I’m ok with Apple pushing new tech to upper tier iPhones only. It makes sense to do it this way, just like so many companies do with other product categories. I’m also hoping they start offering new performance oriented iPhone case materials, like titanium and ceramic, not to mention sapphire for screens. I’d pay the higher price for a titanium framed sapphire screen iPhone, then live with it for 3-5 years, which would be no problem as it would survive twice that given the better materials.

There is nothing new in this article. How many times do we need to be given this “news”? Doesn’t it cease to be news after the first time we’re told about it?!

While we're still around 10 months away from Apple introducing the iPhone 15 lineup, rumors already suggest that the higher-end Pro models will have even more exclusive features than usual compared to the standard models next year.

In September, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that strong sales of iPhone 14 Pro models would likely encourage Apple to increase differentiation between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, although it's worth noting that many hardware changes are likely planned at least a few years in advance.

There are currently at least five features rumored to be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models:
  • A17 chip: iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with an A17 Bionic chip manufactured based on TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, providing performance and efficiency improvements, according to Japanese publication Nikkei Asia. The report claimed that 2023 could mark the second year in a row in which only the Pro models of the new iPhone lineup feature Apple's latest chip.
  • Faster USB-C port: iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a USB-C port with support for at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which would result in the devices having significantly faster data transfer speeds with a cable compared to existing iPhones with Lightning. Kuo said the USB-C port on standard iPhone 15 models will remain limited to USB 2.0 speeds like Lightning.
  • Increased RAM: iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with an increased 8GB of RAM, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, while the standard models will likely continue to have 6GB of RAM as they do currently. Additional RAM can allow apps like Safari to keep more content active in the background, preventing the app from reloading content when reopened.
  • Solid-state buttons: iPhone 15 Pro models will feature solid-state volume and power buttons, according to Kuo. The analyst said the devices will be equipped with two additional Taptic Engines that provide haptic feedback to simulate the feeling of pressing the buttons, without them physically moving, similar to the Home button on the latest iPhone SE or the trackpad on newer MacBooks.
  • Increased optical zoom for iPhone 15 Pro Max: The iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a periscope telephoto lens, according to Kuo. This could result in the device having at least 10x optical zoom, compared to 3x on iPhone 14 Pro models.
Due to the increased differentiation, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the iPhone 15 Pro Max will potentially be renamed as the iPhone 15 Ultra.

Pushing customers towards the Pro models would help Apple to increase the iPhone's average selling price. The trend already began this year when only the iPhone 14 Pro models received Apple's latest A16 Bionic chip, with the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models still equipped with last year's A15 Bionic chip.

Apple will likely announce the iPhone 15 lineup next September as usual. With many months remaining until the devices launch, it's likely that additional features will surface, so the info we have right now is only a glimpse at what to expect.

Make one of those "exclusive" features only available on the Pro version a Home Button with TouchID and ...

Otherwise?

Blow it out of your ass Tim.

haptic buttons? I like the innovation but not sure about this one. I’ve struggled with haptic buttons. Unfortunately a lot of car companies have done this; and they are frustrating to use.

Yup, I have quite a few customers who hate the trackpad on recent MBPs for this very reason...

Now, the Apple trackpad is lightyears ahead of what my customers have with even the most recent Dell laptops.. but.. for many it still feels like a step back in that no matter how high they crank up the feedback it never feels like it's doing anything to them.

It just seems like a shame that I have both Apple and Dell using customers who *need* to use/travel with a mouse just so the $2000+ laptop works for them? Seems like when anyone pays any of these companies that much, it should .. work/feel right?

Especially with Apple pushing thinner and lighter.. Needing to pack more crap in the bag just so the laptop is usable for them seems ... unfortunate.

Oh well?

what bothers me is that they seem to also differentiate pro and max again , which is annoying for those who can't use such big of a phone
Yeah, I just can't use a device as big as the Max or Ultra as it's rumoured to be called next year. The smaller Pro is absolutely perfect. It's disappointing if this becomes the 'gimped' Pro version missing features of the larger phone, but still carries a very, very premium price. They should have parity with the obvious exception of battery size.

At this point, just simply kill the lineup and its ridiculous naming and revert back to the old one : just 1 iPhone in 2 sizes with all the bells and whistles and that's it. The other models won't sell anyways.

But no, it's as if Apple's intention is to actually make the lineup as messy as possible.

I for one want to buy the iPhone Centris 675AV SE that still includes a Home Button with TouchID and 512GB storage next year.

I'm not the only one?

There are literally dozens of us! Dozens!*

But, seriously though.. shut up and take my money.

:)

*I'm making fun of myself here.. But I do have a non-small number of customers who will likely stop buying iPhones when there's no Home Button version available. Yes, this skews older, but a few are younger than me, in their 30s.. Most would gladly pay more for a Home Button iPhone with better features (better cameras, more storage, etc) Now, if Apple continues to make an SE but doesn't make a single phone that these customers want? The Performa/LC575-style product line really stops making any sense?

Having only one model with usb c is weird to me. the following year all adopt it? I doubt it will be like that it should be all the phones at once.

Think of it more as re-news. You may have forgotten your outrage since the last time you read it, so this is an opportunity for everyone to come back together and rehash all the old arguments again because this time we'll surely all find common ground...

The rumor is the pro will have USB 3.2 or TB speeds. The non-pro models will still have USB C, although Apple is supposedly going to gimp it to use Lighting data speeds, which I think are USB 2.0, which are glacial speeds for 2022-2023.

Silly to limit fast transfer speeds to the top model…
I'm guessing the USB controller is in the SoC, so when the A16 migrates to the non-pro models, it will bring the USB2 controller with it. It sounds like they've provisioned for a higher speed controller in the A17 which will probably make it to the base models when that chip does.
