Situation? A specie that have the ability to split the atom , at the same time stupid enough to think it can stop a virus with a peace of cloth? Honestly , we are on of the kind.

We’re 1.5 years into an airborne pandemic and you understood so little about how this all works? Sad. Anyway masks are a thing whether Apple wants it or not, that’s why they have to work around them, they have no choice.

Apple is currently testing new Face ID hardware that could allow users to unlock their iPhone while wearing a mask or foggy glasses, according to leaker Jon Prosser.

Via his website FrontPageTech.com, Prosser explained that Apple is testing more advanced Face ID hardware using a case that fits snugly around an iPhone 12. The case allows the iPhone to bypass its built-in Face ID system to use that of the case instead.

Prosser believes that the prototype Face ID array matches the exact layout depicted in CAD files of the iPhone 13 from earlier this year. This is because the prototype Face ID hardware in the case is considerably narrower than that of the iPhone 12, which would line up with the slimmer notch that is expected on the iPhone 13 models.

The external Face ID hardware was apparently needed due to large-scale tests that were being performed to collect as much data as possible. This is said to have allowed Apple to give a large number of employees new hardware without distributing an unreleased iPhone.

Participating employees were asked to wear combinations of face masks and glasses in a range of conditions to test the new hardware. Employees were simply asked to perform the tests but were not told what specific changes had been made to the Face ID sensor array in the case.

The new hardware reportedly allows iPhones to unlock with Face ID while wearing a mask, without the aid of an Apple Watch, and with foggy glasses.

While Prosser highlighted the striking similarity of the case's Face ID hardware with the expected smaller notch on the upcoming iPhone 13, it is not clear if this improved Face ID will arrive with the iPhone 13 or a future iPhone model.

The tests were apparently conducted recently, so Prosser suggested that if the improved Face ID is not immediately available with the iPhone 13, it could be introduced with a later software update.

Prosser elected to not share the images of the alleged prototype unit due to identifying marks found on it and shared a number of renders based on the images instead.

Why don't simply use iris scanner like Samsung s8 and s9?
As shown in youtuber test, it's more secure than face id as it can differentiate twins

Is it just me or did Apple make some improvements already? My iPhone 11 has been able to unlock with Face ID (I don’t have an Apple Watch) when I’ve been wearing a mask for the past couple of months now.

This was the most interesting part for me. Has this escalation in the War of the Leakers happened before?

It definitely happened in a number of occasions before, even last year.
This is not the first time Prosser shows renders instead of actual photos to protect the source.

Prosser is stupid and this article is stupid.

"Large number of employees" yet no one has even a picture of the thing? A render for no particular reason, based on zero info whatsoever?

Some kind of scanner that is essentially a portable xray/CAT/MRI machine because it can pass through masks and identify the organic matter below it? Really?

jez... just add the power button ID already and move away from the problem other than creating another stupid problem

Power button ID is useless for those of us who wear gloves. When the pandemic is gone, winters will still happen.

Apple should be responding to large-scale mask wearing by pulling out all the stops in developing an under-screen Touch ID sensor or by creating a power-button based sensor for the iPhone instead of kneecapping Face ID and making it inherently much weaker by only looking at, what, a quarter of the face?

True or not, I'll guess we'll find out in a few weeks.

Apple are very confident about the phone this year and think it will sell better than the 12. Promotion, better cameras and a smaller notch aren't exactly killer apps, but Face ID that works with a mask on!?!? Now that's a killer app!

It will fly off the shelves if true. Seriously, if true, just about everybody is going to want this phone. It will be sold out in Asia in minutes.

This will be one of their great iPhone events if this is true.

I do understand how the virus works. Not that much different from other viruses of the same family. And also, I do know how small they are to not be impacted by a mask, and you don't have to have Einsteins brain cells to understand that on a microscopic level, the viruses are super tiny compare to the holes of the fabric that mask is made of. The only thing face masks do pretty well is minimise your ability to breath, and surely that can't be a good thing for your lungs, can it? We are living in a new world where people believe anything and question NOTHING. In other words, a world of sheep. That's the state of today'w world. We are living in a ‘biosecurity state’, a new world (Minus Sweden who decided to say NO to it) in which politicians and the scientists who advise them decide that suppressing disease is more important than the human freedoms we take for granted. Now that is SAD.

  1. People were also asked to wear masks during SARS.
  2. The virus is small, yes. But it is carried within water droplets.
  3. A proper mask stops the water droplets from passing through. A good cloth mask reduces the distance of travel of droplets. A bad cloth mask breaks down the droplet further and actually makes things worse.
  4. A surgical mask doesn’t affect your breathing as it doesn’t properly seal against your face.
  5. Therefore, the advice is to wear a surgical mask and another cloth mask on top of it. The former is to stop you from spreading, the latter is to reduce your inhalation of droplets from others.
