I agree 100%!! Android flagships are seriously pushing the technology envelope, take the xiaomi mi 10 ultra ($865) as an example; this phone is a beast!!!
I'm sorry to say but I am slowly waking up from my long-cast Apple spell and all of the sudden the mobile technology world seems full of possibilities...
This phone is garbage. Runs Android 10 and it's missing T-mobile bands 66, 71

This is suggesting you might as well skip the 12 because its going to be a turd of a phone with no real upgrades anywhere. No idea why Apple is even releasing a phone this year.
Why wouldn’t they? It’s great that you don’t need a new iPhone this year, but that not especially relevant to the 200 million customers who do. They’re the ones Apple will sell to this year.

Some will buy one of the new models, some will buy an SE, some will buy an older model to save some bucks.

My 6s needs replacing, while some people buy every year. Some customers are on a two, three or four year cycle 🤷‍♂️

Then you’ve got people dumping Android, those who lose theirs or break it beyond repair, kids getting their first phone and of course businesses buy a fair chunk.

If everyone wanted what you want—what is it, 120 Hz? Smaller notch? No notch? USB-C? 1TB storage?—then Apple would sell zero phones this year. But they don’t.

If none of Apple’s phones interests you this year, you can wait, or buy an Android that you want instead. But that doesn’t really impact Apple’s yearly release cycle.

From the article...

Hmm. Given that we're discussing rumours about the phone to be released around about October 2021 I'll be a bit disappointed if at least the Pro models don't have micro-LED screens which, if other rumours are true, will have already debuted on the 12.9" iPad in early 2021. As I understand it the "LTPO display technology" mentioned is not micro-LED and that the micro-LED technology Apple is rumoured to be adopting for the 12.9" iPad next year offers thinner display panels and even lower power consumption than an equivalent OLED screen.

I don't actually want my iPhone any thinner, it's the battery life that I care about, but a thinner display means more space left over for a fatter battery without needing to increase case thickness so as long as Apple don't go on another chase to get the iPhone as thin as possible then adopting micro-LED screen technology could deliver a nice double boost to battery life by reducing power consumption and allowing a bigger battery.

It's not likely that they will release MicroLED that early if ever. Reason cost and marginal benefit. The single biggest advantage that it brings to the table is longevity which does not matter for a phones. TVs sure, also going to be way cheaper to produce compare to tv with orders of magnitudes of lower pixel density and thus costs.

Jobs was far from perfect. He released an iPhone with a flawed antenna then tried to tell everyone that they were holding it wrong!

may the time under the IBM Snr Engineer, it was leading innovation for antennae design n use. For most users nobody realized any issues for a few months after release - close to 6mths! I’d wager it was a software update that cause the issue. Wasn’t so bad either the 4S too.

this is what happens when you launch bleeding edge technology and hence most likely why Apple returned to their roots with slowly releasing innovations in their products until they’re Nearing cost effectiveness and early maturity.

No reason to buy the iPhone 12 Mini now! I will wait till the improve iPhone 13 Mini in 2021!

I’m sorry but what even is this? The 12 isn’t even out yet.
I wish I could get paid to throw ideas and educated guesses out there. Maybe someday and I’ll call myself an analyst.

I've been following MacRumors for three years. I'm fine with and will read news on any future models and technologies and my next phone will be the 12 mini. That's what the site is about. It's the nature of consumer electronics.

Because Apple does not want to ship 120Hz, they want to ship ProMotion. This variable refresh rate is not possible without LTPO panels.

While I would appreciate LTPO, if I can’t have it now I would rather have plain 120 Hz.

5G SE 3 in 2022 Spring is believable. Apple might drop front TouchID and move it to power button(like iPad Air 4) to increase the screen size and keep lower price tag to offer as poor man's 5G iPhone.

It's one of three things:
1. There is not much more they can do with the iPhone (probably not true if you look at competitors, although improvements are slowing)
2. They'll do the minimum to maximize profits
3. They're not spending much time and money on their cash cow

It might be a combination of all three. I think of mobile phones as cars. Not much changes year to year, or even 5 years to 5 years. Sure improvements are made, but the idea of needing to get the new iPhone each year is long gone.

Pretty much this. I dont think people actually understands how technology is developed and works.

The iPhone 12 Pro will have a SoC as fast as your Dual Core MBP in 2015, a Display that has better colour accuracy and contrast ratio than 95% of computing devices on planet earth, Wireless Technology that is on the leading edge of research and development. A Camera that beats nearly all non DSLR camera 10 years ago in your pocket....etc...

The iPhone went from taking all the best technology in other computing / digital equipment and fit into a pocket devices, to now itself being the best technology and leading edge. All in the space of 10 years.

Apart from Touch ID, Bigger Battery, Pro Motion Display, and possibly even better Camera. I dont even know what to look forward to from an iPhone. And you may now understand why Apple is pushing the Services Revenue.

I guess I am passed my vanity phase of wanting a new iPhone every year - I am on the 3 year train now and have no regrets. My iPhone 11 Max its going to be beast for a long time.

same here. Last I upgraded was my X then swapped quickly to the 8 I’m using. 2 repairs. The 12 Mini or whatever it’s called will be my next iPhone.

If this is true, Apple has truly lost their vision and seriously isn't innovating anymore.

If the iPhone 13 has the same design, then the iPhone design will basically not have changed since X, which means 4 years of the same old design for flagship products (iPhone 6-8 had same design, but iPhone 8 was not a flagship). WTF. Why can't Apple go back to 2-year design cycles?!?!?!?

And if a 2022 new iPhone has Touch ID, that will mean that Apple is using the same biometric tech for 9 YEARS. 9 YEARS. I'm sure if Steve Jobs was still here, Touch ID would have been vintage and the entire lineup would have long moved on to Face ID. For Face ID critics and naysayers, Steve Jobs would have fixed all the current Face ID flaws (like doesn't work flat on tables, doesn't work with masks etc) and made it leaps better.

Apple is just stagnating so badly now. But the sad truth is that Steve Jobs made Apple so far ahead that there's simply no competition and no alternatives now.

well it’s gotten so bad that Microsoft’s Surface Go laptop pretty much looks like a modern iBook (white) from 14yrs ago! And that price is significantly cheaper and appealing for what it offers.

sad to say that Apple executives need a fresh hungry blood replacement and FAST if this is going to continue. Srouji can stay - he’s the chip fan equivalent of early 20yrs Jony Ive. And continues to show his mettle and earns his pay and accolades fully!!

Joswiak - barely done crap all for so long. Go!
Cue - he’s earned his staple and works his ass off with more responsibilities in so many areas more than anyone EVER has at Apple in its history. He seems worn down and not so interested as much. He’s loyal and has a moral compass as seen with internal email of the iBook store debacle before it became an issue - pricing and exclusivity. He was on point yet idea was voted no. he can stay yet maybe groom a hungry yet sound replacement.
Riccio - man what’s he doing? He must be doing something as you always see him in front rows of the last 8 wwdc’s (except of course 2020). Others are rising up through the ranks: notably he didn’t introduce the 2016 MBP, iPAd Pro models (except the initial 12.9”) and no Mac Pro either. So what’s he doing at Apple?!

that’s just a few. Prior to jobs leaving for years you’d see ALL top executives involved in product announcements and initial release info.

The same rumor mill continues.
“*insert feature* will be available at next launch.”

MacRumors reporting for 12 months how it will definitely happen because *insert leaker* said so.

Month of release “actually, *insert feature* will be available next year instead.”
Rinse repeat😁

Name one valid reason to get the iPhone 12 over the iPhone 11? You can't because its a terrible update, worse than an S upgrade. Anyone who needs a new iPhone is much better off getting an 11 and paying half the price of what the 12 will cost.

dunno 'bout you, but I'm more interested in iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 specifically. Any rumours on that?

Time to put both an underscreen Touch ID and Face ID on the iPhone Hopefully by September 2021 we won’t need masks but it may be a way of life going forward
It’s also useful when your phone is laying on the desk so you don’t have to pick it up.
Tim an underscreen Touch ID would be great. Enough said

120Hz not coming to the iPhone 12 this year is not due to Apple being "unable to innovate". It is not coming because the current suppliers of such displays can meet the lower volume everyone else combined needs, but cannot meet the tens of millions that Apple would need.
not true , they have enough panels they just couldn't get the displays to be good enough without ltpo

iPhone 12 only needs 5G to sell like gangbusters

probably true, even if the majority of people will see not real benefit—this is exactly the reason people who buy iPhones get called “sheep” though. One feature out of 10 other phones get, lower base storage, etc but they’ll fly off the shelves. Personally I think the small phone is going to be the REAL story though, I know I want one.

Obviously it's all speculation but it seems likely this would be the line up. I've been waiting a long time for a high refresh rate iPhone, I'm sure Apple will make it great as some of the high refresh rate Android devices seem half baked or compromised in some respect, like trading resolution for refresh rate or just killing the battery life.

A VRR + HFR would be the perfect combination, throttle it down when not in use then immediately go to 120Hz.

I wonder how long it will be until we see Apple integrating their own modems into these devices. I'm tempted to hang onto my 6S for another year until these things arrive, it's been one hell of a device and is still going strong to this day.

I still wish Apple would move to an under the screen TouchID sensor, I'm still not sold on FaceID especially with all the mask wearing. Can't wait until we have nothing but screen on the front.

You do realize that the 11 Pro Max has a MUCH lower ppi than the S/Notes, right? They’re in the mid 500 per inch. The highest iPhone is roughly 100 ppi lower, so the resolution is already significantly lower. Also unless Apple does some MAJOR innovation that 120Hz is going to pull a lot of power regardless. The biggest innovation for battery life in the 11 series? A larger battery.

aw cmon can we at least wait until iPhone 12 is out?

anyway i'm definitely gonna get the 12 Pro Max. desperately need a new phone and I'm done with Android offerings. My last iPhone was the 4S which i had between 2011-2013.

This isn’t Samsung. You are not going to find last year’s iPhone at ½ the price of this year’s model.

SE3 will probably be very close to the XR. No way it's gonna have a large top and bottom bezel with a 6.1" display.
