I just want them to sort out the syncing issues with ical that i have (i.e. i cant, ever, it freezes.) And also to sort out the fact that playing music on an iphone doesnt seem to up my playcount when i go back into itunes on my mac. It's playing havoc with my OCD...

insert sounds of apple engineers complaining about the customers demanding copy and paste. the logical way to implement copy and paste would be to highlight something by holding your finger and dragging, but that's already being used by the function that allows you to move the cursor when you screw up. since it's a touch screen, it's not an easy problem to create a new function to highlight, then choose to copy/cut and paste that both a) doesn't interfere with existing touch screen functions and b) is easy to use. chill, it's on the way.

also, in response to the argument that other smartphones have that feature, it's a lot easier to implement a copy and paste function if you have a lot of buttons than if you have a touch screen.

EDIT: just thought of a way they could make it happen. have a button in one corner that switches the current interface from text input to a copy and paste. i.e., inputting text is optional, but you can drag to highlight and you have buttons for copying and pasting.

Why not just have it as it is?
Using one finger moves the cursor and activates the mag glass. Then which that is going on, but a second finger onto the screen and that activates selection? Job done?

My prediction on record is that Apple will NOT add copy/paste, video recording, and all the major features that people whine about until iPhone OS 3.0 which will be released after Snow Leopard probably with the iPhone 3rd Generation hardware towards the end of '09 and will be a nice overhaul with lots of under the hood benefits from Snow Leopard and it will of course be a huge publicity hoopla.

Exactly. Got to have something to keep people paing for the next new model. Much easier with the computers as they can keep visibly improving performance; not so easy when you can only run one thing at a time anyway!

Either the next model or the one after will probably improve the camera and offer video recording and video calling. After everyone has waited a few more years for copy & paste, it might be enough to justify a new model in and of itself ;).

As for features in the short term, I would actually quite like the new iPod Nano's 'shake to shuffle' feature; at the moment if what I'm listening to on the iPhone finishes, I have to turn it on and go at least three taps to shuffle all songs, and I would rather not have 'Songs' on the bottom bar anyway. If I could just shake the thing to shuffle all, even while it was locked, it would be most useful!

Two requests

1. Reliable Safari.

2. Ability to send a calendar invite.

These two missing features have me thinking about moving back to a blackberry.

While I love the iphone, if I can't do my basic job with the phone, what good is it?

And oh yes, I would be able to move to Verizon and not have to suffer AT&Ts transitional 3g network.

Update

How about a landscape keyboard for texting and MMS??? These are things that every other smart phone has including the Storm....Need to keep up

Ya, it evolved into a piece of crap phone. I never had any issues with 1.x, now that 2.x is here...nothing but problems.

Really? Maybe I've lucked out, but even though I have some issues (and they are pretty infrequent), the newer capabilities far outweigh the setbacks (at least in my case).

Finally i thought it would never come.

Why are apple so difficult when it comes to adding missing features and functions.

Everyone has been saying since it came out, where are these?

Copy and Paste? - How hard it really to write this into a firmware? They already have the magnifier there?

MMS? If the HTC's, Blackberry's and Samsung's what is stopping Apple from adding this into SMS

Horizontal Composing of Emails and SMS? - Still dont understand that one, if they can let Safari have this feature why not in SMS?

All the technology is already in the phone. What is holdiong them back.

Ok, all i wanted from 2.2 firmware was:

1. Fix to the Mail app that actually PUSHES email down to my phone. - THE MOST IMPORTANT TO ME
2. If possible, landscape SMS and e-mail, since they have already implemented this for Safari.

Thats ALL I WANTED!!!!!

:apple: KrayzieKray :apple:

hope less crash on safari.

ditto! I hope they have a bunch of little things in the update to make it not so disappointing. True, most phones are never updated and we will have updates till doomsday, but make the updates include at least *some* of the users' wishlist

Im not to bothered by copy and paste, its something i wouldn't ever use. Although I do see the need for it

Thing I don't understand is why are people complaining about it?

the type of people that need copy and paste probable converted form a blackberry or some other smart phone which they used for business use!

My question....

Why didn't you just stick with the phone you were using, Everyone knew that the iPhone lacked C/P, Push etc. if it is that mission critical for you to have it stick with blackberry untill Jobbs makes it available for the iPhone, which would have happened much sooner had people not bought the phone due to the fact it was lacking the above mentioned! However people have bought it and continue to buy it (myself included) and complain about it if you like but sales are being made making the iPhone number 2 smart phone in the world only just behind RIM. Accept it for what it is request it but dont bitch about it.

the end!

YAWN......

WTF! WHERE THE F#@$ IS CUT AND PASTE ????????

okay I had to add my voice to the chorus. I have only had the phone a month and I am tired of it.

Anyone that asks about my phone and after I show some nifty things, I make sure they understand that it does NOT have cut and paste and is very irritating to write emails, etc.

For the idiotic Apple apologists on here, I DID NOT come from using another smart phone. I was using a RAZR without text or email, etc. so my expectations are that of any typical consumer that when they want to access the web, use email, write notes, journal, etc. would have. I love my iPhone, but this is a GLARING deficit in critical features for the iPhone be what it promises to be. Version 1 lacking it, ok, Version 2 lacking it, NOT OK!

Ok that's a fair comment however, Again!, Why buy it? you either have too much money, badly educated on the product or a bit of both. Cut and Paste is a subject that has been complained about non stop from day one. It was always going to be something that was going to be anticipated on every update since 2g 1.1 and like every software/hardware manufacturer nothing happens the way we want it to. So again why complain you bought it knowing it didn't have copy and paste (or maybe you didn't know, if you didn't know it's your own fault!) copy and paste is a possibility but never has it been a promise nor has it been mentioned. If you needed that feature you should have bought a blackberry or waited untill a confirmed update with copy and paste was released.

I could give a million reasons for why people shouldn't complain about it, however the main argument is that there are other phones on the market that offer the functionality you seek.

You don't go out and buy a Ford and then complain that it isn't a Toyota. You know what you buy before you buy it! If not it's your own misinformed fault!

I don't have any stability problems with OS2.1 on my 1st gen phone. The only thing that I would really like is another Safari speed boost. Even though Apple seems to have given up on new Safari 4 builds for the time being, the latest Webkit nightlies are very fast, especially considering that new Squirrel-Monkey (or whatever it is called) JScript compiler. Overhauling the webkit version used on the iPhone could give us some significant acceleration.

As for copy and paste: it's just not going to happen, 'nuff said. It seems like too much of a pain in the ass to implement considering the current "hold to drop cursor" UI paradigm. It would be cool if they could use a "hold and select cursor position with one finger, then hold and drag to select text with another finger" type gesture, but it would require a major OS overhaul, so it would be something to come later rather than sooner.

The "pushy" features I really couldn't care less about, seems like a massive drain on the battery to have all the iphone antennae going all the time, so it is something I would just end up disabling anyway.

This is actually a great point.....

This would only give everyone something else to complain about

how soon after we receive an update with push notification do you think we would see a thread with the following title

iPhone battery life sucks

I know this is redundant, but I'll throw in my personal top 13 list (not in any specific order):

1) Copy & Paste
2) MMS (Send and receive)
3) I think text messages should backup to iChat transcripts
4) To-Do's
5) Notes should backup to notes in mail, or with stickies or something
6) better integration/synching with Google Cal. and Gmail contacts
7) I should be able to browse the iTunes store when not on WiFi, even if I can't download it, I want to add it to a shopping cart for when I get home
8) Landscape keyboard throughout the system
9) System wide search (like spotlight for the iphone)
10) Support for an external (bluetooth) keyboard
11) Text Messages should be treated a bit more like emails (for example: have a "drafts" option so I can type a text, save what I've done so far and send later)
12) Anyone else get some pretty bad latency from time to time from when I send a text message and the other person receives it, or vice versa ?
I get this fairly often and if possible would like it fixed.
13) Profiles, that store settings for different locations I might be (Home, the office, parents house, On the go, Airport, etc...)

This. And I just hope for better phone reception/less dropped calls.

I live in Philadelphia and the amount of dropped calls and weird 3G signal strengths are not fun. By that I mean I will go from full 3G reception to no service at all by moving the phone a foot.

Hate to tell you but at this point it has nothing to do with firmware. Sorry. If you're in a bad 3G area, and trying to sustain calls over 3G, you're hard pressed to blame Apple.

You either have a defective iPhone, or the coverage in your area is terrible. The iPhone 3G does not typically behave as you've described.

1) Copy & PasteFor the 100th, who is typing such novels on the iPhone, then realizing they're in the wrong app!!?!?!
2) MMS (Send and receive) While its completely unnecessary due to a thing called e-mail, it is a rather embarrassing omission by Apple
3) I think text messages should backup to iChat transcripts Um, no. SMS is SMS, not iChat. iChat backs up to iChat transcripts. Several SMS backup tools on Cydia.
4) To-Do's App store. Notes. Mail. Cal. How many more places to do you need to remind yourself from?
5) Notes should backup to notes in mail, or with stickies or somethingYes it absolutely should
6) better integration/synching with Google Cal. and Gmail contacts Since this is the Apple phone, not the Google phone, I think this is much further down the pike
7) I should be able to browse the iTunes store when not on WiFi, even if I can't download it, I want to add it to a shopping cart for when I get home Should have been day 1, no question. 10 mb limit for purchasing music would be no problem. Possibly because they want you to buy albums, not just songs?
8) Landscape keyboard throughout the system Usefulness highly debatable
9) System wide search (like spotlight for the iphone) Should have been day 1, no question. Try QuickGold on Cydia. Apple needs to buy it.
10) Support for an external (bluetooth) keyboard Meh, excessive.
11) Text Messages should be treated a bit more like emails (for example: have a "drafts" option so I can type a text, save what I've done so far and send later) Should have been day 1, no question. Try biteSMS on Cydia
12) Anyone else get some pretty bad latency from time to time from when I send a text message and the other person receives it, or vice versa ?
I get this fairly often and if possible would like it fixed. Yes and you can thank ATT
13) Profiles, that store settings for different locations I might be (Home, the office, parents house, On the go, Airport, etc...)Good idea, but multiple profiles usually suggest multiple users, which cannot be encouraged

Ummmm, doesn't really seem much like an exciting upgrade that all of us iPhone owners should be looking forward to...I mean come on, MMS messaging, cut and paste, I could go on. Instead we get a google street view, some other bulls*** and best of all, japanese emojicons ???? WTF?

emoji is a huge addition. millions of people love them on other phones

Millions of people, which essentially you mean like .0002% of the world? Seriously though, emoji are traditional to Japanese mobile devices, and it is obvious that this iPhone update is not catered towards people looking for real results. I mean, what would you rather have?

The ability to cut and paste your text..... or the ability to send a small blue face with big eyes to your friend through sms notating how surprised you are at how useless 2.2 will be.
