Just sign in with your iTunes account name and password - from what I've read this works and bypasses any activation process.

Yep, this worked for me, much to my surprise and subsequent joy at having 2.0 working without any problems whatsoever!

I'm running an unlocked and jailbroken phone, but using an O2 PAYG SIM.
Obviously it's now not jailbroken and possibly not unlocked anymore, but it looks like for anyone in the UK using an O2 SIM, contract or otherwise, you're good to go and enjoy!

Just to clarify - this isn't true. I'm on an O2 SIM (not O2 'iPhone' SIM) and I can't activate firmware 2.0. It tells me my SIM card is not supported.

I also can't downgrade to 1.1.4 either, now. The 2.0 to 1.1.4 downgrade steps here:

http://sleepers.net/news/?page_id=216

don't work. I get error 1604 when trying to restore back to 1.1.4.

I think I'm stuck until the 2.0 activate/jailbreak is released.

Update: I've called O2, and they told me that I need a 'blank SIM' from an O2 or Carphone Warehouse store. When I put that in, the phone will be activated, and all will be well. I'm going to give this a go this afternoon.

It is now 5 AM EST and 3 AM PST, still no official update.

Not good enough.

With the MobileMe outage this whole thing has been a fiasco. What kind of moron puts up the app store and then won't put up the software so people can use the apps?

You'd think the monkey from Super Monkey Ball was organizing this rubbish.

I was expecting better from Jobs. You have to take care of your current customers if you want to get a reliable base, and this isn't the way. I was really expecting it at midnight EST. That didn't pan out so i waited for midnight PST. Nothing. Now I am waiting for 8 EST 2 hours 45 minutes away. It better be there.

Time of Release

If the update for iPhone & iPod touch is delayed beyond July 11th, there's a good chance I'm going to explode. Hopefully the live countdown on the Macrumors home page is also the countdown to the iPhone Software Update 2.0 for iPhone EDGE/iPod touch. C'mon Apple, we're counting on you.
:apple:

Why 8EST? Other than the fact that time has passed? The real deadline should be 8PST. 3G launch. If people buying the 3G are the only 2.0 userbase, that would be a crock of crap. And to pile it on, MobileMe won't be up and running at that time, either.

Apple has illusions of grandeur. Not even Microsoft tries to release multiple products within a 24-hour period.

Yes it is true, as O2 (and Apple) now support first gen iPhones using O2 PAYG SIM cards.

See here at O2's website

Your problem is probably due to the method you used to hack your phone.

Just to clarify (and I'll edit the post you quoted to reflect this), O2 have told me I need to get a 'blank SIM' to use this iPhone on my O2 contract. There is some problem with the SIM I have, apparently.

I wouldn't have thought it has to do with the hack method - everything would have been upgraded to firmware 2.0 when I did the update.

Thanks for clarifying.

A walking time bomb! Almost makes me want to see what will happen when Apple releases at noon.

I've been patiently checking iTunes 7.7 since yesterday morning for the update, but if it isn't up in 30 minutes, then I have to go to work for the day. 8AM or 6PM is effectively the same thing for me.

Clearly it would be nice to have the software today, but there are a variety of reasons why that might not happen. None of them are particularly good, but they aren't out of the realm of reality.

I'll clarify even more ;)

O2 now officially support O2 PAYG on the first gen iPhone.

Also, they now do an unlimited Internet and Wi-Fi bolt-on for £10 a month for iPhone owners, which comes out of your top-up balance. No contract, and you can start and stop it every month as you please.

This is brilliant news.

It's all working now - Me sync, the lot.

I have deleted the (work) Exchange account I previously created - although it worked fine (and first time, amazingly!) it somehow managed to stop my (work) Blackberry from receiving emails.

Thing is, I like to have my (work) calendar also up to date on my iPhone, so I have Entourage on my iMac receiving my calendar from the Exchange server via OWA, that syncing to iCal, iCal syncing to Me, and Me syncing to my iPhone.

What a carry-on, but it does work. :)

Anyone know if you can number-port PAYG numbers? Currently on 3 PAYG, but I'm planning on taking a friend's 1G iPhone once he gets his upgrade - don't want to switch numbers though, as I've got a good easy-to-remember one...

Yes, you can :D

I've got iTunes upgraded to 7.7 and my iPhone to 2.0 Everything works except I can't sync programs from iTunes to my iPhone. So, I used the applications downloader in my iPhone to successfully download several programs such as ePocrates, iTunes Remote and AIM. All of which work flawlessly. iTunes remote is the best. Now with AIM, I may have to cancel my extra texting plan too offset the $15 plan increase because as it stands, most of my texts get used up from people contacting my phone through AIM.

Here's the catch, now it says I have programs in my iPhone which aren't present in my iTunes library. Would I like to sync? Click yes and I get an error saying "'Program X' cannot be transferred to the iTunes library because you are not authorized to play them on this computer."

Is it because I have a full functioning "hackintosh" instead of a "real" mac. I don't know. Either way, I'm pretty happy with 2.0 Its got the contact search feature, multiple email delete, etc...

I hope with the "official" 2.0 build, everything works fine.

Henry

It takes a lot of discipline, planning and execution to pull off a 24 hour release. It has nothing to do with grandeur. Maybe that's why MS can't pull it off. They can't even release an OS within the projected year...

Works Fine

I applied this yesterday to both my iPhones. I have iTunes 7.7 installed. I can sync apps from iTunes or from the iPhone. The snapshot feature is nice. The only thing I did notice was in Calendar. The colors didn't match from iCal for the multiple calendars in the iPhone. Otherwise, everything else works great.

Are you using a "real mac"? I still can't figure out why syncing apps to and from my iPhone won't work.

NO 2.0 on itunes yet still

Was hoping it would be released at 12pm GMT but still nadda :(

aghh how frustrating having the apps downloaded, i can't sync them to my iphone v1 (

Apple have just updated their webpage on the software update and removed the "coming soon" and "free in the next update" segments in the last 5 minutes.....i'd expect an imminent arrival!:)

http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

Oooh....gimme gimme gimme!

The iPod Touch page also offers a link to buy the software now....but it doesn't do anything!
