What do you mean. The notch, on either the iPhone or the MacBooks, is not just a graphic styling. It is a functional change to expand the content area of the screen. We’ve always expected Apple to eventually shrink those notches, which they did last year on the iPhone and now even more on this year’s phone. The expectation is as soon as Apple can shrink the components enough, they will get rid of the notches. In the meantime, the notches are minor annoyances with functional benefits.
I really like the notch. I don’t know why people hate them. The notch on the macs do suck though, why having a notch but not putting Face ID on them?

This is pretty neat stuff man! The pill shaped notch might end up being way cooler than most people anticipated.
I agree — we have no good idea how big it will be, and if it is two separate cutouts, will there be a subtle animation when they join? I think they are planning on keeping this design for 4-5 years, and then maybe they eliminate it completely.

Why not make the pill smaller and have the privacy lights next to it? I don't understand why there needs to be a gap between the sensors.
What possible use is a few pixels between the two sensors going to do? Same with the pixels above this pill cutout. Its completely useless. For as much grief as people give the notch at least it was practical. The hole punch method is just ridiculous.

Good, I think it looks much better this way. Cleaner, simpler. I was going to do this anyway with a modified background if it shipped with the dual cutouts. Was most likely their plan all along though to be honest.

Do you really like it? 😧 Is this you?

It will be interesting to experience how movies look and feel with a pill shaped hole on the side. In full view that is. I’ve gotten used to part of the image being cut on the side on 12/13, but now some of the image will be on the thin edge beyond the punchout. Hmm…

I still hate the idea that anything intrudes into my screen. Instead there should be a black bar at the top that could house all kinds of stuff like speakers for example. Maybe manufacturers in the beginning were proud that they can produce screens that are not rectangular, but basically all content is rectangular and therefore she screen should also be.

I understand you don’t like the pill shape design, but I think you are missing the point as to why Apple went in this direction… it’s more so a bridge towards the end goal of having an a no camera (visible) front display.

Take for instance the UDC technology, granted… it’s still in its infancy. But Android OEMs had to get to the pill shape design then later it became a single hole punch which in turn brought UDC technology. I take Apple approach as a step toward evolution. Obviously they can keep the notch until UDC technology is fully ready… but that could take years.

So, in this approach it gives user a fresh new look while in an effort to build for the future.
I see so many comments saying something similar to this similar to this but I just don’t see it. It’s a notch with a useless strip of screen above it.

The improvement is going to be determined by how low the bottom of the hole is. If it is lower and Apple did this just to put that useless strip of screen above it just to make it not a notch then it’s actually worse.

I think this is just a change for looks instead of an actual functional change and I understand that because every android phone on the market has some sort of punch hole camera so Apple wanted to have their phone with one as well. I just hope this isn’t a downgrade when it comes to the obstruction being lower on the screen. I don’t think it will be though because that would be silly and I don’t think Apple would do that.

This! I was going to say this, too.
I think this is a more of a looks change versus actual functional improvement. Perhaps it’s just one of those things that will have to grow on me when it comes to looks. It does seem like this is the preferred aesthetic design for most people so maybe people are just tired of the notch.

That'd be my personal preference too, at least until the tech for the sensors & camera got small enough to fit a thinner area or advanced to the point where it could go behind the screen. I can't imagine Apple didn't look at a larger bezel as an option, but decided that a notch would lead to less complaining than a "giant bezel." Going "all screen" was the big thing at the time, so a notch was probably the path of least resistance. It also gave them the ability to claim a larger diagonal screen size than the phones would have had otherwise. At least they found good ways to make use of the space on either side of the notch.

I'm much happier with the pill shape look than I was with a notch. Yes, there's a small, unusable area of the screen still, but at least this makes the device look like it's actually "all screen" without having little ears sticking up on each side.

If I had a choice I would give up the selfie camera but that wouldn’t fix Face ID. I know a lot of people want to post selfies on Instagram or video on TikTok so I’m probably in the minority.

I hope that Apple might make this available for use as a notification light too. I left iOS years ago for OnePlus, which for years had a customizable LED you could use for various notifications. They have since dropped the feature, but it was something I used quite a bit and found very useful to know what kind of notification I was getting without having to actually pick up and turn on the phone's display
