I don't understand the excitement about the USB-C cable question, whether USB 2.0 or USB-C Thunderbolt 3 data speed: How many iPhone users today do their data transmission via cable at all? And for the charging: How many do charging wirelessly? And even if you charge power by cable, I expect it will also be faster using a standard Thunderbolt 3 cable rather than the slower USB-C 2.0, as the former mentioned one already contains an MFI chip to make use of iPhone's higher performance...

Not everyone is excited about paying Apple for iCloud when we have perfectly good storage mediums in our computers. I’d probably drop iCloud if USB 3.1 gen 1 (at a minimum) was on the phone. Apple’s very excited about users paying for iCloud though…

While I agree it would be better for consumer to mandate at least 3.0 speeds at the same time it seems like rather unnecessary interference to the free market. It would definitely drive cost of the low tier phones up.

And most importantly. Everyone charges their phone, yet almost no one is using the port for data transfer. The point of the EU is not minor cases.

Sounds like usb-c mandate itself is interference of the free market. I absolutely agree.

Sure, let's put more conditions into regulations, but then don't argue how strict EU is or how are the regulations outdated and they should demand specification XY. They gave Apple freedom of choice and Apple autonomously decided to screw customers. Shame on them, not EU.
If you giving Apple freedom of choice of porte but then regulating it because you didn't like it, that's not freedom of choice.

I'm arguing it shouldn't have been regulated at all in the first place but if it did, do it in a way that's achieving the environmental purpose in the first place.

And that's why people should vote with their wallets, find happiness, and most importantly send Apple a message. Sadly, hardly anyone will.

It's just empty noise and no action.
Apple would rather people not vote with their wallets. No company actually wants that...thats why competent companies occasionally send out questionnaires to customers. I get them a few times a year for a variety of topic areas.

Furthermore, companies struggle to find out information about a lost customer...they're not your customer anymore. It is better for the company to have existing customers levy complaints.

Terrible.....Majin Bu?!?!?!

Come off it mate. How many people do you think use a cable to transfer data from their iphone?

1. Look at everyone complaining in the thread.
2. You're ignoring the aspect of the lifespan of a usb 2.0 cable which goes against the EU's intention for the mandate.

sorry but you're completely misunderstanding this.

The "slow" USB-C cables will continue to function as durable charging cables for the abundance of other USB-C devices within/outside the Apple ecosystem—something Lightning is woefully incapable of. In other words, virtually no e-waste produced. Nice try, though.
Except people would be throwing it away when they have a box full of usb-c cables of a mix and match of different speeds and power ratings.

Nice try though.

It's also not about the cables at all. It's about the ports on the devices. And those devices includes lots of stuff that doesn't even have data capabilities. Like flashlights.
You completely ignored what I said. 🤦‍♂️

Amazing 9 pages of comments for what?

A USB 2.0 cable?

Virtually all top-of-the-range smartphones are shipped with a USB 2.0 cable... all of them... what are we scandalized about?

The important thing will be to see if the entry-level iPhone 15 has the usb3.0 connector or higher.

But so far we have rumors and nothing certain.

The good thing is that the Pros will be the only ones on the market to have 40Gb/s of bandwidth.

Who could have seen this EU-made disaster coming from a mile away? 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️

> EU mandates USB-C without specifying USB 3.0 minimum spec
> Apple ships billions of USB 2.0 cables with the box to keep costs down
> Users throw their USB-C 2.0 cables away when they realize these cables are slow, so instead of relying in AirDrop, they upgrade to an Anker USB3.0 cable
> Apple switches to portless phone several years later
> Users throw their USB3.0 cables away because portless iPhone is out and most of their other accessories are USB 4.1/5.0 with even better XYZ features

Meanwhile lightning hasn't changed one bit since ten years ago, did one thing really well: charge your iPhone, and there are billions of good functioning cables out there that didn't need to be thrown away before the portless iPhone.

Tell me again how this is a great idea for the environment.

As I predicted, big brain 5-head EU has absolutely no clue what they're doing. Thank them for the awfully annoying cookie popup on every single website too.
EU citizen here. I care 99.9% about using one type of connector and 0.1% about the transfer speed. Thank you EU. While you're at it, can you limit the influx of American stuff into our soil? e.g. Fast food, soft drinks, pop music, huge cars, gun-filled Hollywood movies, wokeness, etc...

Which wouldn't have even been necessary if Apple had done the right thing in the first place.

Right thing to do was to keep lightning.
Half of your points are actually issues of Apple's making, the others are a consequence of Apple's actions. Yet you blame the EU?
Actually it's the consequence of EU's actions. This is quite similar to EU making a wish to the genie and genie carrying it out literally. Nice try.

Do you mean the base iPad? That's the only one that is 2.0.

Outside of that, none of them are.

iPad Pro - Thunderbolt 3 (USB 4) at 40 Gbps
iPad Air - USB 3.1g2 at 10 Gbps
iPad mini - USB 3.1g1 at 5 Gbps

Macbooks were the first device ever to use USB-C in 2015, and have always been at least Thunderbolt 3.
In 2015, Apple should had change lightning to usb-c on iPhone to unify connectors. But, it's Tim's cow.

As long as a cable can fast-charge a phone, it's perfectly fine for most people. This is probably why the EU has not specified a data transfer speed minimum. I'm sure they have done their homework and know that very few people would care for high data transfer speeds. I for one haven't used a cable to transfer data from/to my phone in years.
As more and more devices get faster data and charge wise, this cable becomes more of a nuisance as when they need a cable that can charge above 100w or need usb 3/4 speeds, they'll realize this cable is no longer necessary and get thrown out.

USB2.0 has a shorter lifetime compared to 3/4.

Not surprised, apple to me only moved to usb c due to the eu. They are not going to get any real money from usb c cables like they did with lightning. So if you want more speed you have to buy an apple thunderbolt cable for that.
Tim knows how to make money.

I’m sorry but wireless transfer won’t beat a dedicated hardline for a good while to come. The bandwidth needed to transfer things via Bluetooth. A dedicated USB 3.0 cable will be faster and more capable for a long time.
I can airdrop something faster when I arrive home than you can with with a cable. I tap a shortcut to begin airdrop via wifi7 before I get out of my car and will likely finish a medium sized file before you get home to plugin via cable.
