Native Hulu built in? :p

You know I actually wrote Hulu about if they were interested in an iPhone app and they gave this reply...

Hi,

We're focused on the free streaming experience on the computer today, but our
overall mission at Hulu is to help people find and enjoy great content when, where
and how they want. That means we’re continually listening to user feedback and
evaluating new technologies to develop new experiences for users to enjoy Hulu.

Thanks,

Arash

I like the whole idea of cut and paste, although im not quite sure how much i will use it personally.

I don't actually use it that often. Maybe a couple times a week. But when I do, it saves me a massive amount of time, not having to rewrite paragraphs or switch back and forth between applications a hundred times to get it all.

Kinda like a seatbelt. You rarely need them, but when you do, it's a pretty big deal.

MMS & App Prices

There are two seemingly unrelated sets of people that frequently post about the iPhone that catch my interest:

  • people so cheap that a 99 cent app is 'too expensive'
  • people desperate for MMS to be supported

I would love to see a Venn diagram of how these sets overlap. Anybody caught in the intersection of the two needs to do some soul searching.

I'd wet my pants...

So with the video thing... If it's a hardware limitation explain this. [It's from 2007. I'd assume there are better apps for that now.

Also, why can't it just use the Flash chip as RAM? I'm assuming it's not as high quality memory as RAM, but wouldn't it be good enough for video capture?

NAND has a limited number of read/write cycles. it would kill the iPhone to use the NAND memory as RAM.

umm.. i still don't get why jail-broken iphone can do video just fine and the professionals at Apple cant do the same thing

Apple likes to do things in fun and quality ways, i dont think they want video on their cellphone until its possible for it not to look like cellphone footage (aka, complete crap).

It's not just the limited write cycles (which might be what's stopping them from offering video recording), but NAND Flash is not random access as is needed for a RAM equivalent.

NAND must be read out in something like 4K pages, and erased/reprogrammed in 256K blocks. So it's very much more useful as a disk drive equivalent.

so they've finally done copy and paste, still no mms, video and background apps though.

If this is v3, whats the extra's better google maps where most of the decent features don't work in most of the UK. Proper GPS navigation? Maybe they've added a few codecs for better media support - nah not going to happen anytime soon.
Flash - don't want that so thats not a biggy.

Hang on I forgot the push notifications - thats a biggy so thats what will make it v3

If this is all we're getting this is v2.5 not a 3.

hah i guess you could say that, they do like to do things their own little strange ways... it would just be nice to have it to record a good fight or something every once in a while.. dont need top quality stuff for that, but oh well

Right. So for this major revision release the long awaited copy and opaste has arrived. Marvellous. Us jailbreakers have had this for ages.

Also confirmed no MMS for this release

Us jailbreakers have had this for ages.

Confirmed that there would be no background apps, but he says that what Apple has coming will wipe away any advantages that Palm has touted with its Pre handheld.

I smell a RDF delivered by the medium of hearsay.

Also confirmed no video due to a hardware limitation with the NAND memory that Apple uses. The amount of writing and IO to the memory could cause issue with the phone hardware, so it's out of the question.

I knew I was the lucky one! When I jailbroke my iPhone, I actually got a hardware upgrade pumped down the USB cable as well, resulting in my being able to shoot perfectly good video with my iPhone 3G. Who'da thunk it? A hardware upgrade via USB?!

Oh wait, that was someone talking complete bollocks again. I don't care if it was an Apple marketing gimp, Kevin Rose, some random fanboy or whoever, the iPhone is perfectly capable of shooting video and remaining stable. These so called authorities would do well to actually research that which they claim to have knowledge about.

The Pre is fast because of the HW, and to a lesser extent its simple apps. While Apple can update the OS to be faster, you'll have to wait until the iPhone HW, which I expect to be a dual-core ARM with Nvidia's Tegra. That will blow away the Pre, which is just hyperbole at this time and is only comparing itself to the current iPhone.

How do we know the Pre is fast?
The iPhone looks pretty damn fast in the commercials too ;)

Oh, so that is why they waited until they had the perfect 2.0 MP camera so that the pictures were of the highest quality and not cellphone quality aka "complete crap"..

copy and paste? that's it? lame.

I don't care about c/p. I want a phone that doesn't lag and is more stable.

I swear if Copy Paste is the only new thing in 3.0, I'll.....I'll.....I'lll GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really don't think Apple is going to show EVERYTHING that 3.0 holds in store on Tuesday. I think they will show off some good stuff like copy paste but that there will be things that they do not show that will be revealed in June when the new hardware comes out. Hence the event said it is a PREVIEW!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if video capture is exclusive to the new hardware and it will come with MobileMe and YouTube upload!

What I really want is Push and a little easing up on the SDK rules so we can get apps like real GPS etc. and a tweaked UI for the home screen and MMS and some little things like text forwarding etc.

P.S. If he is right about the copy paste and double tap a word, that means unless something changes you won't be able to use it in Safari :(

Well, I would ****ing hope so, these the devs making these C&P apps dont really have full access to the OS. If they did, I'm damn sure there would have been perfect C&P solutions a long time ago.

Also, since when is video recording not considered a 'basic feature'? It's been on every single ****** cell phone Ive owned for years. It humors me how so many here apologize for Apple, with some weird explanation of technical limitations that prevent video recording on the phone. Come on guys. Stop setting your standards so low when it comes to Apple.

Apple provided an explanation as to why it cant record. No other phones use the NAND memory so its perfectly reasonalbe that Apple doesnt want to **** up your phone!

Wow. Where does this conjecture come from and on what is it based?!

The Cycorder app available free to iPhone jailbreakers shoots the best quality video I've seen from a mobile device. End of. Yes it's crap in low light levels, but quelle surprise, that's because there's no light on the iPhone. Cycorder shoots in Motion JPEG resulting in high quality video with relatively small file sizes. There are other apps out there which are paid apps with added functionailty too.

Please, at risk of sounding rude if you're going to offer an opinion, make it an informed one or not at all.

Irony at its best. ;)

You might want to familiarize yourself with the properties of NAND flash memory (specifically write endurance) before barking up that tree. They didn't say video recording was impossible (we've had crappy Cycorder videos for a long time now, right?) but rather, that it could cause issues with the iPhone's memory.

Watch The Video!!!

I think a lot of you should go re-watch the video.

He NEVER SAYS no MMS. Someone shouts it out and he says...

"I didn't hear about MMS, I didn't hear anything about that, so I don't know if it's coming."

Why is everyone freaking out already about MMS......again. There is no confirmation here.

The quote that gets my attention is the one "his source" said...

"Copy & Paste, and brings us up to speed with all the Palm Pre stuff."

Well if thats true we will see MMS, Full Bluetooth functionality (File Transfer/A2DP), some sort of management of apps and background processes coming to 3.0.

That gets me excited. I also expect to see some partners brought up on stage to introduce or preview some new games (maybe premium content?).

You can still tell that cycorder videos are made on a cell phone.....

That was the only thing i was trying to say
