They could do whatever they put their mind on at that point, with more resources, talent and money than ever. They could have R&D labs that redefine mobile tech and user experience. Heck, if they could make a Retina display in 2010, they can make a notchless 120Hz display in 2020. They would have already rolled out Face ID 2 with 11 Pro at least. They would have fixed critical design flaws in their lineup like that Magic Mouse 2 charging port and the Pencil 1, instead of retaining them forever. They would have applied and built on innovations like Magsafe and 3D Touch instead of letting them die on the vine. USB-c would be the standard across devices. They just won't. They know their stuff will sell anyway with whatever minimum effort they put. They wouldn't be a 2 trillion company weren't it for courageous nickel and diming
Plus
A They need to spread things our so there is a reason to buy each year
B If they did all that at once, they would alienate a great majority of customers with a $10k iPhone

I was under the impression the new iPad Air's power button was larger, to accomodate the Touch ID sensor. Would this even fit on an iPhone?

If it does, I'd rather Apple just moved back to Touch ID, and dropped Face ID altogether. Touch ID has always been more reliable for me, and that was before Covid mask wearing. Plus, it would let them get rid of the notch.
iPhone SE has Touch ID exclusively and if rumors are true, there is an SE replacement planned for 2022 that seems like it will be Touch ID only as well. Why don't you just purchase one of these?

Lazy designers. They even dusted off iphone5s case design so it can be used in ip12. If Apple didn't have a following this large, they would be innovating. Since they know people will buy anything from them, you get this. Lucky for consumers we have choice.. don't buy it or just need to look beyond the fruit.

Do you think they could activate via software update the 120hz iPhone 12’s panel?

You must be new to to the Apple rumors world....this is how it's been for years. The design/build cycle for these things is more than 12 months ahead, so yeah, they're working on next years product line up before this years is available. No indication of 'bad' or 'good'...just tidbits leaking from the supply chain.
really its so far ahead than Kuo predicted the iPhone X 18 months before anybody knew about it

120Hz not coming to the iPhone 12 this year is not due to Apple being "unable to innovate". It is not coming because the current suppliers of such displays can meet the lower volume everyone else combined needs, but cannot meet the tens of millions that Apple would need.

If this is true, Apple has truly lost their vision and seriously isn't innovating anymore.

If the iPhone 13 has the same design, then the iPhone design will basically not have changed since X, which means 4 years of the same old design for flagship products (iPhone 6-8 had same design, but iPhone 8 was not a flagship). WTF. Why can't Apple go back to 2-year design cycles?!?!?!?

And if a 2022 new iPhone has Touch ID, that will mean that Apple is using the same biometric tech for 9 YEARS. 9 YEARS. I'm sure if Steve Jobs was still here, Touch ID would have been vintage and the entire lineup would have long moved on to Face ID. For Face ID critics and naysayers, Steve Jobs would have fixed all the current Face ID flaws (like doesn't work flat on tables, doesn't work with masks etc) and made it leaps better.

Apple is just stagnating so badly now. But the sad truth is that Steve Jobs made Apple so far ahead that there's simply no competition and no alternatives now.
I agree 100%!! Android flagships are seriously pushing the technology envelope, take the xiaomi mi 10 ultra ($865) as an example; this phone is a beast!!!
I'm sorry to say but I am slowly waking up from my long-cast Apple spell and all of the sudden the mobile technology world seems full of possibilities...

Differentiation. FaceID is essentially contactless so (ideally) faster and less intrusive solution to biometric authentication. In practice, I still find TouchID to be superior in certain situations.

FaceID is a biometric authentication. :)

I could write whatever but the reality is: I’ll probably buy it.

BTW: I hope they get rid of the notch, bring Touch ID back and add periscope zoom.

There were rumors that won’t happen until 2023, if true, Apple is nuts, but I believe it, it seems they only care about innovating when it comes to the iPad these days.

It may be larger than the old power button, but the new Air is still only 6.1 mm thick, which is thinner than any iPhone currently being produced (with the thinnest being the SE at 7.3 mm) so it wouldn't be a stretch to include it on future iPhones.

I only want two things from the new iPhones this year:
1. 120 Hz refresh
2. Touch ID

I don’t understand why they don’t put 120hz refresh in this year. A lot of other manufacturers have it figured out, why can’t Apple?
Because Apple does not want to ship 120Hz, they want to ship ProMotion. This variable refresh rate is not possible without LTPO panels.

There’s currently only one company that manufactures these panels for phones: Samsung Display (LG display only has a watch display line dedicated to making the Apple Watch displays). Samsung can’t manufacture enough of these panels this year for a product as big as the iPhone and these panels have to come from somewhere. People seem to think that Apple can just snap their fingers and that the panels magically appear.

Also, Apple “can figure this out” for sure because they literally invented LTPO technology for this purpose. For every Galaxy Note 20 Ultra+ Max or whatever Samsung sells with LTPO display technology they literally have to pay royalties to Apple for.

If these rumors are true, we’ll have reached a point where we have iPhone models spanning 5 release years that cannot be differentiated except for small camera and performance improvements.

I think one of the biggest “issues” is that iOS is designed so well that the iPhone experience is no longer improved by new models.

Although this would never happen, Apple and Samsung and others could easily justify an every-other-year release schedule for their phones. There is simply not enough that can be done to drastically improve hardware year after year.

This is typical Apple rumors reaction. Some competitors have a bunch of features with obvious tradeoffs, which partially explains why their products don’t succeed as Apple’s.

Instead of thinking in the obvious reasons why they don’t implement them, some people firmly believe that it’s because they have “lazy designers” or they purposely make the bare minimum product.

Reading some of those comments you can understand how almost every competitor is so unfocused.
