If it isn't USB-C who give a crap. Staying with Lightening at this point is just pure stubbornness. Apple should switch to USB-C to make connecting to their own computers easier, unified cables, car connections, charges and headphones. The only reason not to is because they get paid for lightening patents.
There is speculation of a portless iPhone. It would not make sense to make a switch to USB-C just before dropping the port altogther. A switch now will make all existing Lightning accessories redundant and would be justified provided they plan to stick to it long enough.

Actually Oneplus solution (Or more specifically Oppos) is one of the more clever ways of handling fast charging which results in them also having lower temps.

Link1 and Link 2, if interested to read up on how things work outside of the Apple bubble :)
It’s proprietary though and doesn’t work with all USB-C cables.

They may just recommend the 30W power adapter to utilize the faster charging speed?

maybe in similar fashion to the 18W becoming 20W and the price dropping from $29 to $19, maybe they will update the 30W (smaller with GaN?) and sell it for a bit less?

The funniest of all of this is that they claim that everyone already has a charger (most likely from previous iPhone purchases) yet they include a cable that does not even work with all these chargers! So either you buy another charger to be able to use this cable OR you have a new cable that becomes more waste because you cannot even use it! environmental my a
They dropped the price of the adapter at the same time.

Yes. This is what even I thought. There’s no reason to come up with a new adapter when there’s already one available. The 30W adapter is, however, more expensive, probably as it was meant for some of the MacBooks. We have to wait to see how much the price drops, if at all.

A more significant upgrade, in my view, would be adoption of GaN technology. Imagine getting Fast Charging with an adapter the size of the current 5W adapter.
Right?! I also want Apple to start using GaN (Gan II) technology in ALL their chargers! If the reverse could be done for receiving charging not sure if that’s possible or would help in charging speeds?

LOL Portless iPhone. With the current charging rate/speed compared to USB-C competition, along with loosing a lot of energy using Qi no thanks. You can keep that junk in the lab. Essential, that Ph-1 phone from Andy Ruben and team tried to use wireless-USB to carry data from A 360-degree camera, using magnetic power connection. It was good for that use, but that camera would not use a lot of energy.

Portless for loading an OS for a clean install, charging … not the way Apple has been so slow to improve charging speeds. Just no. Not right now. In a few years maybe but only if they get it right.

There was article earlier saying it’s likely but without timelines.

My guess is that a lot of the things that Apple doesn’t do is due to the challenges of manufacturing them at scale.

But it’s just as well that iPhones don’t come with chargers anymore, so people are free to buy whatever charger they want to complement it, not just Apple’s own stock chargers.

Apple does not care about our views. They will make changes to suit their business interests. For instance, there was an uproar when they dropped the headphone jack. But, they launched AirPods at around the same time and never looked back.

But, they are usually slow to make changes. OLED displays came to iPhones long after they first appeared on other phones.

If they ever decide to drop the Lightning port, it will be without any loss of functionality or performance. They could wait until MagSafe is more mature or even introduce a Smart Connector like the one on some iPad models. We’ll know for sure only when it’s out.

GaN chargers mean more efficient and rapid charging in much smaller chargers. I was wondering if using the tech to receive charging more efficiently - as in no restrictions to rapid charging without affecting battery capacity or battery life over long term (3yrs or less).

the industry has focused on faster charging to overlook the battery used is flawed. Be it technology application safety or licensing not yet granted based on a patent - we still don’t see any applicable use of graphene in batteries. We’ve seen it in a lab not in an applied use.

Where did I say I have to buy it? However, if you want the fastest charging, you’ll need to buy it.

I expect for every battery capacity increase a new adaptor will be released. Why didn’t Apple do this in the past when they included the adapter. Reason is simple, price.

Well they have the ability now to give people a choice on whether they value paying extra for slightly faster charging in the next model.

Rather than bumping up the price on every iPhone sold.

I’m not sure what needs to change in the phone for this. All references I could find are only for the adapter.

Battery technology is, of course, a different matter. We can only hope for some breakthroughs leading to a sustainable solution.

I hope they never go portless. We need the ability to plug it into vehicles, computers and charging when wireless charging isn't available. Sorry but Lightening is long past stupid already. Why make iPads USB-C and not lightening or portless ? This is where apple is letting a few loud internet trolls ruin it for the rest of us.

Imagine a world where you can charge you phone, tablet, headphones and laptop from 1 single charger.... What about the cable nightmare we have, going USB-C solves that. Cars are coming with USB-C now. Just move on already

There are still many differences between these devices. iPad and MacBooks still do not have wireless charging. MacBooks are slated to get back MagSafe and I wish they had added a MagSafe to USB-C adapter instead. The Apple Watch has proprietary wireless charging and will hopefully switch to Qi. I think Apple is ultimately moving towards a long-term solution. Since the iPhone is their most sold product, they are being more cautious about it.

Exactly.

Back in the old days of the flip-phone... hardly anyone could share the same charging cable.

I had a Motorola... gf had an LG... buddy had a Samsung... etc. Then there was Audiovox, Ericsson... the list goes on and on.

Hell... even the same manufacturer could use different cables. It was a mess.

At least now the charging cable situation is a little better.

On the device-end of the cable... we've got Apple (Lightning) and everyone else (USB-C)

Though we're still figuring out the charger-end of the cable... USB-A vs USB-C

Personally... every new charger I buy is now USB-C... so at least that end of my cables will be standardized.

:)

To be fair back in the old days you got a cable built into the brick, and it was IN THE BOX even if your phone was $100 plastic garbage or $750. You got what you needed to use the phone all in the box.

You got the best charging experience the phone could offer in the box when you paid for the phone. Not this shameless money grab of no brick and then changing it slightly yearly so if you want the best experience you have to keep buying a new one. And the phone not going down in price either from high hundreds to thousands of dollars already making huge net profits alreay; shameless.

Because you know #theenvironment as if people are not throwing away those old chargers at some point...

Apple used to include a 5W adapter with all models (until the Pro models got the 18W one). I’m not sure how that counts as the best charging experience at least for the models with support for Fast Charging.

The price of the 20W USB-C adapter dropped when they removed the adapter from the box. You can always wait for a significant improvement before deciding to upgrade.

Has nothing to do with the discussion at all. Discussing phones pre-iPhone here. Pre USB-C and micro-usb where every phone had its own proprietary connector.

Such Apple speak. The price of the brick is irrelevant. $999 for a phone with a $20 brick or $999 for a phone without a $20 brick. Gee I wonder which one makes Apple more money. 🤔

The environment was a BS excuse to give less for the same money. Use some basic common sense here.

Apple doesn’t need any excuses to give less for the same amount. They will do whatever suits there business interests. I’m not sure who needs to have common sense here.

True... but you got a Motorola charging cable attached to a brick for your phone... and your wife got a Samsung charging cable attached to a brick for her phone... and so on.

And you both needed different car chargers too.

That's what we were talking about. Every manufacturer had their own port back then.

Today it's a lot more standardized. It's either USB-C or Lightning on the device-end of the cable.

And yes... my iPhone 12 did not come with a charging brick. But guess what? I was already an iPhone user. I already had Lightning charging solutions all over my house, in my car, in my office, etc. I didn't need to buy a charger for my iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Sure... if someone is buying their first iPhone today... they might have to buy a USB-C charger if they don't already have one. I can see that frustration.

But I can also see Apple's point of not wanting to ship 200 million chargers with iPhones every year. Other companies have been providing chargers for years. Anker, Belkin, etc.

Remember... those companies were already selling chargers (better chargers, smaller chargers, multi-port chargers) even when all phones included chargers.

As for "throwing away old chargers"... I've been using the same chargers for years. As others have said... the chargers last much longer than the phones.

So I'm glad Apple isn't including their crappy single-port charger in the box.

:)
