Do you guys honestly think Apple is going to hold a press conference/news event to announce JUST copy & paste? Maybe even a new folder structure, and that's it?

Even if Apple also announces the rumored Premium App Store too, it would still be a lame-duck even that would lower Apple's stock.

They wouldn't do that. Apple will announce some other features. Part of the reason they are doing this is to get potential phone switchers who's contracts are up to "hold off" until the summer.

I know I am.

Agree on that. I just don't get the need or want for MMS at ALL. Seriously, e-mail works. So you have to send a pic that's so important it can't wait for your friend without phone e-mail access to get home and look at it? LOL.

C&P would be OK, but the only thing I'd really like to see is a real GPS app, whether it be built in or finally an "allowable" add on app.

I don't want to have to collect all of my friends' emails. It's way more convenient to be able to just send it to the phone number, and they can do what they want with it.

The fact of the matter is, it's a useful feature that has been a standard on camera phones for a while now, and it's pathetic to think the world's most advanced smart phone can't even do it.

Just ****ing bring it to the iPhone already you jerk offs.

Kevin Rose dd not say that MMS was not in the release.

When the audience started firing questions about specific features at him he said that he didn't know about MMS and that he'd been told that this release would wipe away all of the Pre's advantages.

Take 3 minutes and watch the video that Arn posted on the front page.

I'm more than happy with just Copy and Paste, but i dont see the need for "3.0", why not just go to "2.3"?

I'm glad there will be no MMS, its such a dated way of sending images, you have unlimited data with the iPhone for crying out loud (well at least here in the UK) so why the need for MMS when you can send images by email or upload to twitpic or flickr?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I'm actually kind of disappointed... It's kind of fun listening to everyone whine about copy and paste. What will people complain about now?

I will be complaining about SMS until they sort out the way they are displayed, that 'chat' format is foul, a more email like system would be excellent so i can forward messages and delete certain texts instead of wiping the whole convo!

I got tired of waiting so I just went ahead and JailBroke it. Amazing stuff!

-Copy and Paste (Check)
-Video Recording (Check)
-MMS (Check)
-Apps run in the Background, such as IM or Pandora (Check)
-Awesome themes and customization (Check)
-Folders to organize so that you don't have a 9 page jumble of random apps (Check)

Apple rocks for inventing the iPhone but the software development team is not taking advantage of its capabilities. The Palm Pre was very attractive until I went ahead and jailbroke it.

To anyway who says Jailbreaking doesn't count, yes it does because it is easy to do, DOES NOT SLOW THE iPhone DOWN (no matter what anyone says.. there is even video to prove it is just as fast), and it allows for almost endless possibilities.

In other words...
-Poorly implemented Copy and Paste (Check)
-Low framerate, ****** video recording (Check)
-Poorly implemented MMS (Check)
-Battery draining, resource hogging background apps (Check)

I appreciate the attempt and have jailbroken every iPhone version, but the items you've mentioned are like many other smartphones: the feature is added to impress some geeks with your spec list, but they aren't implemented well.

These last two I do give you as an actual benefit, but the setup needs to be slicker. For starters, folder and icon organization needs to have an option to be done via the iTunes to make it quick and simple

Of course! That's rather obvious.

Recently Kevin's been a lot more conservative in what he says because his previous rumors have been false. And he always prefaces his remarks with "it could be false."

I wish people wouldn't believe what everyone else says as if it's truth. The people telling us about the rumor certainly don't say so. And whose to say that Apple doesn't feed false info to everyone to stir up the hype?

As for the things "missing" on the iPhone, if you don't like it, please stop complaining. It's as if someone forced you to get an iPhone. No one did! And anyone who actually thought through how big implementing copy/paste is would know that it's not going to be added to .X update because of potential gesture conflicts.

Anyway, here's to Tuesday!

Also confirmed no video due to a hardware limitation with the NAND memory that Apple uses. The amount of writing and IO to the memory could cause issue with the phone hardware, so it's out of the question.

Would Mr. Rose like to tell us how jailbreaking can get around this "hardware limitation"?

If a jailbreak allows me to record video, I don't see why Apple can't implement this on the current iPhone.

Apple may not include video recording in 3.0, but it is certainly possible to do.

Hardware limitation my ass.

Don

Why are you okay with 2.3 but not 3.0? Why not 2.2.2? Why even use a point system?

Apple moves it's version based on the level of change they are doing (or at least the level of change they want you to think they are doing). I am hoping that v3.0 will be the first public release of a SnowLeopard-based OS.

WHo said there will be no MMS?

It's not a hardware limitation in that the phone can't record video. It's a hardware limitation, because the phone can only write to each block a certain number of times and the blocks would be used too rapidly if a video recorder were made available. Your phone will probably die before the phone of someone who didn't jailbreak and install a video recording app.

WHo said there will be no MMS?

Kevin Rose. It's part of the topic at hand. Did you not read any of the thread, or even the original post?

You are correct in that it's technically possible to record video on the iPhone, but Apple has never been about what was technically possible, but was is technically feasible. It' just not a viable option for the current HW and OS. The resources are just too severe to have H.264 recording at a decent framerate. Check out the jailbroken recording apps, they suck big hairy monkey balls.

"iPhone 3.0 Copy and Paste Described
Sunday March 15, 2009 03:34 PM EST; Category: iPhone
Written by Arnold Kim
During a live taping of Diggnation, Kevin Rose revealed details about the expected "Copy and Paste" functionality coming in iPhone 3.0. World of Apple reports on the event with a link to a video of the moment (warning: strong language).

According to Rose, to invoke Copy and Paste, you simply double tap on the word, and a magnifier bubble will appear with two quotes that you can drag around your selection. Once you make your selection, you can copy, paste or cut. Rose has been accurate in the past with details about upcoming Apple product revisions. As well, we have also heard that Copy and Paste will be arriving in 3.0 alongside a much improved homepage/springboard with the ability to organize in categories.

Apple will be revealing iPhone 3.0 in detail on Tuesday, March 17th at a special media event."
So the absence of MMS being mentioned in the article means that it won't be included?

Last night I attended the Live Diggnation event in Austin, Texas at SXSW, where Kevin Rose confirmed through his sources that iPhone 3.0 would have Copy and Paste.

He said it worked like this... you would press and hold a word and a Magnifier type bubble would appear with quotes around the word. Move the quotes around what you want selected and then you can press Copy.

Also confirmed no MMS for this release.

Confirmed that there would be no background apps, but he says that what Apple has coming will wipe away any advantages that Palm has touted with its Pre handheld.

Also confirmed no video due to a hardware limitation with the NAND memory that Apple uses. The amount of writing and IO to the memory could cause issue with the phone hardware, so it's out of the question.

You can see this all on the Diggnation that will air next week.

This is the first post in the thread! POST #1
The freaking first post!

As already stated, if you watch the 3 minute clip from Austin where Kevin discusses copy & paste- when asked about MMS he replied, "I don't know anything about MMS."

False dichotomy. i think he gets lots a rumors fed to him, that he is a LOUSY filter (see dual battery iphone) and that he will spout out what he hears for more attention to his sites etc.. since what does he have to lose? if he picks C & p and apple does not announce it on tues, people will still post about his rumors even after being wrong about the iphone before, pretty darn badly.

But, Tues we will see i agree with that.

I predict:

copy and paste

AND

better battery life!

I am so starting a rumor site..

I would like to draw attention to your "I predict" That is the point. You are predicting.

Kevin Rose has a track record, albeit an arguable rocky one. He obviously has sources or a source that has information, that is obvious by his correct information regarding the nanos and iTunes 8.

Now you can start a prediction site. Feel free. But those of us that have been on MacRumors for some time realize that this is a rumor sight and the management does its best to provide us with good information--all under the context that this is a Rumor sight.

To not post this on the front page would devoid the site of its purpose. You are correct that anyone could "predict" copy and paste, but not everyone can say so with potential validity from a source.

I'm really eager to see how the new OS looks and performs.
I hardly have any bugs with my 3G. Odd issue with CPU-intensive apps crashing, as usual, but that's it.
Just like OS X, it's reliable.
Updates to functionality, however, are always welcome.

Good news on the iphone front. Is it just me or are those guys (Kevin Rose and the other guy) super annoying? Every time I see them talking I want to slap them both-damn I hate how the internet empowers people into demi-celebs.

I have a feeling this is the big one!!!!!

copy and paste hopefully is just the start, I can see many more features being added.
now how to get out of this 02 contract and get the new iphone.......

Go watch the video of what Kevin said, where he says "I didn't hear about MMS" He didn't say "No MMS"

So his inside source didn't say anything about MMS (which means it's not a talking point which means it's not there) and all other reports say it won't be there. Hmmm two and two together...

I'm more excited for the features that will put it up to speed with the Palm Pre. Anyone else concur? Anyhow, I'm rendering my screen-cap now so I can put this on YouTube and get a bazillion-****ing-hits (quote by Alex Albrecht).:D
