as speculated when you delete an app it asks you to rate it...

very cool

So I thought street view was supposed to be controlled by acceloramator. Am I missing something or did that not make it?

A solid "meh" to this update. Not nearly as good as 2.1 update was in terms of new stuff. Street view is useless for me because it's not available where I live.
This shouldve been labeled 2.1.1. Not worth a full .x bump.

Oh really? You can make that call? As if those numbers really meant anything. I wouldn't mind if they called this v11 (or however many updates there have been)

very cool

I actually don't like that feature, simply because if you're deleting an app you obviously don't like it. So when you rate it you will generally give it a low rating, even if it's just because you had no use for it, but others would really like it. That means that over all the apps' scores will go down, even if they aren't bad apps.

Not necessarily. Some delete them off their device and keep them in iTunes or later.

Oh yeah, btw, safari just crashed. I guess everything was solved.

Not sure if this is new to 2.2, but I've discovered if you wish to delete a podcast directly from the iPhone, swipe your finger backwards across the podcast title. This will bring up a red "delete" button.

Latest iPhone update erased all my paid applications

This update asked me, "do you want to back up your iPhone first?" I answered yes.

It said, "this update will erase everything on your iPhone, then sync it to iTunes, do you want to do this?" I answered yes.

It said, "you have applications on your iPhone that are not in your iTunes library, do you want to transfer them?" I said yes.

When it started syncing, I started seeing the names of all my applications coming up on the pregress bar, with the word REMOVING next to each application name. After the sync was complete, I no longer had any of my 20 applications on my iPhone, and they were not in my iTunes library either. About $100 wasted. I'm wondering if it deleted any of my paid music also.

BS!
You can download all apps that you've paid for again for free.

Not necessarily... I've deleted plenty of apps from my phone simply to make way for new ones not because i disliked them, they're still in my iTunes and i'll load them up again when they're needed or wanted again.

finally had to jailbreak my phone....

I was trying to be a true apple zealot for as long as I could. =)

I was hoping to see an apple provided tethering solution in iPhone software v2.2. It's been out several days, and no gleam of hope for a tethering solution. It sadly was a financial decision to jailbreak my phone. I can't afford to pay for a duplicate service to tether my laptop to another mobile network. I was paying for a Verizon card AND my iPhone 3G unlimited. Didn't make sense.

So bye bye Verizon, Hello QuickPwn & PDANet!!!

PDANet on the iPhone is exactly what I needed. I tried iPhoneModem but that app is terrible in comparison to PDANet. You install PDANet by doing the QuickPwn and then installing PDAnet through the cyndia application. I'm still not sure what "Installer" is. Probably a legacy application installer system?? Anyway..

PDANet FEATURES:
- COMPLETELY tethers your laptop to your iPhone.
- ALL services work without setting up proxy services.
- PDANet continues to run in background on the phone so if you grab a call you don't loose your connection.
- extremely simple to switch to using PDAnet

Anyone holding their breath for Apple to release a tethering solution, quit holding your breath. It ain't happening any time soon.

I am pulling 1.67Mbps (203kB/s) on my laptop tethered with my iPhone 3G now!! Results from my laptop tethered: http://testmyiphone.com/results/i1051Ju493Z

crazy!!

No, for me, apps literally open and are ready to use in about 2 seconds. Even for App Store apps, it's 2-4 seconds, depending on how heavy the app is.

2.2 is a godsend. With 2.1, apps regularly took 8-10 seconds to load, even small ones like Clock and Notes. It's much, much faster for me now, even to open most apps from the App Store, and Apple apps like Maps, Settings, Camera, etc. :D

I agree with the snappiness. For me, calendar would take a few seconds to load, which began to frustrate me a bit. With the update, I'm noticing a nearly immediate open with calendar, mail, contacts, and settings. Menu to menu changes are also faster. I should add that I had to do a full restore when I updated to 2.2, so time will tell whether it was the update or the clean phone that is the cause of the speed.

i'm also located in vienna...do we get public transporation infos round here?

Yes. In Switzerland and Austria we are privileged in Europe to have the fabulous Public Transit support in Google Maps. It works with national and international trains too! Why only Switzerland and Austria? Because those countries had the European Soccer Championship (Fußball-EM) in summer this year. At least one thing soccer is good for...

That's a real outstanding feature of the iPhone!

I think 2.2 s a pretty solid update for me. Line in audio for my voice record apps. Updated Google Maps arrived just in time for my trip to NYC. It was nice to plan an itinerary of historic places, museums restaurants and bars. Walking distance and Subway Schedule with waiting times station and train number all neatly calculated. And did I mention street view. Pretty cool. Calendar tweaks and Safari update were nice too. While I don't do a lot of email over the phone, cut and paste tethering not a big deal for me. If they were essential, I'd go back to jailbreakng my phone which is always an option. One app I really do miss though. Tunewiki not yet available in the App Store

QuickPwn works great (FW 2.2 EDGE iPhone)

I just successfully upgraded my original (EDGE) iPhone from 2.1 to 2.2. It went very smooth, much easier than for 2.1

Just back up your stuff (I like to use SSH and copy the folders with SMS, recent calls and notes) to my Mac, restore via iTunes (let it download 2.2). Then after your iPhone is done and iTunes says it can't activate it, run QuickPwn 2.2. You can then copy back the few files over to the iPhone again so you have your SMS, recent calls and notes back, music, calendar and contacts are easily synced via iTunes.

UPDATE:

Performance on the iPhone is outstanding. On 2.1 (jailbroken) it was terribly slow, unresponsive and buggy. Now it's running very smooth, no lag and it's faster than fw 1.1.4.
