first of all, we’re not. This entire articles about the standard 15 and 15+, both under $1000.
Well, in Europe it's 999 EUR for base iPhone 14, which is already over 1000 USD. And price increase is expected.

1000 USD is not budget phone, sorry. So apologizing USB 2.0 standard from year 2001 with "low price" just does not work here. It may work on ~200 USD budget Android phone. Not on 1000 USD premium iPhone (and yes, I consider every new iPhone, except for SE, to be premium phone - at least premium priced).

Nothing Phone 2: Type-C (reversible), USB 2.0, $599
OnePlus 11 5G: USB2.0, still ships with a C to A cable, $699
Yep, both for half the price of iPhone 14 - as stated above.

Also with your logic:
Huawei P30, 2019, ~250 USD, USB 3.1
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G: 399 USD, USB 3
Google Pixel 4, 2019, ~300USD, USB 3.1

I never said all Android phones have USB 3.1. I actually said quite the opposite right here https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...usb-2-0-transfer-speeds.2399491/post-32402860

Many cheaper Android phone already have USB 3.1. Why is this problem for iPhone with ~1000 USD pricepoint?

Do you have a source for the iPhone 15 going up $200? There were rumors about the Pro costing more.

even if apple increases their prices STILL will be a ripped off for consumers, not worth the money buying the iphone.....
Samsung on the other hand will offer much better deals....
Me as a loyal apple consumers im stopping buying apple products for now, specially an iphone.

The way things are going with Taiwan (yes I said it) and the CCP, might be no electronics for anyone except India. Hopefully the phone makers will be moving to Vietnam (can't believe I said it) sooner than later.

I am upgrading next year to the iPhone 16 Pro model, so this won't affect me much. But its disappointing Apple is now resorting to bifurcating the iPhone line up just to coerce users into spending more money. First the one year behind SoC on the standard/Plus models, now slower USB transfer speed, lower quality displays. I guess the reason why they are getting away with it is because most consumers who I see with the cheaper iPhone probably don't look into the finer details. You gotta admit too, there are a lot of Pro models in use out there.

What does the EU rule have to do with speed limitations imposed by penny pinching Apple, who clearly does no longer care about offering the best user experience? The ruling is simply about electronic waste (every device using the same cable) for charging.
The EU rule has now made the charging experience worse for the average iPhone user. The average iPhone user (not the new iPhone user) probably has 10 charging cables laying around in there house, or knows where they can grab one in there office, and typically doesn't need to grab one on the go(Its very rare I hear an iPhone user saying "I need a quick charge"). Now they get a new phone and have 1 cable and have to start buying all new cables for all their normal charging places, just for it to be phased out again in just a few years with a portliness phone. All the EU rule should have done was disallowed the manufacturing of ports older than USB-C, this would have allowed continued development of better USB-D connection with out new products being shipped with the crappy micro-USB connector.

Man some of you are really up in arms over this. I don't know a single person who uses the lightning port for data transfer. If you could plug your phone into any computer and have it show up like a flash drive with all your videos and images, this might be a different discussion. But as it stands, it's 2023 and iCloud is so integrated into the iPhone that the overwhelming majority use cloud and wireless transfer. The 1% who still solely rely on wired backups and transfer can use any extremely affordable USB-C data cable to speed things up going forward. This is such a non issue.

I hope that this is just stop-gap engineering and the longterm USB-C plan is to bring higher transfer speeds to the phones.

Don't like Apple's decision? Purchase a phone from Samsung, Motorola, Sanyo, etc., and find true happiness.

Easy.
People protest too much but at the same time, I don't think it is wrong to provide criticism. Apple went for the compliance solution rather than embracing an opportunity to improve wired transfers. It is a niche need but it is one the pro user market would appreciate. I'm surprised they didn't put a real USB3/4 controller on the pro phones. Maybe they did and the test units in this leak are the consumer grade 15.

And that's why people should vote with their wallets, find happiness, and most importantly send Apple a message. Sadly, hardly anyone will.

It's just empty noise and no action.

All iPhone 15 models this year are expected to adopt USB-C ports for the first time, and while USB-C has several advantages over Lightning, another rumor today suggests that Apple's standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are unlikely to enjoy any increase in data transfer speeds following the transition.

1.5m-usb-c-cable-iphone-15.jpeg

According to leaker Majin Bu, who has previously shared details about Apple's new cables, the USB-C cables supplied in iPhone 15 boxes are indeed limited to USB 2.0 data transfer speeds at a rate of 480 MBps, which is the same as Lightning.

In contrast, rumors converge on both iPhone 15 Pro models supporting higher USB-C transfer speeds. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 15 Pro models will support "at least" USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. For comparison, the iPad Pro features a Thunderbolt port for transfer speeds up to 40 Gbps, while the entry-level iPad’s USB-C port is limited to just 480 Mbps.

With the higher-specification data transfer speed, iPhone 15 Pro models will therefore be able to transfer video and other file types much more quickly than the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

Each iPhone 15 will include a braided USB-C charging cable in the box that is thicker (i.e. more durable) and 50% longer than the Lightning cable that comes with current iPhone models, according to reports. The cables are also rumored to be color-matched to possible new iPhone colors, coming in at least black, white, yellow, blue, and orange.

At this point apple is Trolling everyone. There can’t be but a few cent difference in the cable being 2.0-3.0 by this point. It’s almost as if they would have to go out of their way to make a slower less produced USB cable.
I was once an apple fan boy. But now I’m just someone who has escaped the walled garden apple described as Eden.
And well boys, it’s just fine across the wall. My $29.00 charging cable is USB C and 3.0

Apple will use the iPhone 14 Pro models processor in the iPhone 15 non pro models just like they did this year. The chip in my iPhone 14 Pro has No - None - Danada support for USB-C. So no surprise for next years non Pro models.

I have drawers full of white Apple power cables all the way back to 30 pin connectors. We still have a few vintage devices that still work.

I have 10Gb ethernet to USB-C 4 boxes. I plug one into my M2 11" iPad and get blazing speed downloads on my 1Gb cable service. Most web sites cannot transmit at that speed.

I can transfer files to my MacStudio rapidly using the 10Gb switch.

Time to stop bitching about rumors. In two and half weeks or so the real information will be available for all to see. There could even be new cables from Apple.

Who could have seen this EU-made disaster coming from a mile away? 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️

> EU mandates USB-C without specifying USB 3.0 minimum spec
> Apple ships billions of USB 2.0 cables with the box to keep costs down
> Users throw their USB-C 2.0 cables away when they realize these cables are slow, so instead of relying in AirDrop, they upgrade to an Anker USB3.0 cable
> Apple switches to portless phone several years later
> Users throw their USB3.0 cables away because portless iPhone is out and most of their other accessories are USB 4.1/5.0 with even better XYZ features

Meanwhile lightning hasn't changed one bit since ten years ago, did one thing really well: charge your iPhone, and there are billions of good functioning cables out there that didn't need to be thrown away before the portless iPhone.

Tell me again how this is a great idea for the environment.

As I predicted, big brain 5-head EU has absolutely no clue what they're doing. Thank them for the awfully annoying cookie popup on every single website too.

Thank you. The most reality based post in this thread. It's nice there are still a few in here that see it. ;)

I’m sorry but wireless transfer won’t beat a dedicated hardline for a good while to come. The bandwidth needed to transfer things via Bluetooth. A dedicated USB 3.0 cable will be faster and more capable for a long time.
A shielded cable will always beat an adhoc Bluetooth WiFi connection.
Every time. Until science can achieve a lossless wireless connection that’s able to declutter wireless interference a cable will ALWAYS win.

Seriously. Do you really think that more than 5% of the users are going to even know or care about this? Only the 5% of us who get it will end up getting faster USB-C connectivity with better cables. I do that with all of my camera equipment. The vendor supplied cables are never good enough.

Government agencies should not be in the business of designing technology.
They aren‘t designing anything. They just regulate the amount of scamming customers and taxing the environment that they tolerate, in the area that they are being held responsible for.
Try to find some sleep when you‘re an environmental minister and this Lightning and MFI crap is bring executed on your premises. You don‘t if you‘re true to your word or task of taking care of it.

Yeah exactly, and no limiting charging speeds. That would suck, as it would go against the whole point of switching to type c to begin with; MFI doesn’t currently exist on type c to type c cables so everyone would need to buy new ones, AS WELL AS chucking lightning cables
I could see the EU setting a fine for every cable thrown away. The EU doesn’t play around with this sort of thing. And it’s hilarious Apple assumes they can out play the 2nd largest governing body humanity has ever seen.

With all the drama over simply switching over to usb-c I wonder how Apple is going to handle switching over to user replaceable batteries in (I believe) 2027.
Going to be interesting.

What if the device literally can’t push a 3.0 connection. What if apple didn’t update the usb chip in the 15. These “ incremental “ iPhone updates feel more and more irrelevant every cycle.
While we have android phones literally evolving with every cycle we get the same thing every time with a “ tiny “ update for the same price ( or more it would seem ) every cycle.
An iPhone should have had usb 3 speeds in 2013-2014. Yet here we are. Paying Platinum prices for gold plated copper in a fancy stainless steel shell.

With this news I don't think I can even make it into work today. Heading for my safe space.

You all keep upping the requirements here. We went from shooting video to 4K video to 10GB+ 4K video files to 10GB+ 4K files on someone else's computer. :)

All I said is that I shoot more video than the average person, don't use cables for data transfer, and almost never have to wait for the videos to transfer. It works for me.

If you prefer to use cables in your workflow, good for you!

How long did the 10GB file take to upload to the cloud in your situation? At average 4G speeds, it should take around 60-90 minutes. Obviously much faster with wifi or 5G. Hardly "ages". But, of course, if you are in a bad service area this may not work for you.
Even with GB internet and WiFi in my house a 9.72gb video took 36 minutes. My WiFi caps out around 490ish mb per second in the house. My hardwired devices are getting the full 1GB.

But my sons Pixel 7 can usb to his computer and upload the 20gb files from his DJ Drone that are 4k and manage those transfers in a few minutes.
When you use these devices for professional uses Time sometimes is a big factor is completing your project.
My son does land surveying. And having information fast keeps him in business.
When a pixel 7 is taking a dump on my 14PM I’m kinda feel duped.

Depends on your use cases. For me (and I'd guess most people), syncing via the cloud is certainly faster and more convenient than taking the time to sync over a cable because it happens in the background.

I completely acknowledge that there are some people that create large amounts of media and need access to the files on their computer as quickly as possible. They would certainly benefit from cables some of the time. There are also some people that don't trust cloud services.

Don’t pat yourself on the back too hard. All I’ve seen from you on this topic are flimsy arguments that don’t hold up to light scrutiny. For example, I don’t know why you think people will replace usb 2 cables with usb 3 cables when it’s most likely going to be the iPhone chipset limiting the port to USB 2 speeds, not the cable. Getting a USB 3 cable won’t change that.

It’s also not the EUs fault that Apple didn’t transition 5+ years ago when they should have (when MacBooks transitioned). Any resulting ewaste problem resides on Apple’s lap for maintaining a proprietary standard longer than it made sense.

It also won’t be the EUs fault if Apple adopts a portless phone before the Qi2 standard is finalized (and magsafe possibly becomes obsolete).

In this case, the EU is only acting because companies like Apple haven’t, despite having ample time to do so.

If you are regularly transferring 20GB files that you need immediate access to, then wired is certainly the way to go. :)
