16 pro here, no probs, this was a fresh config, not restored from an iCloud Backup, so maybe that’s why
Zero crashes or problems on my 16 Pro. I transferred directly from my 13 Pro when setting it up.

I also don’t have battery drain issues. There is a minor bug with viewing a video from the photo app, but other than that, this has been an upgrade like any of my other ones over the past 10 years — smooth sailing.

I really like the iPhone 16 Pro. It’s by far my favorite iPhone so far. iOS 18 has also been great.

not sure if this is related. My iPhone 16 PM drops calls —incoming only, but every incoming call. To fix I have to do a hard reboot.

Apple needs to lay off these massive software and hardware updates every year. Each year it gets worse and worse. This year has been the worst cycle of software in Apples history. Bricked iPads and Apple Watches. Selling phones using commercials on features that aren’t even out yet and won’t be for months (Apple Intelligence). All of this reeks of desperation to keep shareholders happy while trying to hoodwink the public.

Its embarrassing and I think all of us should expect more from a 3 Trillion dollar company.

Or do them more often. And hire more software jockeys. And somehow compartmentalise the various functions modules so you can update incrementally, somehow. Like JUST camera…not a 3.6GB update.

There appears to be a bug with some iPhone 16 models that is causing random restarts, according to complaints on Reddit, the MacRumors forums, and the Apple Support Communities. Affected users are seeing their iPhones freeze unexpectedly and then reboot.

iphone-16-pro-colors-1.jpg

Reports about the issue have been ongoing since the iPhone 16 models first launched in September, and have continued to this week. The iOS 18.0.1 and iOS 18.1 updates do not fix the issue, as it has continued to happen to users even after installing the latest software.

The problem seems to pop up randomly. The display will stop responding or will be very slow to respond to touch input, and then the iPhone will do a quick restart. There have also been reports of the iPhone restarting unexpectedly when in StandBy mode.

Some users who contacted Apple shortly after the new iPhones launched were able to get replacement devices, but have had the issue reoccur. Almost all of the complaints are about the iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max, so it may only be the Pro models that are impacted.

For most people, the issue is sporadic, but some users have seen 10 to 20 crashes per day. In some cases, doing a fresh install and not reinstalling from an iCloud Backup seems to have fixed the problem, so it is possible that this is a bug related to iCloud.

The yearly release cycle needs to end. There isn’t any upside to it at this point. People paying top dollar for missing features and buggy software. Move to an 18 month cycle and arrive with a complete product.

16 Pro and yes, it’s like the RAM gets bogged down. SUPER slow to change apps, load websites, close apps, etc

camera will also go BLACK at times. I change lenses and back to 1x…BOOM, black lens. Like the lens is “closed” lol.

Also, many times phone conversations and the other person can’t hear me. On speaker or off speaker. It’s like my Phone App doesn’t have permissions to access the mic LOLZ. Terrible.

Now that I think about it I should really get a replacement device…

That presumed the software was feature complete at launch. That isn't the case here as Apple basically released Alpha software to the public. This version of iOS wont even be in beta state until sometime next year when its feature complete. Best advice is to stay on iOS 17 and sit this hot mess out. Not helpful I know for new buyers of iPhone 16 but could be implemented by Apple, but marketing would have a meltdown. Reality is this bug fest will continue for quite a while to come and iPhone 16 owners are saddled with it. All because Apple couldn't just say they won't be ready for AI for another twelve to eighteen months and taken the financial hit to their share price.

People experiencing 10 to 20 crash a day is quite an astonishing number of incidents.

Perhaps I missed it in the article, but was any follow up conducted for authenticity or is this merely a summary of some anonymous posts that were read on Reddit and Macrumors?

I’m in no way an Appleboi, but people do deliberately post lies and fantastic exaggerations on Reddit and MacRumor.

Yeah I’ve been on-board with that for years. They should update apps one by one. Not have to wait for bug fixes for months or even a year till the next major release. It’s stupid.

No freezing or crashing issue here on my 16 Pro and my husbands 16 Pro Max. We both restored our phones from older ones (me from a 15 Pro, my husband from a 12 pro Max).

10-20 crashes per day seems unbelievable to me. There must be a very very special setting or app bug to cause this.

I suspect that besides iOS 18 being very early in its release cycle, a lot of apps are buggy on iOS 18 as well on this iPhone.
Early should not be an excuse for poor quality. RTM means ready for public use. If it is not ready then call it beta or preview. No apps should be able to crash the OS no matter how poorly it is made. It should be all sandboxed and crash the app but the OS should not hang or blue screen. (edit: forgot a word)

Happened once. Had issues with AirPods also and battery on the Ultra since the updates, along with a massive issue with fitness that made a complete mess of things with Apples solution. Apple still refuse to acknowledge that software issues are riddled with bugs, after last year denying that the issues that magically appeared after updates were related. I’m hoping next year is better and devices are reliable again.

True, but this happens every year. It is what it is.

Definitely what I experienced. I did 5-6 reinstalls using an iCloud backup and still had the same issues. I tried on last reinstall before heading to the Apple Store, this time with a direct restoration from my old iPhone. This fixed the issue.

Apple’s industry-leading reboot time gets you to the lock screen 35% faster than comparable Android flagships which experience a full OS crash.

Beta means feature complete. iOS 18 is Alpha.
In regards to Apple Intelligence it would be in Alpha, but bugs and reliability are usually tested during beta. Features can be released in update cycles after the software is released, but bugs and reliability would issues would indicate that the software should still be in beta.

Its almost an every day occurrence with some type of respring. As soon as I open the camera app the entire phone malfunctions. Considering trying out the beta now
Matty, you have a defective camera module. I had my phone replaced. I made an appt with at the Genius Bar and swapped out the phone. Don't do the beta because they may attribute the behavior to that. When the camera app crashed, it must trigger a series of errors because after a while my phone would reboot. Poor quality control, Apple.

With this new phone, my phone no longer crashes when I open up the camera app or try to take a picture. However, I do have the intermittent freezing (although it has not rebooted) like the entire OS "stalls". I also have the wireless charging issue and the intermittent warming up issue. Very frustrating. I suspect it is software although I wonder if it also may be due to defective hardware if only some people are experiencing it. Of course, we all use our phones differently.

I am fearing what will happen with 18.1. Imagine making a more dramatic overhaul to the iOS on top of these more "fundamental" quality control issues.

I agree, the frequent camera crash brings nothing good to the system.

Did they replace the defective one with a new sealed iPhone?

It is too early for refurbished iPhones, which is why I would encourage people to do exchanges now if you are having problems.

It was actually running 18.0, so the first thing the phone had to do was upgrade to 18.0.1. I was initially hopeful 18.0.1 would have fixed the issue, but I rapidly found out that it did not.

So they gave you a white box phone?

I had a single reboot, with panic-full file. I did an online diagnostic and it went fine.

I’ve booked a genius bar appointment for the next week in order to have a deeper analysis.

I’m pretty confident it’s software related and with the next update Apple will release the “random reboot in some units” in the changelog note.

just happened to me a few hours ago. ran into a store with friends in the car and while i was in the store my phone resprung randomly.
