More so than the current ones with three lenses in a square? At least this new arrangement will be more stable on a table. I always find it interesting how many focus on how the phone looks. I respect that but it's not me so it always seems interesting. I think this new lens arrangement could be to facilitate "spatial" photos/videos.
I agree.
Assuming the main wide angle lens is in the center, that may enable spatial video recording at 2x zoom if they go back to a ~50mm (2x) equivalent focal length for the telephoto camera. Not sure if they would do that after bumping it to a 5x telephoto over the last 2 years though.

The 48MP telephoto lens would be able to mimic a 10x lens. A stylus isn’t necessary and goes against the entire original purpose of the iPhone and they’ve had 2000 nit screens for three years now which looks awesome outdoors.
1) A stylus is much desired by the many of us who draw.
2) Referencing "the entire original purpose of the iPhone" is just silly, even absurd. The original iPhones did not have the great cameras, LiDAR or bandwidth that we have today that allow capturing large image files that scream for stylus markup capabilities. Nor did the original iPhones have anything even remotely similar to the screen tech available that we have today.

Renders are so hideous. But I don’t blame people who made them since iPhone will probably look 90% like on this render

Don't spatial photos/videos require the lenses to be separated horizontally (like your eyes) when taking photos and videos?
Yes, for landscape mode photos and videos, which is what Apple has been promoting for use with the Vision Pro. Hopefully Apple hasn't bowed to TikTok and decided to deprecate landscape mode in favor of portrait mode. I doubt if this render has any basis in reality.

If Apple wants spatial imagery for both landscape and portrait mode, it could stick with three lenses, but just space them out further from each other than they currently are--one in the upper left corner, one about about 1.5 inches below that, and the third about 1.5 inches to the right of the corner lens. This spacing would work for the width of both the Pro and Pro Max models, and would come closer to the average adult's interpupillary distance (IPD!) of about 2.5 inches than the skimpy 3/4 inch of the current models. For the regular iPhone and Plus models, with just two lenses, at least this spacing of about 1.5 inches would achieve a better stereoscopic effect for landscape mode. Apple could upsell the Pro and Pro Max by pointing out that they can do spatial in both landscape AND portrait mode.

Or, if Apple is satisfied with continuing to give us stereoscopic lenses just 3/4 inch apart, just move the currently rightmost lens up so it's in-line with the corner camera lens, and over to the right a bit to get the skimpy 3/4 inch faux IPD distance.

I absolutely adore these "roumors" about new Apple devices, how can you not love to speculate , if next iPhone is going to have a processor chip, that is one number larger in the naming, than last years processor chip. OR will camera features will be .01% better than last phone, or this will be first iPhone ever, where camera features gets objectively worse. Can't forget the "new design", that is 1:1 as last design, but radius in one corner is 1% rounder than last year.
Truly exiting times to be alive :D
Apple TBH is such a hostage of market, where every large company releases new devices multiple times a year and everyone is afraid to skip a year, as they will be totally forgotten, and not profit multiple billions but at the same time, no meaningful relesaes comes out anyway

Rendered images are terrible. The upgrade list is pitiful.
If it does actually look anything like that when released I'll be sticking to my 15 Pro Max for as long as I can!

You're right, but I don't think it's really their "approach". They really can't do any better. This is all they've got.
these phones are mature - there is just some incremental improvement to the overall package each year

strangely enough titanium bikes are lighter than steel and aluminum - so why Apple can't make that happen
The iPhone 15 and 16 Pro and Pro Max have frames made of titanium. The "lesser" models in each series are aluminum and its variant, aluminium, which has an extra ion.

Going back to aluminum?

Anyway, for what it’s worth - aluminum frame and Pixel array will probably be the least of our worries next year…

I think the next more revolutionary step will be something related to a phone paired with smart glasses when done right so that it's great AR while not standing out as much more than a pair of sunglasses. Meanwhile what keeps me with Apple products is the ecosystem. I really like my mac compared to a Windows PC and so I really like how the phone fits well with the mac. I'll see some cool features on an Android phone now and then and maybe hope a bit Apple does something like that but those features are never enough to offset the clean ecosystem Apple has. Nothing is perfect.
Smart glasses are another product segment altogether, which is, in practicality, still a ways away. True passthrough tech is probably 4-5 years away and then you need to figure out how to increase the FOV and radically increase processing capacity while keeping the weight down. It will not be until well into next decade before a mass market product for AR/VR is out for consumers.

Dear Santa,
Amendment to my Christmas wish list for next year…… Uncle Timmy went to work and he cannot or maybe that should read ‘Will Not’ let me have an iPhone 17 Pro Max that delivers a significant update.
Instead can I have a large packet of crisps (chips to our overseas friends) as I will get more enjoyment out of the crisps…

Also, whilst I am here can you please ask Rudolph to stop stamping his hoofs on my roof. I know he has cramp from all that flying but it keeps me awake.

Thank You.
Love from Beards x

That camera bump most likely ist going to be vertical and not horizontal. Otherwise the phone won't be able to do spatial video recording.
(Yes, it would, but only in portrait and that's nothing anybody would want.)

When are we gonna get a 10x telephoto lens like Galaxy had had for ages now? Or a stylus? Or a screen that looks good outdoors? Innovation seems to have stopped at Apple awhile ago now.
A stylus? That’s not innovation that’s something to lose.

And the iPhone screen looks great outdoors.

Innovation is alive and well at Apple, hence things like the M4 instead of useless things like styluses and folding phones. That’s not innovation that’s gimmicks.
