I'd like to see an option to limit fast charging as it does lead to increased wear and decreased battery life span. 99% of the time 5W charging is plenty for my needs. Maybe there could be a 'slow charge at night' option. Whilst during the day if I'm charging I likely do want it to charge as fast as possible.

This really isn’t that big a deal as the iPhone 12 Pro Max can already charge at a peak of 24 watts, according to my venerable usb-c tester.

Apple’s 30W usb-c charger and the 12 pro max negotiate 14.9 volts and 1.6 amps max, while other usb-c chargers negotiate 9 volts and approx 2.7 amps max, with a steady decline in amperage as the battery fills up. The tech is already in place.

Shameless money grab. But honestly, Apple really cares about their customers….

I know, you don’t HAVE to buy the faster charger. But Apple knows that if they come out with something new, even if it only marginally improves performance, there are those who will buy whatever it is.

Whoa... A shameless money grab! Shiver me timbers!

Some people will like having faster charging and will buy the more powerful charger. Some people won't care and pass on upgrading their charger, and use the one they already own. It's nice having that option.

Are you suggesting that's the only difference between the 12 and 13, and thus the only reason to upgrade?

This change is no different than the incremental improvements we see with WiFi speeds, or any of the other things that get upgraded as technology changes. For years, I’ve been using and upgrading my charging blocks, since I got the first 12w charger with my then iPad, given it shortened charging time with my iPhone. And with the now great quality inexpensive 20w and higher third party charging bricks, there really isn’t a reason to buy Apple branded bricks.

My 5W charger suits me just fine. It’s not like I need to charge my phone 5 times faster while I’m sleeping.

I also use one of my 5W charging bricks. Optimize charging works for me every night and I carry a Anker charger box for work, since my truck’s car charger port isn’t working. I rarely have to use the charger box.

If it isn't USB-C who give a crap. Staying with Lightening at this point is just pure stubbornness. Apple should switch to USB-C to make connecting to their own computers easier, unified cables, car connections, charges and headphones. The only reason not to is because they get paid for lightening patents.

Oh good, another $20 accessory for them to sell and require for all other accessories to get the fastest charging speed. Right after people shelled out the $20 for the 20w since no iPhone shipped with it...

I use the old 5W charger for overnight charging. Only fast charge during the day if I need a quick top-up.

5W charging is the way to longer battery life, and if I really need a fast charge there's always the USB-C power brick from the MacBook and a USB-C to Lightning cable. Hopefully everything will be charged via USB-C soon.

Apple - we’ve removed the power adaptor for environmental reasons since everyone has one at home

Apple - we’ll keep changing the power adapter every year
Faster charging so you can kill your battery faster!

I also see and hear that, but I also overwhelmingly still see people using 5 and 10/12 W chargers. People who’ve had chargers for years just keep them plugged in and continue to use them.

Speaking for myself only - with overnight charging while I'm sleeping, I don't really care if it takes seven hours or one hour... probably rather the slower charging for battery longevity.

I have higher wattage USBC multi-port chargers at a couple other locations in the house (kitchen, office), so faster charging capability could be handy. But again I already have these and thus don't need yet another single-port brick in the box.

They didn't change anything. You want them to stop improving charging and similar just so people who have older model chargers won't feel bad? Maybe they should stop making their phones faster too.

That's right, you don't have to. At all. By your rationale, every improvement Apple makes is a shameless money grab.

They never really claimed that. Also, if you have a different charger, changes are you also have a cable for it. They included the cable for the charger standard which is here now, namely USB-C, which you can buy plenty of from different companies.

A cable has much less environmental impact than a charger.
What they could do is allow 25w charging with the iPhone 12, or simply sell a 25w charger (since release) instead of a 20w one.

You don’t have to buy it…

It will still be USB C
Where did I say I have to buy it? However, if you want the fastest charging, you’ll need to buy it.

I expect for every battery capacity increase a new adaptor will be released. Why didn’t Apple do this in the past when they included the adapter. Reason is simple, price.

what happened to the statement they made about environmental reasons. they should give a 40W power adaptor for free for all and then talk all they want and change for the next 4 years :)

It's a naturally evolving system. No need to upgrade until you buy another power adapter.

probably fries the phone.
Actually Oneplus solution (Or more specifically Oppos) is one of the more clever ways of handling fast charging which results in them also having lower temps.

Link1 and Link 2, if interested to read up on how things work outside of the Apple bubble :)

I'm sure 5w will still work...and if you have an ipad prod it comes with a beefy chargers...although you will be on the hood for a type c to lightning cable.
