got around to it. You are absolutely correct :(

There is no way to get a macro shot with the telephoto lens as it will switch to the wide lens and crop.

Quick point and shoot very close up the focusing struggles. Normal objects are fine but very up close it’s an issue

12 pro max here

To summarize, The 12 and Mini will perform identically to the 12 Pro for close focusing (minimum focus distance of about 3”.) The initial autofocusing weirdness on the 12 Pro, which some were attributing to LiDAR, has been fixed in iOS 14.2.

The Pro Max is apparently still buggy for a few people, but many people are disappointed that they can’t get closer than 4.5” away from their subject even with their “properly functioning” phones—due to the new Wide lens + sensor configuration. It remains to be seen whether Apple can actually do anything to address this, as it will require playing fast and loose with the laws of physics. 🤷‍♂️

It’s further than 4.5” though, it’s closer to 6” so a 50% loss.
I’m a bit surprised that none of the main YouTube reviewers have noticed this, including the photographers.

Thank you for the explanation.

I think most users can see a pretty good image at 4,5" but it's really not completely 100% locked in focus, you're probably right that it is closer to 6" to achieve really good focus.

If you read the entire thread you would have read on some having issues with the pro as well as the max
