In Apples “ideal world“, face masks would be forever mandatory. Sod that. Besides, it wouldn’t be Face ID if half of the face is muzzled up.

Yeah Apple, maker the most popular selfie-camera in the world, must be thrilled at the idea of a masked world.
Or maybe they’re just providing means to deal with the situation.

Facial recognition with masks required a new hardware component? I doubt it. Typical Apple to offer a feature that should have existed a year ago to the people that run out and buy their newest $1200 phone. Another sign they have no new ideas. The idea barrel is bone dry, and the bottom has already been scraped. They are now just offering pieces of the barrel.

iPhone 13 is in FULL production, if they are TESTING this right now, next year it might come… Prosser, what are you talking about?
It’s possible that the hardware was feature complete and the testing was t fine tune detection algorithms. That said it’s Prosser, so take with a massive grain of salt

I’m pretty happy about this feature coming to the iPhone 13 series!! Because my main complain about Face ID was the use indoors with a face mask on my face. After year and a half of pandemic, I’m starting to think that masks are here to stay (at least on closed spaces), and using a regular Face ID device could really be a problem.

With this new system, I don’t need Touch ID. However, it raises questions about how can it work, because facemasks hide a good chunk of our face...

I have a dry skin and would constantly struggle with TouchID.
Also, there’s the issue of gloves, wet hands, dirty hands, etc.

If we’re talking about keeping both, sure.
But FaceID is leaps better, if only for the fact that there are less daily life scenarios where it’s completely unusable (well, at least before covid).
Fair point. As acclimated as I am now to gestures and FaceID, I still miss the Home Button and feel it is intrinsically easier than memorizing gestures.

I just upgraded this year (from my 5-6 year old iPhone 6S) and boy howdy was going losing the Home Button an annoyance. I do really like the increased real estate though on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. The screen is bigger than my entire last phone! 😅

THAT would be a decent reason to upgrade for me.
if only it could recognize me from my car dashboard without having me to move close to the sensor…
I can legit unlock my iPhone 12 Pro Max using Face ID several feet away. 1.5-2 feet easy. I was kind of astounded, actually.

Just bring Touch ID back dummies! GEEZ! This type of Face ID will remove all the security of the kind that actually worked when you didn't need a mask! It's like doubling down on DUMB! UGH!

I also think there's something else Apple isn't revealing, likely patent issues with using Touch ID under the screen that they don't want to pay for.

I'm lost. So users would have to pay extra to buy an accessory to bypass FaceID's inability to work properly?

you are. the case is a way for apple to test a new version of the face ID system will OLD phones. it is not something they will ever sell. it's a way of getting a lot of apple employees to test the new system without giving them the new iphone 13 which would then inevitably leak. this is a case with the new face ID system THAT WILL BE BUILT INTO the new iphones, and is not a case they will ever sell.

I'd like to know how will Apple make Face ID work better for people wearing masks and with fogged glasses. Will they require a rescan of the face wearing a mask? 🤔

My eyes are quite foggy every Friday evening. Guess that will keep me from posting drunk stuff on social media which is a good thing.

Situation? A specie that have the ability to split the atom , at the same time stupid enough to think it can stop a virus with a peace of cloth? Honestly , we are on of the kind.

Stop that Money wasting **** and give the customer TouchID back! They want it and they need it 😄

sorry but not all customers of iPhones want TouchID ~ either alone or maybe many want a combo not a combo working either or.

FaceID with software is more secure for intrusions, outside of a hacking box, as it requires visual attention if enabled in iOS. Which means even if you’re in deep sleep your eyes will not both centre when your lids are lifted and shady person tries to unlock your phone. Sure should be around shady ppl but there are situations you may not know or out of your control. TouchID is fast but even if dead or finger cut off your phone is easily unlock-able.

did you even read the full article at all??!

The tests were apparently conducted recently, so Prosser suggested that if the improved Face ID is not immediately available with the iPhone 13, it could be introduced with a later software update.

although he also stated this new hardware may not make it to the iPhone 13, we could summarize since this testing was NOT recent & same size as a smaller notch it could very well be completed (testing & hardware) to make it in production of the iPhone 13 series. We’ll see.
