At this time last year, shipping and store pickup were pushed into October and beyond. I know this as I wanted to change from Black Titanium to Natural and couldn't do it at any storage size near my home, or my destination at the time of launch (Texas). This year, many configurations are still available in store.

I wonder if the October timeframe is a sign that sales have not been to the best compared to the years before.. it's 3 hours in and I expected we would hit November delivery dates by now.. Am I wrong previous iPhone sales slipped to November very quickly?

Yup, to me it's just artificial inventory tightening to make it look like high demand. This happens every year! With the current economic condition and layoffs, there's no way that many folks are willing to shell out money for upgrades.

I imagine Sith Lord Tim currently in his throne room surrounded by Pro Display XDRs looking at pre order numbers coming in and smiling gently.
Wrong, he's wearing his Apple Vision Pro really geeking out 🤣

I used to be a "gotta have the next iPhone no matter what" person since the beginning. That all changed once I realized the minimal upgrades between the phones from year to year wasn't worth me making payments to Apple. Yes, the payments are always 0% but still. That being that, I'm still sporting my 13 Pro Max which still looks and works like it was new. It feels nice knowing I'm keeping more of my money and giving Apple much less of it. lol

Could also be better supply since this is year 2 of the Ti frames, could be both.

Relax, there's no need to stress about this marketing tactic. Plenty of great phones are available. If you're using an iPhone 12 or newer, don't get caught up in the hype of a new iPhone launch - your current device is still excellent and can last a while longer. And if you're coming from Android, you're not missing out on much.
Telling people not get caught up in the hype while you’re in the comments of preorder thread on a fan site, is laughable. Sounds like you’re trying to convince yourself lol

I woke up at my usual 7:30AM (Mountian Time) and was able to order the model I wanted for launch day delivery, 16 Pro Natural Ti 256GB.

Impossible to make a conclusion like that without knowing supply constraints. Supply constraints were very notable in past years.

I ordered two Desert 16 Pro, 512 at 6:58 am Pacific. I'm told to expect both on Sept 20. So, yeah, perhaps some configurations, but certainly not all. 😀

Apple must’ve made a small amount of phones this year at launch. My store has had 2 preorders.

I decided use $1599+tax towards a new washer, dryer and a refrigerator set instead of buying a phone with a same exact main camera sensor.
That's almost always the wiser move if your current phone is only one and maybe even two years old.

What fascinates me about comments such as this is the lack of realization that your current phone is so good, still, that you simply don't need to upgrade. The fact that you aren't motivated shows how good Apple products are (as you say, but don't seem to realize.)

Hmm interesting. I wonder what causes the billions of dollars in sales each year if it’s all just artificial scarcity🤔

That's due to Tim Cook trickery. In his office closet at Space Park he keeps a few billion dollars in idle currency and just moves it around from here to there and back to here, to make it look like Apple is doing well. :)

Shhhh... You didn't hear that from me.
