Turn off auto-correction or improve it ??

I wonder if Apple will eventually improves the builin dictionnaries of the integrated virtual keyboard... and also improve the auto-correction feature instead of allowing to turn it off... blackberry suretype seems better for now...

I hope all these features come to the iPhone here in the U.S. If they don't, well they don't. I'm not going to bash apple for not including them and continue to pay my monthly bill. Come on who does that, bash apple and pay their cell phone bill?

i want sms forwards

And I want the ability to forward contacts/vCards in an SMS (actually, I can't remember ANY recent mobile phone that didn't have this super-basic capability....). The current iPhone SDK doesn't provide an officially supported way to programmatically pre-fill an SMS with content (e.g., phone number, address,...), so there isn't even a chance for 3rd party apps to fill in this gap.

That would be a nice feature to add. Since apple is trying to get in the enterprise market, we may see this.

Because, Japanese are not only "bitch n'moan", they are simply not buying the iphone. This is hurting Apple. They had big plans for the Japanese market (based on the success of the ubiquitous ipod) and no one is biting. I saw one report that said iphone sales in Japan were a tiny fraction of what Apple had predicted and hoped for. (based on Softbank figures)

The emoji was just one of the reasons why nobody is buying the iphone. There are others but this might persuade some to get an iphone (and not just as a second phone!). It will also stop some of the negative press about the iphone in Japan.

When you non-Japanese "bitch n'moan", it doesn't mean so much to Apple. A lot of the people complaining here have already bought the iphone. It is not a show-stopping event. Apple will get round to your concerns when they can.

The Japanese have voted with their wallet. This is simply a rational business decision.

sorry ....

No, don't be sorry. This is a very good explanation and hits it on the head. It's kind of sad though. I just hope some of these missing functions don't become the missing right-clicker (something that Apple refuses to do, no matter what). As others point out, there are some basic functions missing and there really are no good explanations for their abscence.

Myself, I am currently on the fence for getting an iPhone. I'm done with my contract, so it's just a matter of switching. I'm looking past all of these short-comings, but sometimes I wonder if it would just be better to buy an iTouch and a different kind of phone (Blackberry or something). I would have 2 devices, but wouldn't be missing any features.

Google Street View. C'mon, this is a nice novelty/toy, but what functionality does it serve?

This is why Apple can keep on going with holding basic features and make a fuzz when they release them, if they release them at all.
I'm happy that they are doing such a good job of even updating their product.

Uhhh I'm pretty sure you can't add any words to the list by hitting the little 'x'. The 'x' is just an 'accept' or 'reject' button and does not remember any of your words.
It sure does work... after you reject a word a handful of times it learns the replacement and suggests it when appropriate (and also doesn't block it). My iPhone has learned things like my cat's name and even suggests it when I miss a letter at times. I've had no trouble with it. If you accept corrections over your intended word, though, that seems to make it more difficult. You might try resetting your dictionary (I saw instructions somewhere) to start over.

Support for Japanese emoji icons

I hope the rest of the world gets this too!
That would be cool, but I imagine both phones have to support it.
So if it works, it might be iPhone to iPhone only...
I don't know the actual mechanics, though. Just a hunch.

auto-correction

Finally!! this is going to be the best iPhone OS improvement ever for me. I found auto-correction helpful in english, but in languages with bold dictionaries, this function never corrected me right. Btw shortcuts like lol, rofl, etc.. are used worldwide.. my iPhone is correcting 'lol' to 'kol', what a rarely used word.:( it's confusing!

Emoji.. i don't care. Google street view.. no content here in Czech.

Anyway, goood news! :D

The correction feature is useful but for me it should just be opt-in instead of opt-out.

I'd like to change auto-correction to auto-suggest-correction. If I type a word and it thinks it knows better, it would display the suggestion. I'd tap to accept the correction or keep typing to retain what I typed originally.

Let's not forget the cosmetic changes to Safari...THAT was really a priority.
1) What on earth makes you think this affected a major project?
2) I love how people are whining about the Safari change when we don't even know hot it will work. I'll wager there is a good chance that once you select one of the windows it expands to take up most/all of the horizontal space, thus removing the second bar below, and giving you a better view of the drop-down list below. It might be useful.

They don’t ‘bitch ‘n’ moan’...

So, how come when the Japanese bitch n' moan about something as trivial as this, they get it. But, when we do the same thing (for push, GPS, c/p, MMS), we don't get it.

...they simply choose something else on the market that does have it. It is much easier, less stressful and more effective.

And ‘trivial’ is just a matter of perspective. If the majority of 100+ million mobile users use emoji, then obviously Apple don’t view it as such. In fact, it would be ‘critical’ if the iPhone is to break into this lucrative market.

Google Street Views?

VERY NICE!

Now this is where the 3G will really shine. Out on the road, doing that over edge would be, not as much fun, shall we say?

So they are listening to us users... maybe they'll be copy and paste too.. maybe video? Or am I thinking to far ahead..

However, I still believe that MMS should be implemented. While not every other phone has (or needs) cut/paste, virtually every other phone does have MMS, and to leave out what is considered a "basic" feature doesn't do Apple any good. Though, since its been this long, I'm wondering if AT&T doesn't have something to do with the lack of MMS.

I doubt it - remember that the iPhone is only linked to AT&T in one market.

Actually, seeing that MMS is a revenue earner for providers, I suspect they're not happy with the fact the iPhone is lacking this feature.

will they have a "Phone from the late 90's" expansion pack that will allow us iPhone users to send and receive picture messages?

Agreed. I'm new to iPhone and haven't had to use that, but it was occasionally useful on my last phone.

It's definately not a handful. I've been trying to make my phone learn 'PC' and 'UK' for ages.. I've typed it and corrected it well over 100 times (*well* over as those are common phrases in SMS).

Don't get me started of f..ing postcodes.. the number I've had to retype multiple times as it completely scrambles them..

Turn off auto-correct...yippeee! I'm tired of fighting username entry on those applications and sites that insist on using auto-correct in this field. T-Mobile hotspot login is one that drives me nuts.

If anyone here is familiar with Apple. Apple doesn't like to clutter up their products with a ton of options and choices. They're ease of use and small learning curves. So your BlackBerry can do everything... so what... It seems like BlackBerries are for the people who like to tinker and love customizing their own experience down to the littlest things while the iPhone is more for the people who trust that the iPhone will give them a better more-friendly user experience. If you start cluttering up the iPhone with a million-and-a-half options, then there goes the ease of use and then it won't FEEL like an Apple product anymore. Mac OS X is the same way... not a whole mess load of options. The iPod is like that too... it's the Apple way. They just focus more on giving you the simplest yet, most effective user experience.

Does sound good, it is a pity however that Apple need a rival phone to be launched and the threat of one from Nokia before they release what people are after.
That beta was seeded long before Android. So it's definitely not Android that makes Apple implement those features.

Emoji - don't care

Street view - not supported in Turkey

Auto correction off - HURRAY! I am getting a hard time writing SMS and stuff, because i live in Turkey and Turkish has nothing in common with English. I sometimes of course write English too in Safari but if it would just underline the word to say it was wrong (like in the computer version) would be better. Actually it would be great, one tap to the underlined word and it changes or some suggestions comes up.

People sound like idiots when they use the words "lol" and "ur". Why don't you just learn how to type a few extra letters and let it auto-correct for you. I'm already very annoyed that when I try to type "I" and miss and hit a "U" it keeps the U! Since when is "u" a word?

Time consuming, that is why text messaging has its own language. Also cheaper - try sending a long text and not using abbreviations, you'll end up using two or three text messages to send it. Abbreviations prevent this.

Also, it would look weird to see someone say, "Yes, was a good night! Laughing out loud." And 'lol' has lost its meaning and has just become something somebody says when they can't be arsed to think of anything else. Rarely do I see it actually used because something was actually "laugh out loud" material.
