More so than the current ones with three lenses in a square? At least this new arrangement will be more stable on a table. I always find it interesting how many focus on how the phone looks. I respect that but it's not me so it always seems interesting. I think this new lens arrangement could be to facilitate "spatial" photos/videos.
sure, spatial video will improve, still, looks ugly - doesn't mean I won't get one ;)

An aluminium frame is a new feature - really?

I can see the torrent of endless ads next fall: "Check out my new iPhone 17 with tita---er, aluminum...."

(And AT&T will be out with another absolutely cringeworthy ad to promote the tita---er, aluminum somehow, no doubt.)

It’s way to early to say what’s coming - mean how it will look like, let’s chill out a bit and wait a few months more, and we will see

At a minimum they could copy what other phone makers do: foldable phones, more zoom, pens... They are loosing market share in China because other phone makers are innovating. Everything they have come up with in recent years have been copies of other phone makers: periscope lens, high pixel density cameras. Real innovation would be to think outside the box, which Apple did with the original iPhone, come up with things we didn't imagine.
You seem to think that just because other phone manufacturers have those features, they're innovation. I mean, a pen for a phone? Really? You have 5 of those on each hand. Secondly, why are you writing on a screen that small?

If the aluminum on the Pros ends up being true I wonder how Apple will spin it as an "upgrade" using Aluminum on the Pros after 6 years of stainless steel and 2 years of Titanium.
I don't know, but aluminum is lighter and has better heat dissipation. The only functional advantage of SS and Ti over aluminum is rigidity, but I don't hear about base iPhones bending--but I do hear a ton about iPhone Pros being too heavy. I don't think Apple should have ever strayed from aluminum for any iPhone. I think the decision was mostly to have an arbitrary differentiator for the premium phones.

That 12GB of RAM will probably be necessary for Apple Intelligence 2.0 or AI Pro which we might get as soon as next year. Another reason to skip the 16 Pro/16 Pro Max.
Yep my thinking too.

The 16 series was a rushed last minute adjustment in ram, I believe 8gb ram will not be enough very soon and Apple will go up to 12 or 16gb in the next models.

Given the current AI wont even be completed for another 6+ months , it made it easy to skip an upgrade as my old 12 Pro Max still works fine.

OK Apple, I am older than all of you. I LOVE Apple, it helped me make $, it made my life better, it allowed me to stop carrying a DSLR. Apple is genius. No negs. Being a fan of Apple is like being a fan of a high-performance car. I started developing software when the Apple two was released. It was a computer for those of us who had learned disabilities those of us who didn't understand the PC. Those of us wanted a trashcan icon those of us who wanted to be able to find our files when we saved them. Apple was genius and now they continue this absolutely astonishing company.

Just another incarnation of nothing, with a price jacked up another 50 or 100 bucks or more. More RAM, new cameras... big deal.
Seriously, when are people going to come to their senses and realize that a $1200 (or $1400!) "phone" is outrageous?
In before the apologists, blaming COVID/supply chain and inflation.

When there will be smartphones again and not a smartphone built around a camera?

In my use-case an iPhone 4-6 camera would be enough for the rare cases I need it.

But it's always about the camera getting better and better and bigger and bigger and it's one of the most expensive parts even in cheap Android phones.

And I also absolutely NEVER need a front camera.

😐

My immediate thought was how "aged" the aluminium Watches look compared to the stainless steel ones.
What are Apple thinking? Too easily dented, too soft. I struggle to believe this rumour because of that.
If true the only consolation has to be that nearly everyone wraps them in rubber covers so the material is irrelevant.

And iOS will still fail against '90s cell phones and '80s answering machines by not providing audible NOTIFICATIONS OF MISSED CALLS.
Hmmm. I'm not sure I'd find such a notification helpful. When I get the call in the first place I have an audible (or vibrate) notification. If I missed that (noisy place) then I would also miss any audible reminders of the call until somewhere quiet. When I did go somewhere quiet I would likely look at my phone if just for a second to see if there were ANY notifications and would see the missed call.

With phone cameras and especially with this horizontal layout, I’d like Apple to make something groundbreaking - perfectly square camera sensors. Then the software can non-destructively crop the aspect ratio portrait or landscape afterwards.

That way with this aspect ratio users can take spatial videos (and any videos for that matter) and not worry about Vertical Video Syndrome. It’ll also make huge file sizes so Apple can sell you more iCloud storage. ;)

Lighter weight would be an upgrade for some of us. As for Apple’s possible spin, they could say it’s some new “advanced” aluminum hybrid frame?
We took aluminum and have transformed it into.........aluminium!!!! We think you are going to love it!

Hmm. Maybe I need to sign a document when I'm not carrying an ipad? Why not have the option?

Wouldn't this be three generations already on 3 nm? It's time for 1.5 nm.

Kudos on the RAM increase, Apple!

16 GB would've been great, but 12 GB will have to do for now.
