Because iPhone 8 gigantic bezels are way better than a notch 😀 I can understand the Touch ID thing, but if they add it this year...
I can't un-see the notch when I'm looking at the display. The bezels disappear. I've tried, I just can't look past that screen flaw. Meanwhile I'm saving a lot of money. I used to upgrade my phone almost every year before the notch.

no apple won't release this without LTPO displays. This will be hardware feature not software on iPhones.

my guess is the non pros won't get this until 2022
Awww! I wanted to keep my 12 Pro Max for awhile. But this feature I REALLY want. lol. This will be a year to test my ability to value my bank over my wants. :(

Nah, android phones are notorious for shocking battery life when it comes to real world use, adding 120hz and AOD back then would of been a big mistake by apple, now is the time to add them features, chipset is way more efficient now, and the LTPO display will also help with battery life.

Under screen fingerprint sensor is still garbage, prefer it in the power button, or apple make a bigger sensor that works better and you don’t have to look at the screen when placing your finger to unlock.

Apple doesn’t rush anything no matter what the completion is doing, if you can call them completion that is.

Unless it works flawlessly, it won’t see the light of day with apple.
I would almost agree except that last part, the butterfly keyboard was as half baked as it gets, and if rumors r true bye bye Touch Bar as well

That’s actually curious as everyone feels the opposite, including me. I obviously prefer a notch less iPhone, but i got used to it and do not notice at all. Good money saving then, but you will need to a long term plan, as ím afraid we are not going to have a notch less iPhone until some more years.

This year's iPhone 13 lineup will include an always-on display with a 120hz refresh rate, improved camera capabilities for astrophotography, stronger MagSafe magnets, and a finer matte finish on the back, according to leaker Max Weinbach (via YouTube channel EverythingApplePro).

Weinbach is a well-known leaker and has shared information via the YouTube channel in the past regarding the 2020 iPhone 12 lineup, some of which came true. Regardless, take the following with a grain of salt. According to their sources, Apple is planning to include an always-on display in the iPhone 13 series, with the technology being similar to the always-on display in the Apple Watch Series 5 and later.

Always-on displays are typical in most flagship Android smartphones, and it allows users to see information on their screen at all times, without having to power on or unlock the device. Ever since the iPhone X, which was the first iPhone to feature an OLED display, many have speculated Apple will bring this feature to iPhone users.

OLED displays use less power than LCD displays, since each pixel is individually controlled, unlike LCD panels which use backlight and light up all pixels, even if it's just to show a small piece of information on the screen. With OLED displays, Apple is able to only light up the pixels needed to show users the time, battery, or some form of indicator for app notifications, without using a significant amount of battery power.

Weinbach claims that the always-on display will look like a "toned down lockscreen," where the clock and battery charge are always visible, and past notifications are shown through "a bar and icons." When users receive a notification, the notification will "pop up normally except that the screen will not entirely light up." Instead, "it will display it just like you're used to right now, except dimmed down and only temporarily," according to the leaker.

The leaker also "confirms" that a 120hz ProMotion refresh rate is happening on the 2021 Pro iPhone models, a feature that was widely rumored to appear on the iPhone 12. An always-on and ProMotion display would not require a change in physical design, and that yields to the fact that Weinbach reports there will be no change to the actual chassis on the iPhone 13 compared to the iPhone 12 lineup. The only possible hardware change will be a matte back with a "grippier, more comfortable" feeling, similar to the finishing on the back of the Google Pixel series.

Internally, MagSafe will be getting "considerably" stronger, according to the leak. The iPhone 12 features MagSafe on the back that allows users to magnetically attach different accessories and offers an alternative way to charge the device, however, the magnets have been criticized by some for being weak. Apple's looking to alleviate those concerns by adding stronger magnets, although the addition is not expected to be the sole reason for a rumored increase in device thickness. As for the cameras, Weinbach reports that Apple is increasing its efforts in astrophotography.

Astrophotography, the photography of astronomy, typically requires complicated camera setups to proficiently capture the night times dark sky. The integration of the ability into the iPhone is expected to be seamless, with the leak claiming the iPhone will automatically switch to the mode when it registers a user pointing to the sky. The mode will allow the phone to detect different artifacts such as the moon and stars and adjusts settings such as exposure accordingly. Corroborating Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the leak says the ultra-wide camera across the entire lineup will be getting an improved sensor and lens.

The newest information from the leaks points towards the ability to take portrait videos on this year's iPhone. Users have been able to take portrait photos since the launch of the iPhone 7 Plus, but it has remained entirely limited to photos. Portrait mode adds a depth feel to your photos, blurring the background and keeping the center subject fully in focus. With videos, the task becomes much harder since the subject is actively moving, making it harder to add a depth effect in real-time.

The new information joins an already long list of features we're expecting for the 2021 iPhone. A Bloomberg report suggests that the biggest headlining feature of the lineup will be the reintroduction of Touch ID on the iPhone. According to that report, Apple is testing burying the Touch ID sensor below the display, allowing users to unlock their device if Face ID is deemed unusable, such as when you're wearing a mask. Unlike the iPhone 12 which saw delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the iPhone 13 is expected to launch on time in September.

Always on is cool. As long as it’s optional. Hopefully there will be an off switch.

120hz display - 18 months behind the competition.

Always on display - 5 years behind the competition

Portrait mode videos - 2 years behind the competition

Under display finger print sensor - 3 years behind the competition
People don't buy iPhones because they're "first" in a certain feature, but because they're usually best. I'd way rather have it done right than done first, thanks.

If the Apple Watch is any indication - should be.

I love the idea of being able to glance at my phone without having to interact with it to tell me what the time is, etc. Granted. I don't need it - my MBP tells me the time, etc.

What if I disagree with you and say that Android is way better?
There's no point arguing with you, because the fact is that Android is better, has more features and more freedom than iOS.
Samsung has had always on display forever and it has worked very well. If I had to choose whether I'd get iPhone SE (which is outdated by it's design) or Samsung at the same price point I'd get Samsung.

Apple has often always stayed behind and copied features from Android. iPhones even have way worse batteries than most Android phones.

Wow, thanks for stopping by this Apple-specific forum to talk about this. I assure you everyone here is utterly shaken by these revelations and is reconsidering their preferences for iPhones. We're all just poor ignorant fools here and have been enlightened by what you've said. By all means, please visit the Mac threads here as well and let us all know why PCs or Chromebooks are better choices than Macs!

How many of those did Nokia sell? Do you think Apple could have scaled that technology to manufacturing 100,000,000+ iPhones?
Why not? It was just an OLED screen. Also it's not like Nokia was the only one with OLED, you have Samsung that manufactures a huge amount of OLED screens. Also its not like they had to do it the same year, but they took 9 years to do it.

Just clone the S21 Ultra and put iOS on it otherwise a lot of iPhone users are switching.

Any information that comes from Everythingapplepro's channel is not what I would consider an excellent or reliable source for new upcoming iPhone features.. I'll wait for the well informed tech analysts that have proven track records on the subject to give their predictions...

No, I obviously dont, but what kind of issues does it have? Is what he was talking about. I mean, you can find it useless, but does it have flaws?
non responsive touch, glitched esc, just to name a few. OBVIOUSLY its not effected by the broad consumer basis, but the fact that the upcoming mbp will most likely not have them, proves my original point

I haven’t experienced those issues and also dont see any base to treat it like a widespread problem. And well, the fact of getting rid of them in the next generations do not prove anything. They also got rid of other MacBook features in the past not necessarily meaning they were a fail. Unlikely the butterfly keyboard 😀

Yeah, and Apple will do it better when they do it. :)

Apple isn't concerned with being the first to implement these features; being first has never been their priority. Someone has to be the guinea pig, sure, but it's not a bad thing that Apple waits to perfect these things before adding them.

They haven’t added TouchID to their phones. Although certainly welcomed and I hope that rumor does come true. Their iOS 14.5 workaround, which does require the user to have a newer Apple Watch on watchOS 7.3 has a really convenient workaround by allowing Apple Watch to unlock your phone. It works every time and has proven to be very handy already, but TouchID is an even better solution. Masks aren’t going anywhere for a couple years I imagine.
Not everyone owns an Apple Watch so they need a longer term solution. Although I do
welcome the work around in iOS 14.5. Hopefully it won’t be long until it’s released because I’m fed up of putting my pin code in like an animal to quote Rene Ritchie.
