iPhone 2.2 Hidden Features: Google Street View, Emoji, Auto-Correction Off

to be available in all applications. I can type very well with the keyboard in landscape mode.

I agree. If you ask me, having only "portrait keyboard" available in an application that depends primarily on text entry should be considered against Apple's app guidelines and strongly discouraged/ridiculed/shunned/blasted in the MacRumors forums.. Too bad Apple would be breaking its own rule in all of the apps but one ;)

Wife will LOVE auto-correct off. Constantly writing e-mails in both english and portuguese - auto-correct disrupted the efficiency of portuguese e-mails.

Two things about autocorrect:

1. If you need another language, add another 'keyboard' in Settings > General > International > Keyboards > Portuguese. Now you can switch languages with a button next to the space bar, including localized autocorrect options.

2. To add a word to the dictionary, hit the 'x' on the incorrectly suggested word. This will add the word you just typed to the list.

Option 2 does not fix the lol vs. LOL issue, and I can't seem to get rid of 'fir' when I try to type 'for'.. So yes: editing of the autocorrect list needed!

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

Nice to see Apple answering the cry of many iPhone users out there with the option to disable Auto-correct. Street view is also a welcomed addition.

Uhhh I'm pretty sure you can't add any words to the list by hitting the little 'x'. The 'x' is just an 'accept' or 'reject' button and does not remember any of your words.

How many people where asking for the Japanese smilies thing? other than the Japanese? How useful is it?

Not so much useful, but necessary for Apple if they want to sell in Japan. I have never received a message (mail) in Japan, from a Japanese person, that didn't contain an emoji. They litter all texts with them and it allows you to get a feel of the tone of the message - and looks cute. This is a huge deal for my Japanese friends - when I told them they were asking me when this is released. To the average Japanese person, this is much more wanted than copy and paste.

I don't remember what version it was but at one time it would auto correct cuss words too. The auto correct is kind of a catch-22. You need it to type relatively fast with the keyboard but some of the crap it spits out is annoying as hell. (count another for the LOL thing) haha

lmost there

awesome news. Now my list of desires for my phone has shrunk to copy and paste, background notification, and most importantly, tighter integration between Safari and Maps. I hate that if I want to find the address of a business that isn't a large national chain I have to look up the address in Safari, memorize it, and then close safari open maps type in the address and finally go. Either I should be able to use google maps to find the address like you can in safari, or I should be able to click any address and have it open in maps the way phone numbers auto-dial when tapped.

Hmmm... I don't want autocorrection off - I just want it to stop converting UK into I'm!

Try putting a .co.uk (.co.I'm) email in when signing in to Facebook, etc and you'll see what I mean!

Two things on this:

1. It doesn't matter. DNS isn't case sensitive :)

2. Instead of typing .co.uk, and having it auto-correct, just hold the .com button and the option to select .co.uk will appear.

Google Maps in English

Why is it that Google Maps on the iPhone shows a map of Bangkok with street names in Thai? On my Macbook it shows English and Thai. I can't read Thai. Will this be fixed in 2.2?

I don't really care about those updates.... what I want and need is copy&paste. I still can't believe they don't have it yet...

Let's not forget the cosmetic changes to Safari...THAT was really a priority.

Come on Apple, Copy/Paste, Video Recording, and Disk Access.

wake up Apple

Agreed and then some. This is the Achilles heel of the iPhone once you start to use it on a daily basis. Everything else is simply window dressing. Fix core functionality first Apple!!

I think you may be wrong there.

Mine has learnt 'luv', 'xoxox' and a few others. And other users seem to be learning too.

Did you think no for any particular reason or just a guess?

While I'm here, does anyone else get annoyed about the fact that the phone knows when you hit the wrong key but doesn't have a standard spell-check?

Street view is an excellent new feature. I think I'd use this living in Manhattan.

With that said, for the love of Jobs, where's my copy and paste?!?

So, how come when the Japanese bitch n' moan about something as trivial as this, they get it. But, when we do the same thing (for push, GPS, c/p, MMS), we don't get it.

I can't wait to download 2.2 :D

Hope they release it soon! Although I'd rather wait longer for them to get it as stable as possible than a quick, buggy release.

This is getting better!

This is getting really exciting!
There are a few things id like to see in the next software updates though!
-Search in music
-Copy and Paste (mainly to shut everyone up, but it would be nice)
-Texting, notes etc in landscape mode
Double clicking the home button to pause or skip a song while doing something else is really handy, but it's a real hassle if you want to choose a different song by tapping music, because then you have to get out of music, look for the app and the go back into it. I think if you tap music after double clicking the home button, the app icon picture should appear in the corner of music, jiggling around, or something, then once you've finished choosing you're music, you simply tap it to go right back to where you were.
I doubt we will see any of this for quiet some time, Lol, but it would all be really handy to have.

I ducking hate that shot, every time i try to type duck i get duck, those batches need to fix that.

Typed on my iPhone.

Here's an idea:

People sound like idiots when they use the words "lol" and "ur". Why don't you just learn how to type a few extra letters and let it auto-correct for you. I'm already very annoyed that when I try to type "I" and miss and hit a "U" it keeps the U! Since when is "u" a word?

By the way... those of you waiting for Gmail push... I'm getting Gmail push right now without any other email accounts forwarded. I just have my one Gmail account and email is being pushed to it on my iPhone. Here's how to do it:

Setup your Gmail account on your iPhone as normal.
Turn on the Push option
Turn fetching to 1 hour (seems to work on 1 hour and doesn't work on normal).

If you do all these things... email will come in within a minute of sending it... NOT an hour. I don't know why it works but, it works.

It's unbelievable that we're 15+ months into the iPhone world and Apple still hasn't implemented copy/paste. Aren't they tired of people griping about this? Aren't they sick of every reviewer pointing this weakness out? It's embarrassing. Just fix it already. What, are they planning to save this feature until 3.0? Ludicrous.

Oh, and where the heck is our voice-based turn-by-turn navigation app? I'm not buying a 3G until such an app is available.
