I’m at 40 months with my iPhone X and just hit 80% battery. I attribute that to charging overnight with a slow wireless puck charger.

If your iPhone (depending on your routine) can't adopt Optimized Battery Charging, overnight charging is what ruined your battery because it sits there halve the night with 100% (I ruined mine with a dock in the office).

Fast charging is bad for your battery too. I ruined the battery of my iPad Pro 12,9(1st) by fast charging it with an Apple 29W adapter (I guess this wasn't fully supported) Is far as I know Apple today only fast charges the first 50% and then goes slower to preserve battery lifetime.

The funniest of all of this is that they claim that everyone already has a charger (most likely from previous iPhone purchases) yet they include a cable that does not even work with all these chargers! So either you buy another charger to be able to use this cable OR you have a new cable that becomes more waste because you cannot even use it! environmental my a
The funniest thing about this claim is that you use you existing charger if you want to.

and you get a new modern USB C charger so it can connect to their new laptops, meaning you don’t have to buy the WHOLE thing in the near future.

A fast charging should NOT be used as regular charging! The reason is that the battery deteriates much faster, as more heat on the battery results in that. Charge your phone over night with normal charger and your battery will last long. The fast charge should be used if you need to charge quickly before something.
That, and wireless charging at any speed is nearly as bad as corded fast charging due to the heat generated.

I just dropped my iPhone X and broke the screen. Now face ID is acting funny. It’s the only reasons I’m getting a new iPhone this fall. Replacement screens on a 4 year old phone is still expensive.

Apple - we’ve removed the power adaptor for environmental reasons since everyone has one at home

Apple - we’ll keep changing the power adapter every year
They didn't change anything. You want them to stop improving charging and similar just so people who have older model chargers won't feel bad? Maybe they should stop making their phones faster too.

Shameless money grab. But honestly, Apple really cares about their customers….

I know, you don’t HAVE to buy the faster charger. But Apple knows that if they come out with something new, even if it only marginally improves performance, there are those who will buy whatever it is.
That's right, you don't have to. At all. By your rationale, every improvement Apple makes is a shameless money grab.

They never really claimed that. Also, if you have a different charger, changes are you also have a cable for it. They included the cable for the charger standard which is here now, namely USB-C, which you can buy plenty of from different companies.

A cable has much less environmental impact than a charger.

If LTPO and 120mHz means no PWM headaches I’ll spend $1000 on a cellphone.

I’m very guilty of this. Once a new standard of charging is launched, or they support faster and faster charging speeds, all of those old charging bricks and cables from Apple or Anker are either donated or thrown out. I just purchased a few Anker 20w charging cubes and a MagSafe charger. My old 18w bricks and Anker wireless charging pad are now going to be donated.

Same port with different standard. 25 watts could be lots of things. 5V, 5A or 9V, 2.78A or 12.5V, 2A which can be incompatible with current Power Delivery.

Remember the 29watts Apple's USB-C brick that's actually incompatible with Magsafe?

The new charger could support PPS so it can do custom voltages. 10V with 2.5A sounds about right.

Or just make it wireless charging only and drop the bricks altogether. Haven't physically plugged my phones in for years since the X came out, my 12 Pro Max so far since it launched last year is still reporting 100% battery health.

Here come the downvotes 😄
You do realize that at the end of the cord connected to your "wireless" charger is -- a brick?

Every wireless charger requires a brick, so how do we drop bricks altogether? And instead of carrying a small brick in our bag, we should carry a small brick AND a wireless pad? How is this better again?

For a company that is supposedly eco-conscious, wireless charging only would be a pretty bad look given how horribly inefficient it is.

I think they're saying the opposite. Their iPhone battery survived over 3 years because they did slow charging, not that it was ruined by slow charging.

Then just continue to not plug it in.

I’ve been using a 30 watt adapter for my iPhone 12 Pro Max anyway because, anecdotally, I can definitely tell that it goes up to 22.5 watts just like the iPhone 11 Pro Max does (or at least that it goes higher than 20 watts).

When the battery is low (I would say <35%), the difference between using a 30 watt charger and a 20 watt charger is actually quite shocking if you own one of the Max phones.

The faster the better imo. I do Grubhub part time and there are times I’ll head out with a low battery (I’m working all day for my full time job). Just forget to top off. And I’m constantly unplugging and plugging my phone in the car. So a faster charger would be fantastic

I’m on 45 months with my iPhone X and it’s at 86% battery health😜. I keep wondering if I should buy a new battery though because the 86% really doesn’t seem to be 86% of what 100% used to be🤪

Apple really can't win here at MR...

... comes out with a new capability - one segment cries about shameless money grabbing

... doesn't come out with a new capability - another segment cries about how Apple just rehashes the same stuff without innovating or improving...

A little surprised with these comments honestly, I see people all the time saying they wish the iPhone had faster charging speeds.
I also see and hear that, but I also overwhelmingly still see people using 5 and 10/12 W chargers. People who’ve had chargers for years just keep them plugged in and continue to use them.

I was going to post saying this. I know when I try to fast charge, my phone gets warm, which decreases battery life, so I go slow, unless I'm in desperate need of a quick charge.

To be honest that's most of the people I know. Most people simply don't care. They plug the phone in at night when going to be and in the morning when they wake up its charged. And that's all that matters to them.
