Wait, this doesn't cover the Plateau either! Does it need to be covered? I though the aluminum was getting scratches? Or is it the Ceramic Shield on the back?
I have the clear ESR case from Amazon, it covers the plateau. I wouldn’t want it exposed.

The last time they did a "shiny anodized" finish on an iPhone was the iPhone 7 Jet Black and we saw many, many complaints about how easily those scratched. They did bring the finish color back to Apple Watch 10, but I still see some durability complaints about that one (though personally I think the finish is much improved on the watch).

When I did an iPhone-to-iPhone transfer, I did get an estimate in minutes for how long the transfer was supposed to take.
It seems there are still durability complaints about this finish so I would have just embraced it and followed suit with the 17 series. People will complain either way. I rather liked the jet black finish on the 7 although I did not own it at the time, I had the gold. It would be much preferable to what we got now.

Say what you will about the iPhone 14 PM being the heaviest iPhone ever but but the shiny stainless steel band around the phone felt fantastic, and 3 years later it still looks like brand new. That was an appropriate choice for a premium device.

The iPhone to iPhone transfer is a bold choice as then you are out of commission on both phones for an extended period of time. When transferring from PC, even though it takes several hours to get the data into the new device, the old one is still freely available for use. Taking away the progress indicator is cruel though. Wonder why they implement it for one transfer method and not the other.

I like the feel of my 17 PM. Although I really don’t care if it’s aluminum. Everyone is treating as if this is Apple’s first time using aluminum in their phones and surprised how cheap it feels. Or how easily it scratches.

It’s just a tool that’s meant to be used — not like it’s some precious jewelry.

Everyone is aware that apple used aluminum in the past but we liked the change to titanium and hate to go back to something of lesser quality. not everyone covers their phones in a case.

Yes phones are a tool. Jewelry is not lol so that comparison doesn’t make much sense imo.

You prefer to use a hammer made of low grade forged steel? Or high carbon?

I understand that you would ideally like Apple to produce a product using titanium, but the company has to consider more than just what is tough and visually appealing. A high-powered phone produces heat that must be dissipated. Had they gone with a phone without the new cooling, I've little doubt that we would now be showered with posts about how much heat the phone produces. Perhaps you would be one complaining about it.

So, what is it you want from the world's most high-powered phone? High heat and the best look, or lower heat and a less fancy look?

Wife and I went by the Apple Store yesterday just to experience these in person. The Air is not the way to go - too much of a camera downgrade. I really wish the base iPhone 17 received a physical design update; it is overshadowed by the other two models this year. As for the Pro, my wife is sold on orange, where as I’ll stick with silver since I use a case anyway.

My wife will definitely get the smaller pro. I might as well, for pocketability reasons. The Pro Max would push me into an EDC bag.

BTW if anyone is wondering why the Pro colors are orange and blue, remember that Tim Cook went to Auburn University. They are fanatical about their school colors!

I know it's been getting bashed for being ugly, but I am loving the orange Pro Max. The orange anodized aluminum looks great. The glass is more of a mango or marigold color, and I do wish it was all one color instead of two-toned, but I'm ok with it. I will say it looks far better in person than it does in some photos. Some of the photos of the orange Pro I've seen I'm wondering wtf people's cameras are doing to that color because some of the shots look nothing like it does in hand.

I've been going with the smaller Pro devices the past several years but decided to go back to the larger screen this time. It's surprisingly manageable to use one-handed and I'm enjoying the larger screen and the fact that it's a bit easier to type on. My near vision gets worse as I get older so this bigger phone is easier on my eyes too. The smaller phones are obviously more pocketable but I think I'll manage just fine with the bigger phone.

I received my 17 PM on launch day. Coming from a 12 PM, I really like the bright display and 4x (compared to 2.5x) camera. Additionally, the image processing on the 17 PM looks more natural. In comparison, the 12 PM images look a bit over sharpened.

As a photography, whenever I purchase new camera gear, including iPhones, I always test the cameras. The main thing is to test for decentered lenses. Simply take a photo of distant objects, then rotate the iPhone 180° and take the same photo again. Image sharpness should be pretty close when comparing the sides and corners of the photo. There will always been some variation though.

Unfortunately, the main camera (1x) on my 17 PM is noticeably less sharp on one side of the photo. The wide and tele are both great. I’ll be sending this back to Apple and waiting 3-4 weeks for a new one now that shipping times have slipped.

This is definitely frustrating. I had to try multiple iPhone X copies to get a good one, but my 12 PM had three great cameras on the first try. I was hoping these manufacturing variations were behind us, but apparently not.

True! This plus I'm struggling to like iOS 26.

We used to have premium materials, square edges, flat design OS -- this time around, it feels like they went quasi-retro with a match up of a lot of different ideas that don't fit well together.
I actually do like iOS 26 so far.

Love my orange Pro Max!

I wonder if iPhone should move forward with three categories - base model, pro and luxury. The latter two are not the same thing.
I'm loving mine too! The Cosmic Orange color looks great in person. Usually I would go with gold if there was an option in the past, but this new bold orange color is a nice change of pace for the Pro colors. The one thing I wish they would have done a little different is the color and contrast of the glass MagSafe area on the back of the phone. It does look like something is there that needs to be peeled off. Mine always has a case and/or MagSafe wallet covering it so not really a big deal to me.

I got the orange PM.
it’s ugly and looks super cheap, but the battery is epic. I’m restricting battery to 85% and not using wired CarPlay (that’s proven to nuke batteries and cook phones).
Cameras are good; 8x will be handy; landscape selfie is being overhyped; weight feels similar to 15 PM.
what about wireless chargers in the car? are they safe?

Wait, what? You have a source for that hot take?
The Pro Max is really heavy!!! Coming from a 15PM which feels like an air next to this.
I had a 16 Pro Max before this and I can't feel the weight difference. I thought I would, but nah

I got my new phone from the store in the afternoon but didn't open it until late evening. So I just set the phone-to-phone transfer to start and went and watched TV for a while until it finished. I used a Thunderbolt cable and the transfer speeds were pretty good.

8.22oz vs 7.80oz. That's a 5% increase in weight. I doubt it's all that noticeable. I'm likely making that same change in the next few weeks though, so I'll be anxious to see what it feels like.

Amazing how some of you will eat up ANYTHING a company tells you.

These phones never had overheating issues lol. My iPhone 8 used to run hotter than my 15 does lol. Some users reported overheating phones and it was deemed a software issue. Again, since ios17 the 15,16 have not been overheating enough to call it a widespread issue that requires going back to old materials used lol. I can’t stop laughing at how you think these products don’t under go the most vigorous stress testing before they’re released to the public. Let’s play a game sort these in order from least to most expensive unit

Titanium frames
Aluminum frames
Vapor chamber

I'm guessing you weigh more than a few pounds though.
lol 🤦🏻‍♂️

I’m not saying a phone and a person are equally affected by 5% more weight, I’m saying that when you’re intimately familiar with how something feels, a 5% change can be noticeable whether it’s your body or your phone

For a very short period of time, sure. You hold your phone a lot throughout the day. You'll get used to it within hours.

I had the air and then fit this PM. I think it’s a great phone! Love using it case less with its nice round edges. Love the semi anti reflective. And camera
