So his inside source didn't say anything about MMS (which means it's not a talking point which means it's not there) and all other reports say it won't be there. Hmmm two and two together...

What "other reports" are you referring to that state MMS will NOT be included? I have not heard of any report that states that, but have heard of at least one report (Boy Genius) that says MMS will be included in the 3.0 update.

In other words...
-Poorly implemented Copy and Paste (Check)
-Low framerate, ****** video recording (Check)
-Poorly implemented MMS (Check)
-Battery draining, resource hogging background apps (Check)

I appreciate the attempt and have jailbroken every iPhone version, but the items you've mentioned are like many other smartphones: the feature is added to impress some geeks with your spec list, but they aren't implemented well.

These last two I do give you as an actual benefit, but the setup needs to be slicker. For starters, folder and icon organization needs to have an option to be done via the iTunes to make it quick and simple
-Awesome themes and customization (Check)
-Folders to organize so that you don't have a 9 page jumble of random apps (Check)

so here's my question. Why say video is impossible when its not? The iphone is obviously capable of using the camera as a video recorder, granted the implementations I've seen are not the best, but also not bad. It's a damn cell phone, it shouldn't have a high frame rate for video recording. If you want that go duct tape your phone to your camcorder.

I'd echo one of the other gentlemen earlier about implementing what the every phone has no, but not the iphone... and that is voice dialing. Seems like the biggest overlooked feature I can think of.

No matter what they do next, people will complain. Am I the only person who is yawning at 3.0? Granted, Im sure it will be cool and have some neat stuff, but I'm not that excited.

I'm more excited for the features that will put it up to speed with the Palm Pre.
The Pre is fast because of the HW, and to a lesser extent its simple apps. While Apple can update the OS to be faster, you'll have to wait until the iPhone HW, which I expect to be a dual-core ARM with Nvidia's Tegra. That will blow away the Pre, which is just hyperbole at this time and is only comparing itself to the current iPhone.

so here's my question. Why say video is impossible when its not?
What part of my post stated it was impossible? I wasn't even obscure in my verbage by saying "it wouldn't work" and then not explaining what I meant by it/ I clearly stated that it would be "-Low framerate [...] video recording."

I'd echo one of the other gentlemen earlier about implementing what the every phone has no, but not the iphone... and that is voice dialing. Seems like the biggest overlooked feature I can think of.
Voice dialing seems very overlooked, to me as well. Btu how would Apple implement it? I'd think you'd have to be holding down a physical button to enact it. Holding down a virtual button defeats the purpose. You can't even enable it on Apple's headphones with mic as your finger can easily cover the mic hole when pressing the center. The only options are the Home, Sleep and volume buttons on the device. None of which seem very user friendly.

So from this rumor it sounds as if the 3rd gen iPhone won't be a major leap in hardware that we all expect.

It won't be a hardware release. This isn't a new iPhone, it's new software for existing iPhones.

In other words...
-Poorly implemented Copy and Paste (Check)
-Low framerate, ****** video recording (Check)
-Poorly implemented MMS (Check)
-Battery draining, resource hogging background apps (Check)

The copy and paste isn't fantastic but it is there and it didn't take two years+ for it to be implemented.

The low framrate is due to Apple's camera, not the video recording software, but then again at least it is there and didn't take two years+ to be implemented.

Poorly implemented MMS? MMS on jailbroken iPhones works well. The poorly implemented MMS is AT&T's program to have to go to a website and enter a cryptic id to access pics.

Battery draining and resource hogging? Oh i forgot to mention that you can shut down the application by terminating it so that when you are done using it, the memory shifts back to how it was before you ran it in the background. That way if memory is too low you can manage it. Simple as that.

It just boggles my mind that the iPhone is capable of so much, yet Apple is taking baby steps to implement things on to it. It's almost as if they have a whole game plan written out to keep us talking about it.

In a thread about iPhones, let's link to a flash based video that I cannot watch on my damn iPhone. Brilliant.

Just had the same problem myself now going to have to actually get up. Move across the room to watch the video on my iMac. I'm so lazy.

Hey guys, it doesn't mean video recording won't be a feature of the next iPhone.

It means currently there are problems with current iPhones and video recording won't be there (or will be hidden) on these iPhones. But the next one might as well have it ;)

These are my 2 cents.

Hold off till may/june time, chances are that history will repeat itself.

Just use a crappy phone you have lying around in the meantime :)

Yeah guess I'll have to, saying that my Nokia 6120c is quite a nice phone, but only for use as a phone, for anything else it's not as elegant as Apples iPhone.

I would like to see a front mounted camera and iChat on there, but I'm guessing that's gonna be a little while longer yet (plus having Skype on there would be nice, my current phone has skype but 3s 3G coverage is awful so it rarely works).

Agree on that. I just don't get the need or want for MMS at ALL. Seriously, e-mail works. So you have to send a pic that's so important it can't wait for your friend without phone e-mail access to get home and look at it? LOL.

C&P would be OK, but the only thing I'd really like to see is a real GPS app, whether it be built in or finally an "allowable" add on app.

Email works if the person receiving the image has email on their phone, not all mobile phone users have an iPhone. Granted I've used MMS about 20 times over the past 5 years but having the option would be beneficial to a great many users, plus it gives the network carriers something to milk more money out of their users :)

Double tapping to select a word. It will be interesting to see how that affects zooming in Safari.

Well, let's try thinking like Apple.

The magnifier only appears in text fields in which you can modify; the proposed method makes use of the magnify feature. Therefore you will not be able to copy text from web pages.

The part that irks me the most is when Apple announces new features (to 3.0 that is, otherwise old features to any other smartphone) it will be to thunderous applause when instead it should be met with contemptuous silence. There is no need to encourage them.

I also feel Apple is taking the wrong stance with regard to MMS as well. Someone still needs to explain to me what exactly makes it an "outdated" technology anyways, but I think it can have a bright future. People say that as phones increasingly have smartphone features, email will replace MMS. I think MMS itself can instead be expanded to full email directly to a mobile device with full attachments - pictures, files, documents, etc. - especially as faster data networks become standard.

My apologies about the "No MMS" misinformation, there was a lot of yelling (as you could tell from that video) and I thought he said no to MMS. Sorry y'all! I would have clarified this earlier, but I had to run some errands around Austin, and with SXSW, it's a whole bunch of craziness right now.

Double tapping to select a word. It will be interesting to see how that affects zooming in Safari.

Currently in Safari, double tapping on a input text field does not zoom. So this gesture is not already overloaded for editable text.

But this means that this cut & paste user interface method can't work the same for non-editable text in web or scrollviews, because the gesture is already taken for zooming.

But, even if true, this will not be the big feature in 3.0. Something like multi-resolution and Snow Leopard with non-homogeneous multi-core Grand Central support across all platforms and devices would be far more interesting.

imco

I like the whole idea of cut and paste, although im not quite sure how much i will use it personally.

It's not a hardware limitation in that the phone can't record video. It's a hardware limitation, because the phone can only write to each block a certain number of times and the blocks would be used too rapidly if a video recorder were made available. Your phone will probably die before the phone of someone who didn't jailbreak and install a video recording app.

Modern drives have load balancing features that write to different memory blocks each time in order to wear out the drive as evenly as possible. So as drives get bigger, this will be less of an issue. Maybe we'll see it supported in next year's revision.
