of all the potential updates listed for this release i'm just looking forward to the podcast download function. other than that, i just want the typical things most smart phone users expect that apple refuses to deliver. *sigh*:(

I've only had my iPhone for a few weeks and I have a love hate relationship with it.

On the plus side it looks great and the ui is fantastic but its the first phone I've owned in 8 years that can't even forward a SMS!!!!!!!!

It is the ONLY camera phone I've owned that can't send or receive a MMS

Its the ONLY smart phone I've owned that can't copy and paste

sure the iPhone has loads of stunning features but in my mind it misses some of the basic phone features

Wait till next week.... Then we all get to start the fight over again. Besides, instead of focusing on what the phone does not do, enjoy everything it does do!

I am kinda amazed that Apple might be adding new software features that most people DON'T CARE ABOUT, yet the fundamental features already found on most other smartphones that people have requested from DAY ONE are still sorely lacking:

_ Cut&Paste (come on the Mac128k had this feature)
_ Double click to select a word
_ Video recording
_ Global Search
_ Bluetooth enabled keyboards
_ Bluetooth syncing
_ Bluetooth music listening
_ Horizontal text input in all applications
_ Sync notes and to dos
_ Ability to sync documents and edit them
_ Flash
_ Laptop tethering
_ Streamlined email reading between accounts
_ Push notification
_ Back up all application data on phone
_ A Finder that allows for categories
_ Turn by Turn navigation (ala TomTom)
_ ITunes Store via 3G
_ VOICE DIALING !!!

my safari never crashes... Ever... Is it really a big problem for a lot of you?
Yes it is a huge problem. Strangely I don't have a lot of third pArty software installed either. I sometimes think the problem is related E-Mail push.

In any event way to many crashes. Everything else is fairly stable though.

And I Agree with the post saying his original iPhone was his best purchase ever. Same here... It's really exceeded expectations, an I expected a lot.

I certainly like my iPhone. It is just that the core needs lots of improvements. Safari is number one but there are bugs else where.

Dave

well, I'm not gonna say you're wrong... This is just the first I've heard of it, and I'm an early adopter who has never had this problem... And I use safari a lot!

Beyond that, my phone is really stable in general, and I have about 3 pages of apps installed. I guess I'm just lucky.

Not to get embroiled in this argument or anything, but Microsoft didn't have any trouble implementing system-wide copy and paste into their newly announced Blackberry Storm.
So whats so hard with Apple and the iPhone?

Actually Microsoft is having next to impossible troubles implementing anything into the Blackberry Storm. Mostly because RIM is the one that implements anything to Blackberry devices, since RIM is the one that makes the devices, not Microsoft :)

When I installed Google Earth, I was wondering what was happening.
I had not realised that I had maxxed out the apps.
I am not finding any stability problems, I update a couple of times a week and switch my phone off every couple of days and all seems ok.
Are we discussing issues with people who have unlocked phones??

yah, how about????

In order:
Copy/Paste
Tethering
Picture MMS
"Update All" Apps button
Forward Contact from phone to an email
Ability for some background apps to run (mail would be nice to keep running, same with AIM)

Fix the Bluetooth Issues!

I hope all this effort on adding new functions does not push aside bug fixes!

There are serious issues with bluetooth audio function with the handsfree in many cars including both my wife's 2009 Nissan and my 2008 Infiniti. These issues are well documented on Apple support and other sites. The phones do not disconnect properly locking up the audio system. Only turning the car off and then on resets it! Makes bt unusable. Things were fine until an update or two ago.

Please Apple, fix the bugs first!

I concur, and a couple of features missing in the list, namely:

- Capability to accept unlimited number of applications (e.g., infinitely more than the current limit of 9 desktops/screens). This is, indeed, imperative for us, "AppStore junkies" (a phrase, not mine, but well-descriptive of many an iPhone owner)!

- Stability enhancements (in particular with Safari - despite its infinitely superior interface the thing crashes like any windoze application. N.B.: the above has been mentioned, but requires a frequent mention nonetheless)

- Copy-&-Paste must have a system-wide implementation, without limits in pasteboard/individual clip sizes (this was already mentioned as well)

- Horizontal Keyboard orientation must be applied throughout the whole system as well, not limited to a number of applications

- Optional WritingPad-like keyboard input, also implemented system-wide

- A launcher with support for categories to trigger applications without screen-flips (much like Erica's AppFlow, or better if possible, and certainly faster). With support for various sorting criteria.

- Immediate access to the 3G on-off switch

- Email marking (as read, unread, etc.) and flagging property

- A system-wide finder/spotlight utility. With support for various sorting criteria.

- A complete and reliable speech-to-text suite, such as MacSpeech Dictate/Dragon naturally Speaking (again, system-wide integrated).

PALM TREO:

X Cut&Paste (come on the Mac128k had this feature)
X Double click to select a word
X Video recording
X Global Search
X Bluetooth enabled keyboards
X Bluetooth syncing
X Bluetooth music listening
_ Horizontal text input in all applications
X Sync notes and to dos
X Ability to sync documents and edit them
_ Flash - (There is a hack)
X Laptop tethering
X Streamlined email reading between accounts
X Push notification (w/3rd party add on)
X Back up all application data on phone
X A Finder that allows for categories
X Turn by Turn navigation (via TomTom bluetooth gps plus others)
_ ITunes Store via 3G
X VOICE DIALING !!!
X MMS

I DO HAVE A PALM TREO!!!

But I also have an iPhone and the iPhone is superior on many functions but they seemed to have left off very important FUNDAMENTAL features. Iit is REALLY frustrating because I would love to have these features back.

What do I miss most?

Cut & Paste, MMS, Turn by Turn Navigation, and external Bluetooth keyboard!

Cut and paste.... Come on, can it really be that freaking hard? Can it??? What the hell is taking so damn long?

I had begun an excellent post, a few moments ago. My points were clear, everything made sense. As a direct result of that post, we would have all solved all the problems, become very happy, and lived longer happier existences.

Sadly, I was writing it on my iPhone, and made the mistake of hitting the backspace key, which would not stop backspacing slowly through my post. Then, when it had eaten about half of the wonderful missive I had created, Safari died a horrible screaming death, and crashed.

That post can never be recovered. Oh, how great the lamenting!

Seriously, though. Just fix friggin' Safari.

I have had that happen on my iPhone too with the delete not stopping. What causes that?

Short answer? Evil bug from the 9th plane of Infernity.
Reality? Probably related to Safari's inability to manage the small amount of RAM is has to play in. Even going vertical-to-horizontal can kill it.

They say this bug also causes the iPhone to, just before the crash, to very slightly engage the vibration mechanism, causing a slight "hum". To which I say, getting into the holiday spirit, "Bah. Hum bug".

(OK, I made up the part about the humming)

Anyone know if there are any plans to implement a calendar search function? That is pretty damn simple, too. Any upcoming apps that might. I saw a jailbroken app, but don't want to deal with the hassle of jailbreaking right now since the phone has been fairly stable for me lately (cue malfunction of my iPhone).

First, c/p is not being held back due to technological difficulty. Remember, Apple is a group of extreme talented professionals. They are not some ghetto development community. If they wanted to do it, they certainly could.

And for people saying they would never need c/p, here are 2 examples. You are texting with a friend. You tell him about a new WebApp you think is cool. He thinks its cool too, so you decide to text him the url. In this case, you will have to flip back and forth between Safari and SMS while you type the address for him. Another example of c/p would be adding bookmarklets. Some of these javascripts are extremely long and you would never want to manually type them in. Yes, there are ways around this, but c/p would make this a lot easier.

And can someone explain to me why MMS is a dead technology when everyone I know has it and uses it extensively? When I hear about something being "dead," as in Latin being a "dead" language, usually this means that nobody uses it anymore. Millions of people still actively and extensively use MMS.

Yeah, I want Flash too. Now, I will agree, Flash is something that should be put to sleep, but it's all we got now. At least give us a suitable work-around.

The only thing in that list I am remotely excited about is Street View (yay google!). That will be the salve i will put over the gaping wound that is no push notifications.

If that wonderful jailbreak solution hadn't have come out to let apps run in the background I probably would have killed someone.

PUSH PUSH PUSH
COPY & PASTE
TV (at least Hulu or sites like ABC, FOX, NBC that let you watch shows online)

and about MMS... i just want to be able to text people pictures!! most phones do this and AT&T makes lots of money on it.

Edit: OH and NOTES AND TODO's!!!! Why do they not sync with my computers Notes and ToDo's???

If you're in the UK, you can use the BBC's iPlayer to watch TV from your phone.
