Cable transfer speeds? Who cares? Who is using cables to transfer data these days? ;D I even charge my phone with MagSafe so.... almost 0 cables.
People who need to do video transfers.Cable transfer speeds? Who cares? Who is using cables to transfer data these days?
Faster backups, transfers etc. Makes a huge difference. Using a 2.0 cable vs a 10gbps cable with my camera usually makes the difference of under 5 min vs over 20 minutes.Cable transfer speeds? Who cares? Who is using cables to transfer data these days? ;D I even charge my phone with MagSafe so.... almost 0 cables.
Who could have seen this EU-made disaster coming from a mile away? 🙋♂️ 🙋♂️ 🙋♂️ 🙋♂️
> EU mandates USB-C without specifying USB 3.0 minimum spec
> Apple ships billions of USB 2.0 cables with the box to keep costs down
> Users throw their USB-C 2.0 cables away when they realize these cables are slow, so instead of relying in AirDrop, they upgrade to an Anker USB3.0 cable
> Apple switches to portless phone several years later
> Users throw their USB3.0 cables away because portless iPhone is out and most of their other accessories are USB 4.1/5.0 with even better XYZ features
Meanwhile lightning hasn't changed one bit since ten years ago, did one thing really well: charge your iPhone, and there are billions of good functioning cables out there that didn't need to be thrown away before the portless iPhone.
Tell me again how this is a great idea for the environment.
As I predicted, big brain 5-head EU has absolutely no clue what they're doing. Thank them for the awfully annoying cookie popup on every single website too.
Some people that do video transfers choose to use cables, but that's just a personal preference. I do video transfers all the time. By the time that I get to my Mac, the videos are already synced through various cloud services.People who need to do video transfers.
You must have fast upload speeds. Or not shoot 4K /. Really short videos. Some people that do video transfers choose to use cables, but that's just a personal preference. IKEA have braided ones for ages. Even 100% MFI USB-C/ USB-A to Lightning (using both). But, are they braided? If they are braided, I am ready to forgive everything else
Calm down...there are a bunch of reasons with the main one being cost. And let's be real, 90+% of people buying these will not transfer a single bit of data or if they do, they won't care about speed. They will use the cord to charge...maybe.I am not getting non-pro iPhone so it won’t affect me, but this is just so freakin stupid. There is no justifiable reason to do this, and it’s not like people will get non-pro iPhone just because of fast usb speed.
If Apple cannot design phones without crippling performance when used under full speed usb-c, especially at that price, Apple should not be selling that phone. This is just ridiculous behavior from Tim and his posse who are doing this just to just egg EU.
Not really. You can upload a GB of data in a 2-3 minutes at 4G speeds. So if I'm out shooting video, the video is easily uploaded to the cloud and downloaded to my Mac while I'm out.You must have fast upload speeds. Or not shoot 4K /. Really short videos.
For me I've always transfered with something like Send anywhere locally to my computer. Usually get around 800mbps transfer speeds that way.
I think you're missing the big picture here. I take it as confirmation that the regular iPhone will be limited to USB-2 speeds. It won't help to upgrade the cable. That's the real issue in my opinion.I see it more as "Apple could, but they don't have to."
The next iPhone will still come with a charging cable, as it does right now. That's all there is to this news. Nothing's changed. Want a faster transfer speed? Get one from Anker or Ugreen or a myriad of other brands on amazon.
I do not see why something that has been standard practice across android phones for years is suddenly a dick move when Apple does it, and only for iPhones, and when all the usb-c cables shipped with apple products for purposes of charging have sported 2.0 speeds. My iPad Pro and my M1 MBA for instance.
Let's just call it what it is - manufactured outrage for the sake of controversy and clicks.
So looking at the cable the iPad Pro ships with, you would also incorrectly assume iPad Pro is limited to USB-2 speeds.I think you're missing the big picture here. I take it as confirmation that the regular iPhone will be limited to USB-2 speeds. It won't help to upgrade the cable. That's the real issue in my opinion.
USB-3 should not be a pro differentiator. USB-2 is an obsolete standard. It hasn't been used since antiquity and doesn't belong on a premium phone in 2023.Love all these complaints.
If we care about this, why doesn't Apple include the same processor, better case materials, higher quality screen, extra cameras, LiDAR, ProRAW, and larger storage options on the non-Pro phones? Because it's a non-Pro phone and there are differentiators that explain the price difference.
- I'd wager about 98% of users haven't used a cable for data transfer in the last five year (other than CarPlay, which doesn't need that much data anyway).
- Of the 2% of users that have, 99% have done it so rarely, or so little data, that the slower speed is fine. Remember that this is as fast as the current Pro model goes.
- The 1% of the 2% of users are using it to transfer significant amounts of video. Those users aren't purchasing a non-Pro model anyway. If you're shooting that much video, you're buying the model with the better cameras, lenses, RAW, etc.
- Rumor is the Pro model has an additional chip to potentially support Thunderbolt, which means added cost. Why add more chips to a phone that isn't going to see any benefit since there are about five people in the world likely to use it on that model phone?
If it was only the cable I wouldn't jump to conclusions but there have been plenty of rumors about the regular iPhone being limited to USB-2 speeds. We'll know in less than a month. I hope it's not the case and if it's just the cable I actually don't think it's that big of a deal. Still a bit odd but not a huge deal.So looking at the cable the iPad Pro ships with, you would also incorrectly assume iPad Pro is limited to USB-2 speeds.
This is a charging cable, telling us nothing about the data transfer rate of the device.
Government agencies should not be in the business of designing technology.Who could have seen this EU-made disaster coming from a mile away? 🙋♂️ 🙋♂️ 🙋♂️ 🙋♂️

I think the funniest part about this is that the majority of android phones sold are still limited to 2.0 speeds. It's a meme to everyone, who understands technical specs.
It definitely does not matter to casual user who most likely never uses iPhone's port for data transfer nowadays.
Given that apple to this day still sells a 30 pin to lightning adapter, I guarantee you they’ll have a USB-C to lightning adapter on day one.I guess my Backbone controller for iPhone will be useless for new iPhones soon. What a PITA, that thing was not cheap and has no wireless function or power, relies entirely on Lightning port.

Just like I said myself already in my previous post here https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...usb-2-0-transfer-speeds.2399491/post-32402860I think the funniest part about this is that the majority of android phones sold are still limited to 2.0 speeds.
It’s not any different, this is just the Internet playing everyone’s favorite game of “Apple bad”.I'm not sure what the big fuss is though really.. why are we not complaining that Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola, and so on. All ship with 2.0 cables? It's not just apple shipping phones with 2.0 cables.
My S23 Ultra came with a 2.0 cable out of the box so how is that different than the iPhone coming with a 2.0 cable?
