Safari is much more stable but still crashes. My girl checked her email in yahoo and crashed almost every time. Also after surfing for a while it crashed on me too. I wonder if they will completely fix it. What I'm waiting is for push!

umm... I believe the idea behind this phone is to provide you that map. Why would you have an iphone and carry a map? Little wierd.. man... I can just picture you now... Lost in a desert with a GPS phone and you are going in circles with a paper map.

Are you really that much of a tard??? News Flash: Google Maps is a map. Face palm.

Not true at all.

What is the point of release a beefed up Maps app or Remote app? How does that make them any money at all?

Apple has taken a public stance against MMS and Copy/Paste - they'll probably change their mind eventually and come around...but who knows.

Don't you think Google is sending a boatload of money Apple's way for making Google Maps one of the iPhone's most celebrated/improved features? I'm sure this is some serious money changing hands.

Reception

Guys... this was a maintenance release! I think Apple customers are spoiled in thinking that every update has to have "big new features"! It's evolving, and I agree with earlier posts that 3.0 will bring real change (I would suspect MacWorld time frame?).

With that said, I did notice on my travels home yesterday (12 hour drive) my reception was way better in area's that we're poor before. So I'm thinking they did some background improvements in the reception department as well. This makes me very happy! :)

Anyways... at least we get regular updates and I know the best is yet to come!

Enjoy!

It's a licensing issue. This has been widely reported. Apparently labels want to charge more for OTA downloads and Apple says no.

If the rumoured deals about DRM-free songs are true, it's a fair bet Apple is also negotiating OTA downloads. They don't like a half-accessible store.

Really? Are you sure it's not AT&T wanting to heighten their profit margins by limiting bandwidth on iPhone?

Talk about "not true". Apple has NOT taken any "stance against" MMS and Copy/Paste. Just the opposite. They've taken NO stance. Jobs immortal answer to almost everything is "Never say never". Copy & Paste is rumored to be in the works, but is not being prioritized. It represents an architecture change with wide-ranging implications. It's not as simple a decision as one would think.

When it gets implemented, many applications will count on it to be THE methodology moving forward. The last statement Apple made was that it wasn't high up on the priority list to have completed.

Regarding MMS, its the same deal. In fact, they just announced support for it in Sweden. Moreover, I think part of the hold up, is the push notification feature. Once this is in place, any third party service could tell you when you've received an MMS, if they work out a deal with your phone company (or your phone company does it themselves). I can think of a gazillion ways for companies to do it without Apple's direct support.

Apple has bigger fish to fry. MMS is old news. Apple DOES need to change "Photo Album" to "Media Album" and allow for the recording of video though. That's another aspect of MMS support that they need to do the groundwork for.

While that's certainly an issue (when it comes to full albums), but its DEFINITELY the licensing of OTA downloads (and other licensing issues) that STOPS Apple from downloading songs (and even audiobooks) over anything more than Wifi only. Apple allows podcasts AND apps under 10MB to download OTA. Moreover, on Android, the Amazon Mp3 Store only allows downloads over WiFi too. The kicker is, at least THEY allow browsing and previews over cellular. Apple doesn't want to tease people, but I think Apple should allow people to "mark" or "purchase" songs for download later when WiFi is available. I'm not sure if that just flirts too much for their liking though.

(emphasis mine)

Licensing my ass. Why then would they care about app size?

I guess this whole "unlimited bandwidth" thing isn't without limitation.

Never buying this crap.

Oh, and I noticed there were like 40% negative rating for this post, what's everyone upset about? No really, it's not rhetorical: I don't own one, I want to know seriously what people's concerns are, and I haven't seen many angry posts here.

Not everyone agrees with this interpretation of this horrible law, but Apple is sued so often that I expect it wants to err on the side of caution.

"not everyone"... try "nobody"

It's horse crap. Why would it be $10? does S-Ox have a provision saying it has to be $10? Why not 1 penny? Why not the cost of a CC transaction?

I believe it says "fair market value". Have you even bothered to look this stuff up yourself?

FWIW, the Apple VP of iPod and iPhone marketing (Greg Joswiak) did state (during an Engadget interview a few months ago) that cut and paste was on the list of things to

According to Joswiak, cut and paste is on the to-do list, but it wasn't quite high enough to be included.

think they are only available on the japanese (or if you set language/keyboard to japanese)

i darent test it as I dont want my phone to be in japanese

With regard to emoji, I think it a little unfair to put all that effort in for the Japanese market and not be able to insert a few extra lines of code into SMS.app (or whatever the app is actually called) in order that Western markets can have the same functionality in the form of emoticons.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but it would be a nice cosmetic addition and is somewhat disappointing Apple would spend all that time and resources on one market only when the combined size of Latin alphabet using markets vastly outnumbers the population of Japan by over a billion people...

I hate to say this (for possible fear of my life :D)

When I have put these on other phones and sent one, it sends as an MMS

Not sure how all this works in Japan

don't know if it's been mentioned but i've always listened to white noise or easy relax apps to fall asleep. but now with 2.2 when my phone is locked the apps stop playing.
BOO

Home screen pages

Anyone else notice that you can now tap the lower right/left corners of the home screen to switch pages instead of swiping?

It has to do with the coding in the Application, more than it does the update. I have aSleep and it too stops playing when the iPod Touch is locked, however two other applications (games) continue to play music when the touch is locked. I would imagine that the applications can be updated to still play while iPhone OS is locked.
