If this is true it's going to make my yearly upgrade form the 13pro max well worth it

I still don't understand the need for 8K.

If you film something in 8K and watch it on a 4K screen, your resolution is maxed out at 4.

What's the point of being able to shoot in 8 if the max screen resolution is 4?

I gather very few people have an 8K screen.

I've been waiting for an iPhone mini done right, which is why I don't own one yet. The latest one doesn't have enough battery life and the camera bump is just a monstrosity compared to the phone's size. I was hoping with the 14 series Apple would have worked it out, but this rumor doesn't even mention the existence of a mini :-(.
There supposedly won’t be a mini next year. You should get a 13 mini, it’s a great device. I actually sold my 13 Pro and just picked up a 13 mini and the only things I’m missing in order of importance are.. macro lens, telephoto lens, more battery, LiDAR. The 13 Pro is just so damn big. Really loving the mini’s size. It just disappears in your pocket (and hand, it’s so damn light in comparison).

For years the vast majority couldn’t see their iPhone videos in 4K. Many still haven’t. Didn’t stop them from having to have it. Don’t look for logic. They’ll happily buy into 8k and 48mp and apple will have marketing ready on how incredible it is.

Great, iPhones will become entry Macs. This proofs there shouldn’t be 8GB laptops in 2022.
macOS supports virtual memory/swap files whereas iOS does not, therefore 8GB goes further on macOS than on iOS. Plus 8GB is fine for casual consumer’s needs in even in 2022. Heck the base iPad still ships with 3GB RAM and it does just fine.

Ugh. No. I don’t want these crazy large files taking up space. I hope they at least allow us to change the resolution in the settings.
It will probably be downsampled to 12MP - so you’ll get an extra sharp but normal size file. And 48MP raw files if you want.

Nokia did just that back in 2012.

8K eh? I'm still editing my stuff in 1080p.. which is good enough for the YouTubes.. and the majority of viewers on phones watching the content

You holding out so long for the perfect iPhone Mini that Apple will stop making them. Think about that.

Thats enough ram to run MacOS as well as a Mac. I wouldn't mind if it only ran MacOS while docked to a laptop case or cinema display looking case. I just want one computer, not 4 different computing devices I have to sync over the cloud to get to my stuff..

it is clear that the profitability motive is stronger than the motive to innovate. Smartphone technology is reaching its limits.
Just curious, but what qualifies as “innovation” to you? No doubt the smartphone platform is mature across the industry, but what features would people call innovative at this point.

Personally I find the CPU performance year over year and the changes there to be innovative but I’m a sucker for reading up on what’s new in SoC land every year.

For customer, scaling down means potentially more “details” on the screen and image looks sharper and clearer. For professionals, higher res means more headroom for post processing. 8K isn’t useless.

8K is not going to happen. It's not mainstream yet and Apple doesn't jump out in front like that. I do believe megapixels will increase but I don't think 48 is the answer. I'm guessing 24 which should provide great details in photos.

Just give me one lens with a 1" or APS-C sensor, even if it's only 8 or 12 megapixels. I don't need a telephoto lens or wide lens with low quality and poor low-light performance, and I don't like the look of a giant camera hump with 3+ lenses.
Surely, with a bigger sensor you’d need a thicker phone to accommodate the bigger distance between lens and sensor.

Pu also said the standard iPhone 14 models will start with 64GB of storage, despite the iPhone 13 lineup starting at 128GB of storage.

As backwards as this sounds, I could actually see this happening so that the base model 14 can get closer to the Mini’s current starting price.

Well the only tangible benefit to the larger camera sensor is better detail zoomed in. Judging by how well the 13 Pro cameras hold up to Samsung and Google’s much larger sensors for most pictures, I’d say that’s not a selling point for 13 Pro owners. The 8GB of RAM is nice, but I’ve noticed my 13 Pro keeps more apps open for much longer than the 4GB of my 11 Pro so I don’t see that as a big selling point. The 13 Pro is a really well rounded device so it will take something bigger than camera bump and RAM increase to tempt me.
