I wouldn't trust the tech at the Genius Bar too much. Someone recently wrote that the tech couldn't (didn't know how) change the exposure time of a photo from 3s to longer in the camera. I don't deny that resets can be caused by hardware errors, but from what some people have written, after exchanging phones for new ones they still reset. It seems that the problem is quite common, so maybe Apple will look into it. I'll wait for the 18.1 update and see how the phone behaves then.

i agree 100% with you. Going through an exchange is not a good thing too me: my unit is ok, my screen is very good and the chances to have a bad / uneven screen are pretty high.

Not to mention the fact that the replacement phone would come in a white box, and whether it’s new or refurbished, we can’t know for sure. But the thought of having to replace my 20-day-old phone with a potentially refurbished one really pisses me off!

I'll just remind you about the problem with the iPhone 15 Pro and screen burn-in in some cases. People were sure at the time that the damage was hardware, but as it turned out, the iOS system was to blame, which was later patched and the burn-ins disappeared.

From what I remember, the iPhone 15 pro also reset itself at night while charging and this was fixed with an update.

True, I had forgotten about that memory.

I also sent detailed feedback to Apple, attaching the panic file. What worries me is that there’s no mention of this type of issue in the beta 7 changelog. By now, beta 7 should be the final version, with only the gold master remaining. If there’s no mention of the problem there either, we’re in trouble.

I've had one random restart on my 16 Pro Max. Surprised the hell out of me. I've had a few resprings among all the iPhones I've ever owned, but never an actual restart.

My 14 month pro max freezes and has springboard crashes. Not exclusive to the 16

My iPhone 16 Pro has never crashed. I used Quick Start to configure from my old iPhone.

The battery was draining pretty fast until I disabled Raise to Wake. Now it's great.

There’s no such thing as software without bugs, anywhere, and even with Jobs the advice here and everywhere used to be that if you wanted better stability always wait for at least the first point release of an OS
That presumed the software was feature complete at launch. That isn't the case here as Apple basically released Alpha software to the public. This version of iOS wont even be in beta state until sometime next year when its feature complete. Best advice is to stay on iOS 17 and sit this hot mess out. Not helpful I know for new buyers of iPhone 16 but could be implemented by Apple, but marketing would have a meltdown. Reality is this bug fest will continue for quite a while to come and iPhone 16 owners are saddled with it. All because Apple couldn't just say they won't be ready for AI for another twelve to eighteen months and taken the financial hit to their share price.

I had one time my phone went black in the middle of my work day and would not turn on for 20 secs, then a progress bar popped up and I figured it was restoring after a crash but it then said I had updated to the latest OS update. Scared the crap out of me and never had that just happen unplugged as I was working on the phone. Maybe it just doesn’t know my sleep hours well enough yet?

Which is the same excuse I keep giving FaceID that fails 25% of the time now whereas it worked perfectly, even when wearing a mask on my iPhone 15 pro.

Does FaceID still get better as you use it / adapt to changes in appearance? I have the alternate appearances etc set up and attention turned off but it’s basically only working if dead on.

My iPhone 11 has been doing this too.
Mine too.

And also my screen sometimes flickers/ flashes white when switching apps. And apps sometimes freeze/ aren’t responding to touch. For me it started with 18.0.1. Battery is fine though, much better than iOS 17.

The ONE advantage to having the latest hardware is that I can provide input on bugs and such. (My previous 11 Pro did everything I needed it to.) But I can say as a 16 Pro user, I have not experienced any of these issues!

My iPhone 16 Pro Max freezes if I am using the Messages app and I use an emoji, or reply to a specific text in the thread. My iPhone 12 was having its own issues, but I should have waited a few months for all this to iron out.

16 pro here, no probs, this was a fresh config, not restored from an iCloud Backup, so maybe that’s why

There appears to be a bug with some iPhone 16 models that is causing random restarts, according to complaints on Reddit, the MacRumors forums, and the Apple Support Communities. Affected users are seeing their iPhones freeze unexpectedly and then reboot.

Reports about the issue have been ongoing since the iPhone 16 models first launched in September, and have continued to this week. The iOS 18.0.1 and iOS 18.1 updates do not fix the issue, as it has continued to happen to users even after installing the latest software.

The problem seems to pop up randomly. The display will stop responding or will be very slow to respond to touch input, and then the iPhone will do a quick restart. There have also been reports of the iPhone restarting unexpectedly when in StandBy mode.

Some users who contacted Apple shortly after the new iPhones launched were able to get replacement devices, but have had the issue reoccur. Almost all of the complaints are about the iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max, so it may only be the Pro models that are impacted.

For most people, the issue is sporadic, but some users have seen 10 to 20 crashes per day. In some cases, doing a fresh install and not reinstalling from an iCloud Backup seems to have fixed the problem, so it is possible that this is a bug related to iCloud.

Let us know in the comments below if you've been experiencing this freezing and crashing issue.

A network reset and no more problems for me.

From a business and operations standpoint it’s pretty clear Apple are making a dogs dinner of developer relations which has a knock-on effect for their newer product initiatives. The AVP is on life support in terms of apps, the Apple Watch was a non-starter in that space. The litany of bugs and inconsistencies continues to creep higher. The shotgun approach to not create price umbrellas is leading down the well-worn path of 80s and early 90s Apple in terms of a confounding product matrix. Instead of transformative experiences it’s penny-ante feature drips. It’s all about maximizing shareholder value- which is great as long as the Venn diagram that includes shareholder value and CSAT overlap - which is increasingly NOT the case. Colleges will study Apple’s decline in freshman level business courses because for all the obvious signs Apple has institutional blinders on. Take privacy for example- when push comes to shove its a pure marketing angle when it gets in the way of shareholder value- and this happens most often where China is concerned. For all their attitudes Apple likes to gaslight folks with they are clearly fine with the human rights abuses and companies/regimes supporting said abuses as long as it make their production lines go brrrrrrr. So yeah patterns are everywhere. And Apple is doomed to repeat history because they didn’t learn from the past.
Protecting privacy is important, but I’m confused as to why, after so many iOS updates, we still don’t have options like “Only allow adding new photos” or “Allow access to photos without geotags” as default, selectable privacy settings for managing our photos.

Some apps automatically enable the “Only allow adding new photos” option, but users can’t set this as a default for all apps. It’s odd, really—is it that difficult to implement?

There is a user on Reddit who has a fix for restarting. You should reset the iPhone and log in with your Apple ID and start it as a new iPhone and download each app manually. Without restoring an iCloud or Mac/PC backup. After that, the iPhone should work normally without any restarts. Has anyone done this or tested it?

That is what I always do when I get a phone. Or major upgrade. And yup I have no issues.

I would like to test it to see if it works. The only thing that is important to me are my pictures in the gallery. I have quite a few. Do you know how I can at least get all my pictures back into the iPhone gallery if I set it up as a new iPhone without making a backup?

Yes, no problem at all. You get everything back like iMessage history, also app data etc. Setup as a new phone but still with the usual iCloud account.
