iPhone no longer dead!!! Hurrah!!

Posted earlier to say that my upgrade to the new firmware did not go very well at all. Been stuck with the connect to iTunes logo on screen and when I tried to do a restore, kept getting "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. Error 20".

Last two hours have been thinking my iPhone was done forever... Then I tried once more. Downloaded the firmware again and then held down the command key (shift for windows users) when I clicked on Restore. It allowed me then to choose the iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw file that I downloaded. This time it all worked fine and I now have App store.

Very happy here, hope this helps anyone else who also got stuck.

Right, I'm off to go download and play Super Monkey Ball!!

You would think with all of this going on that they'd just release the firmware.

I have a question...I am at work - I can do the update here...I don't care if I lose my music and I have MOST of my pictures backed up...but will the backup it does include all of my phonebooks and all that?

What if I sync my phone here first...can I sync all of my stuff to 2 computers like that?

Or I could just wait 5 hours...or can I.....haha

Your phonebook and stuff should be on address book on your machine from the last time you sync'd.

I wonder when the official 2.0 firmware will be released. I figured that it would come along with the App Store access, but it looks like that isn't really official access either.

I'm going to wait it out a few more hours and see what comes along. Otherwise, I'll download 5A347 before I head out to work. For now, I'm happy downloading all of the cool free Apps that are out there.

Netter's Anatomy for $39.99 is reasonable. That should come in handy at work.

Where's the Nike+ App? I read about it on the main page, but it isn't in the store yet.

And too bad Rolando isn't available yet. That's the game I want!

There is official access to the App Store...go to itunes store, then click on App Store on the left (where movies and TV shows are etc)

Screenshot in new Firmware

I haven't seen this posted anywhere, but maybe I missed in the almost 600 posts!
You can take a screenshot of any screen on the iPhone by briefly holding the top button and the home button. The screen "blinks" for a second and then the image shows up in your camera roll.

Nice for documenting how to setup something!

WTF.

I just followed the instructions but no prompt to backup.

It just started installing. By which time I was too scared to pull the plug incase it bricked my iPhone.

Process almost complete. I've just lost everything on my phone. Most importantly all my contacts :(

I was not given the option to backup either. The update zapped everything but my settings.

Luckily I didn't lose much more than some topless photos of Keeley Hazell, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who can't afford to have their iPhone wiped clean.

can somebody confirm that if you have an unlock iphone upgrading to 2.0 still keep

it unlock?

somebody said that the ipwnage still works...

I have tried everything and I still getting this error. Hmm..I guess I'll just have to wait for the official update.

I got that as well. You need to make sure your using ITunes 7.7. After i updated itunes it worked.

Bricked iPhone?

I'm getting the same error message others are. "iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred(20).

Please help. Any ideas. I have tried all I know to try.

yes i'm crying

Error 2001 - solved

I was running WinXP via Parallels which was causing the problem. I shut down windows and retried. Everything worked great, I have downloaded Loopt and several other apps Very Cool so far.

question for the people that have 2.0 on and working...

how long did the 'preparing iphone for software update' step take? while you had the spinning wheel thing on the iphone screen. mine has been there for about 3 minutes.

I couldn't wait to get home so I installed iTunes on my Vista computer at work. Update went pretty quick and did NOT offer to back up my data. So, my iphone is now erased but has the new software. Oh well, at least all my stuff is on my Mac at home. Downloaded MotoRacer and wow! I had no idea the iPhone could have such a cool game on it.

I did the same thing. Installed iPhone 2 from my mac at work and thought that it would back-up and restore for me... all my text messages and notes are on my macbook at home, do you think I'll be able to restore and get them all back? I'd hate to hit "Restore" and some issue with restoring settings from version 1 to a version 2 phone screw it all up...

Phew!

Halle-frickin-lujah!

To all those who are having problems with this I may have something to brighten your moods. After multiple restarts of iTunes and iPhone and reboots I’ve finally got somewhere.

I made a back up of my backup first (/Users/username/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup) just in case and then redownloaded the software using Firefox (actually Minefield if you want to be picky).

I then held the option key down while clicking the ‘Restore’ button and chose the new iPhone 2.0 software.

I’ve restored from a backup of earlier today and now have apps installed!

Not until tomorrow. Apple is a smart marketing company, and as much as I hate the cynical manipulation of it, the fact remains that they will sell more iPhone 3g's if they don't give iPhone 1 owners a chance to second-guess their purchasing decision by seeing that the new firmware gives them most of what a new phone would bring.

If the average iPhone 1 user were to update today, they would see the App store, push email, and all of the other enhancements, and quickly realize that maybe they don't need 3G or GPS, the only real enhancements to the new phone. They might then cancel their plans to line-up tomorrow.

Obviously it's difficult for Apple to conduct a world-wide launch of not only the phone, but also the App Store, MobileMe, and supporting services without a few things leaking out; which is why we have this premature download.

I will install it tonight, because it may just change my plans for tomorrow one way or the other.

I did the update about an hour ago on my MBP. It took about 15-20 total and all went well. I upgraded to iTunes. 7.7 first of course. I have already d/led a couple apps including MLB At Bat. Pretty cool stuff.
