I only want two things from the new iPhones this year:
1. 120 Hz refresh
2. Touch ID

I don’t understand why they don’t put 120hz refresh in this year. A lot of other manufacturers have it figured out, why can’t Apple?

5G is not yet a feature that will cause me to upgrade.

Face ID sucks. I wish they would integrate both into the phone and give us options. What they did with the new iPad and integrated it to the power button is smart! I would love Touch ID back.

Hard disagree from me. FaceID is awesome! Being able to unlock my iPad with wet hands is a must for me considering I use my iPad in the kitchen all the time. Plus, with the speed of Face ID, authentication throughout the OS is almost instantaneous. I’d hate to have to put my finger on the power button just to auto fill passwords.

If this is true, Apple has truly lost their vision and seriously isn't innovating anymore.

If the iPhone 13 has the same design, then the iPhone design will basically not have changed since X, which means 4 years of the same old design for flagship products (iPhone 6-8 had same design, but iPhone 8 was not a flagship). WTF. Why can't Apple go back to 2-year design cycles?!?!?!?

And if a 2022 new iPhone has Touch ID, that will mean that Apple is using the same biometric tech for 9 YEARS. 9 YEARS. I'm sure if Steve Jobs was still here, Touch ID would have been vintage and the entire lineup would have long moved on to Face ID. For Face ID critics and naysayers, Steve Jobs would have fixed all the current Face ID flaws (like doesn't work flat on tables, doesn't work with masks etc) and made it leaps better.

Apple is just stagnating so badly now. But the sad truth is that Steve Jobs made Apple so far ahead that there's simply no competition and no alternatives now.

They could do whatever they put their mind on at that point, with more resources, talent and money than ever. They could have R&D labs that redefine mobile tech and user experience. Heck, if they could provide a Retina display in 2010, they can provide a notchless 120Hz display in 2020. They would have already rolled out Face ID 2 with 11 Pro at least. They would have fixed critical design flaws in their lineup like that Magic Mouse 2 charging port and the Pencil 1, instead of retaining them forever. They would have applied and built on innovations like Magsafe and 3D Touch instead of letting them die on the vine. USB-c would be the standard across devices. They just won't. They know their stuff will sell anyway with whatever minimum effort they put. They wouldn't be a 2 trillion company weren't it for courageous nickel and diming

Anything solid that the next phone released will be given the 12 moniker, or will it follow the X, with release of the XS, thus looking at the 11RS, 11S, and 11SPro this cycle?
All the rumors are pointing to a new design with squared off edges, so that's pretty much a guaranteed number bump (S cycle are typically internal upgrades to existing designs). The 2021 iPhones could easily be the 12s based on these early rumors though.

Touch ID is available on the iPhone SE model, and if this and other rumors hold, an SE2 model with Touch ID will remain available for years to come. So if you want Touch ID, you should purchase one of those.

I think what you meant to say is "I don't like Face ID and I wish they'd put Touch ID in some manifestation or another across their entire phone lineup". Not liking Face ID is your prerogative (as is mine in that I think it is great), but Apple is highly unlikely to have more than 1 non-Face ID phone ever again. They have moved on and consider Touch ID to be a commodity, lower end option. Not a bad option, just not part of the premium offering. Much the same way they (and other companies) move on to other technologies and feature sets.

Jeez! The iPhone 12 must be really, really bad if we’re speculating about the next gen + 1
You must be new to to the Apple rumors world....this is how it's been for years. The design/build cycle for these things is more than 12 months ahead, so yeah, they're working on next years product line up before this years is available. No indication of 'bad' or 'good'...just tidbits leaking from the supply chain.

I’m fairly new to posting on the forum but not new to Apple equipment. You are right that it has always been like this to a certain extent. What makes a bit of a difference this time is that there are some things, e.g. 120 refresh, that competitors have got already so you’d expect at least that Apple would have it with the 12 iteration. Also, the bizarre situation that the iPad Pro’s have already got it. Now I know it’s tied to the screen type, but that doesn’t excuse not having it.

If anything, I wish the iPhone 12 would already combine FaceID AND TouchID on the side button, especially in the times of COVID-19 it could be pushed as almost a sales argument offering more convenience.

Also I personally would not mind an "LTE-only" version if it means saving like 100 bucks. I do not have need for 5G whatsoever. The only use case for me would be streaming but thanks to insane data caps on mobile data here, I wouldn't dare to stream without wifi anyway.
Combing Face and Touch Id seems like a no brainer in the world today, but remember that the bulk of the iPhone 12 features were laid down about 18 months ago, long before any of us had heard of COVID. The design and build cycle is so far in advance they literally are 'skating to where the puck is going to be'. As for LTE only...don't think it would save 100 bucks since the chip/antenna sets are all being updated for 5G and it's not in the carrier's visions to maintain LTE, they're building out 5G and beyond as fast as possible. So you've got 2 major factors going against it and I'm betting that Apple (and other manufacturers) are betting that there isn't a lot of LTE-only customers out there.

I love touchID and the new Air gives me hope that it will stay. SE3 is looking like yet another amazing iPhone.
I hate faceID (and the notch) so this is awesome news.
And I think the COVID showed us how faceID is ****, compared to touchID, right?

So no, lets keep the faceID on expensive models and keep the much superior touchID on SE. Better phone and cheaper - win win :)

What makes the fingerprint sensor still attractive for the SE3 and not standardize it with the face ID?

The conspiracy theorist in me wants to believe that ProMotion was never intended for the iPhone 12. Instead, Apple released enough leaks to tease us and therefore get us to anticipate this feature. But in reality, all along it has been planned as the must-have feature for the “12S” (aka: iPhone 13) next year.

The reviews are going to be pretty brutal if the 12 doesn't have 120Hz. MKBHD said a few weeks back he considered it unacceptable for a flagship phone to not have 120Hz in 2020.
Personally I don't care about 120 Hz very much at all in a phone. I have 120 Hz in my iPad Pro, and it's low on the list of things I look for.

I get what you’re saying, the changes are now much more iterative, but isn't this just a sign of the category maturing? All of the key features are now refined so much that big changes don’t happen that much. Feels a bit like what happened to Laptops 10 years ago in fact the current MacBook Pro line up doesn’t look too different to my Mid 2012 retina MacBook Pro, which in fairness was just an evolution of an even older design.

the issue is the quantity of screens that need to be available for Apple - the other vendors are doing relatively small batches. Also Samsung its the only vendor able to deliver the quality and quantity Apple wants and this year they are keeping all LTPO panels for themselves.

now to your point, if you keep your phone longer than 2 years, then the logical thing to do its to wait until all features are included (.i.e.,120hz, 2nd gen 5g modems which are going to be much better, maybe a fix/enhancement for the antenna since Apple is reportedly using theirs, etc.)

I'm certain that they have plans for notch-less screens with Face ID, they have to wait for the screen manufacturing plants to be able to produce a zillion of them for the right price, and that's not there yet. As for the charging of the mouse and the Pencil 1 being "critical design flaws"...I think you have different definitions of "critical". I know many, many people who use their Apple mouse and Pencil 1 without an issue, not sure what's flawed, unless you would rather the charging port be in a different location. OK, fair point but hardly "critical". Where Apple (I suspect) is working on innovation is not moving the charging port but rather rethinking charging of the mouse altogether....maybe a mouse pad that is also a charging pad. The way the Pencil 2 charges by being attached to the iPad magnetically. That's the innovation that you need to focus on. Sometimes that takes time to get off of the drawing board and out into the world. But moving the Lightning port on the mouse is hardly critical.
