Cable transfer speeds? Who cares? Who is using cables to transfer data these days? ;D I even charge my phone with MagSafe so.... almost 0 cables.
Faster backups, transfers etc. Makes a huge difference. Using a 2.0 cable vs a 10gbps cable with my camera usually makes the difference of under 5 min vs over 20 minutes.

Who could have seen this EU-made disaster coming from a mile away? 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️

> EU mandates USB-C without specifying USB 3.0 minimum spec
> Apple ships billions of USB 2.0 cables with the box to keep costs down
> Users throw their USB-C 2.0 cables away when they realize these cables are slow, so instead of relying in AirDrop, they upgrade to an Anker USB3.0 cable
> Apple switches to portless phone several years later
> Users throw their USB3.0 cables away because portless iPhone is out and most of their other accessories are USB 4.1/5.0 with even better XYZ features

Meanwhile lightning hasn't changed one bit since ten years ago, did one thing really well: charge your iPhone, and there are billions of good functioning cables out there that didn't need to be thrown away before the portless iPhone.

Tell me again how this is a great idea for the environment.

As I predicted, big brain 5-head EU has absolutely no clue what they're doing. Thank them for the awfully annoying cookie popup on every single website too.

Everything onwards of point 2 is just made up to suit your own argument, then you pat yourself on the back about what great foresight you have - while making up scenarios to match it.

Apple have been shipping usb c "charge cables" for ages, they shipped them with macbook pros and macbooks before moving to magsafe (https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MLL82ZM/A/usb-c-charge-cable-2m). They have usb 2 speeds (see the comparison note here https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208368#:~:text=The Apple USB-C Charge, the sleeve of each connector.)

They also ship with the ipad https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipad9940eda2/ipados

Is apple being cheap? Yeah. Is the whole world going to go and throw these away to buy faster cables? unlikely. In fact, now everyones using a standard, maybe they could stop including the cable at all.

AFAIK all USB-C cables included with Apple hardware are not USB 3 capable. The one that came with my MBA M1 isn't, and neither is the one that came with my iPad Pro M2.

Which is really stupid. All USB-C cables should do USB 3 at the bare minimum. USB-C is a goddamn mess.

I'm not sure what the big fuss is though really.. why are we not complaining that Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola, and so on. All ship with 2.0 cables? It's not just apple shipping phones with 2.0 cables.

My S23 Ultra came with a 2.0 cable out of the box so how is that different than the iPhone coming with a 2.0 cable?

Some people that do video transfers choose to use cables, but that's just a personal preference. I do video transfers all the time. By the time that I get to my Mac, the videos are already synced through various cloud services.
You must have fast upload speeds. Or not shoot 4K /. Really short videos.

For me I've always transfered with something like Send anywhere locally to my computer. Usually get around 800mbps transfer speeds that way.

But, are they braided? If they are braided, I am ready to forgive everything else
IKEA have braided ones for ages. Even 100% MFI USB-C/ USB-A to Lightning (using both).

Total waste of money to buy Apple ones then if MFI program is gone.

How these looks inside and under mfi tester - check was done by good Polish repair man after few years of people asking :D

I am not getting non-pro iPhone so it won’t affect me, but this is just so freakin stupid. There is no justifiable reason to do this, and it’s not like people will get non-pro iPhone just because of fast usb speed.

If Apple cannot design phones without crippling performance when used under full speed usb-c, especially at that price, Apple should not be selling that phone. This is just ridiculous behavior from Tim and his posse who are doing this just to just egg EU.
Calm down...there are a bunch of reasons with the main one being cost. And let's be real, 90+% of people buying these will not transfer a single bit of data or if they do, they won't care about speed. They will use the cord to charge...maybe.

Apple is taking the right path...assume it is for charging or CarPlay use only. Focus on higher wireless charging speeds. Most people transfer data wirelessy as well anyway.

Not really. You can upload a GB of data in a 2-3 minutes at 4G speeds. So if I'm out shooting video, the video is easily uploaded to the cloud and downloaded to my Mac while I'm out.

I see it more as "Apple could, but they don't have to."

The next iPhone will still come with a charging cable, as it does right now. That's all there is to this news. Nothing's changed. Want a faster transfer speed? Get one from Anker or Ugreen or a myriad of other brands on amazon.

I do not see why something that has been standard practice across android phones for years is suddenly a dick move when Apple does it, and only for iPhones, and when all the usb-c cables shipped with apple products for purposes of charging have sported 2.0 speeds. My iPad Pro and my M1 MBA for instance.

Let's just call it what it is - manufactured outrage for the sake of controversy and clicks.

As a 20+ years Apple fan I still think this is unbelievably petty of Apple. The regular iPhone is still a premium device. And even if it wasn't, the same goes for the next gen SE. To limit it to USB-2 speeds is beyond me. Shameful really.

I think you're missing the big picture here. I take it as confirmation that the regular iPhone will be limited to USB-2 speeds. It won't help to upgrade the cable. That's the real issue in my opinion.

Love all these complaints.

  1. I'd wager about 98% of users haven't used a cable for data transfer in the last five year (other than CarPlay, which doesn't need that much data anyway).
  2. Of the 2% of users that have, 99% have done it so rarely, or so little data, that the slower speed is fine. Remember that this is as fast as the current Pro model goes.
  3. The 1% of the 2% of users are using it to transfer significant amounts of video. Those users aren't purchasing a non-Pro model anyway. If you're shooting that much video, you're buying the model with the better cameras, lenses, RAW, etc.
  4. Rumor is the Pro model has an additional chip to potentially support Thunderbolt, which means added cost. Why add more chips to a phone that isn't going to see any benefit since there are about five people in the world likely to use it on that model phone?
If we care about this, why doesn't Apple include the same processor, better case materials, higher quality screen, extra cameras, LiDAR, ProRAW, and larger storage options on the non-Pro phones? Because it's a non-Pro phone and there are differentiators that explain the price difference.

So looking at the cable the iPad Pro ships with, you would also incorrectly assume iPad Pro is limited to USB-2 speeds.

This is a charging cable, telling us nothing about the data transfer rate of the device.

The cables could be for USB-C iMac accessories rather than iPhone. This rumor confirms nothing.

USB-3 should not be a pro differentiator. USB-2 is an obsolete standard. It hasn't been used since antiquity and doesn't belong on a premium phone in 2023.

If it was only the cable I wouldn't jump to conclusions but there have been plenty of rumors about the regular iPhone being limited to USB-2 speeds. We'll know in less than a month. I hope it's not the case and if it's just the cable I actually don't think it's that big of a deal. Still a bit odd but not a huge deal.

Government agencies should not be in the business of designing technology.

It's a meme to everyone, who understands technical specs.

It definitely does not matter to casual user who most likely never uses iPhone's port for data transfer nowadays.
I think the funniest part about this is that the majority of android phones sold are still limited to 2.0 speeds.

I guess my Backbone controller for iPhone will be useless for new iPhones soon. What a PITA, that thing was not cheap and has no wireless function or power, relies entirely on Lightning port.
Given that apple to this day still sells a 30 pin to lightning adapter, I guarantee you they’ll have a USB-C to lightning adapter on day one.
Or, if they don’t, someone else will.

You must have a nice upload. I was transferring a several 10gb+ 4k video files a couple weeks ago and it would take ages to upload then redownload. I also needed to copy them to a Windows PC (that wasn't my own), so I would have to wait for them to sync to Mac, then copy them to the PC.

No thanks. I'll plug in.

Just like I said myself already in my previous post here https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...usb-2-0-transfer-speeds.2399491/post-32402860

Anyway, do you really want to compare budget Android phones from Chinese manufacturers with Apple Pro and Ultra devices, which should be state of the art and which are on totally different level price-wise? And if you want to compare to higher tier Android phone's - they have USB 3.1 already https://www.epey.co.uk/phone/usb-version/3-1-gen-1-usb-3-0/

So the joke's on you (and Apple, still)...

It’s not any different, this is just the Internet playing everyone’s favorite game of “Apple bad”.
Samsung removes the headphone jack? No big deal.
Apple does it? Huge deal literally covered on the mainstream news.
Apple removes the wall adapter from the box? They’re just being consumer hostile.
Samsung does it literally six months later? Oh it’s just the norm now.
Android phones promising 5 years of software updates? Oh that’s fantastic.
Apple gives the iPhone 7 six years of full software updates and several more of security updates? It’s not good enough.
Tons of android phones only getting above 2.0 USB speeds now? Meh, doesn’t really matter, no one uses it.
Apple (possibly but not even confirmed)restricts their main stream phone to the same 2.0 speed the bulk of all of the other cables and smart phones around are restricted to? They’re just being anti-consumer, I guess.
