That's a little my thought too, although you are wrong with Apple's strategy.
Apple didn't release an iPhone just to make it look sleek and sexy so all the girls can get it, it's a revolutionary phone and is by far not obsolete!

I didn't make any comment as to Apple's strategy, except that the iPhone is not targeted to the blue & pink iPod nano toting demo.

I completely agree. This is the point I was making in my comment.

Apple may be holding off on background apps until hardware 3.0 in June. Apple may still view the current iPhone hardware as being technically impossible to have background apps for. This could also give good reason for first generation iPhone owners to upgrade.

This talk about NAND flash needing to being able to write to hardware too many times seems like nonsense considering Apple offers a flash option on the MBP's. This again could seem like something that has more to do with the lousy camera in the current iPhones and should be available in hardware 3.0 should Apple increase the quality of the camera.

I don't know what features that would bring it up with the pre (except system-wide spotlight) because the thing that have people amazed by the pre is really the GUI. I hope Apple really upgrades the UI so it looks as graphically impressive as the pre. The Pre has been fortunate as this year provides a huge technological jump in processors not seen since the original iPhone.

Lastly, things like MMS may not be shown on Tuesday because Apple may not deem it important enough. What I would look for besides a UI overhaul, would be for developers to get deeper access to the hardware. I expect full access to the camera and Bluetooth.

You might want to familiarize yourself with the properties of NAND flash memory (specifically write endurance) before barking up that tree. They didn't say video recording was impossible (we've had crappy Cycorder videos for a long time now, right?) but rather, that it could cause issues with the iPhone's memory.

Especially with the version of NAND that Apple uses in the iPhone, which only has a maximum of 5,000 write cycles. (That's why they can afford putting it in.) It doesn't have the 100,000 cycle endurance of other kinds of flash chips.

Whew I'm safe!!! Mine's red. :p:D

I think Apple is trying to appeal to everyone but I hope they don't leave off the "Pro" features like they have been (wink wink cough cough MacBook Pro) with recent products.

Another thought I have,
Maybe the next iPhone will have more processor and ram so Apple will allow it to run as many apps as you want in the background.
While iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, and iPod touch users can still run apps in the background but at a limited number do to not as much hardware and processor as the possible future iPhone may have.

OH! I get it. Sorry about that. I thought you were saying that's the category the iPhone was at, my mistake.

Hmmm I had forgotten that. If you sync/plug in the iPhone 4 times a day everyday the chip will only last a maximum of 3.4 years. Very interesting. I'm not saying I sync that much but that kind of puts into perspective that the iPhone isn't designed to be long lasting.

I think as flash memory and the technologies associated with it continue to drop we'll see an increase in both size and quality of the chips used in Apple products.

Also confirmed no video due to a hardware limitation with the NAND memory that Apple uses. The amount of writing and IO to the memory could cause issue with the phone hardware, so it's out of the question.

Does this imply that jailbroken solutions for video recording, like Cycorder, would be harmful to our phone hardware? (Honest question, because I'd rather not risk using Cycorder if this were truly the case).

I can't wait till there is copy and paste so I don't ever have to hear you f+cking people complain about it ever again! Or read another comment like, my sidekick has had copy and paste since 1995. Please let this rumor be true so I can here people complain about something new.

That's more like it - this is the kind of stuff I'm expecting in 3.0, improved access to the device hardware, perhaps some kind of limited multitasking. One of the problems I thought there was with Copy/Paste was that applications are siloed so they can't talk to each other. If 3.0 has copy/paste then I'm expecting apple has come up with an API to allow apps to interact securely.

Some new kind of presentation ... possible, but I'm hoping 3.0 is a developer-centric release.

There are two seemingly unrelated sets of people that frequently post about the iPhone that catch my interest:

  • people so cheap that a 99 cent app is 'too expensive'
  • people desperate for MMS to be supported

I would love to see a Venn diagram of how these sets overlap. Anybody caught in the intersection of the two needs to do some soul searching.

Well said. I very valid observation! I'd take it a step further and say that those that can't find anything better to do than spend their entire time whining and moaning about the lack of <insert_insignificant_feature_here> really need to get laid. It's a phone. Your lungs aren't dependent on MMS ... it's oxygen. Let's get some perspective here. Too much pent up sexual frustration me thinks.

actualy a lot of businesses use the iphone and are VERY happy with it.. you like the other smart phones so much? go get one!
and you might want to change your profile quote thing cuz 1 20 2009 already came around and a bigger mistake happened so yes now u can start praying:eek:

and a lot of business don't use it because you can't store and edit documents, spreadsheets, etc.

and yeah, the past 8 years have been a blast. but hey, at last our new president will allow dissenting voices like yours to be heard and considered.

The complaining will never stop. Embrace the fact that there is always something that can make the iPhone / iPod touch / Mac / OS X / [Insert other Apple Product here] better, this way we can always look forward to something new.

This is going to be about the developers otherwise they would have waited until WWDC. the whole reason for this is that there is going to be more additional features to the SDK that they want developers to prepare for when 3.0 is launched. The 2.0 event last year was not really intended for customers but to get developers on board. That doesn't mean though that we can't get some fun out of it ourselves. That's why MMS or tethering are not likely to be announced on Tuesday. This is useless for developers.

LMAO for real.. if you people hate apple so much and everything they do sucks so bad then how about you all switch to pcs and other smart phones then delete your accounts on this apple fan site and stop complaining:cool::D

This site isn't full of Apple fanboys and fangirls, even though I am one.
A bunch of us are neutral and I know of several that are PC fans.

im pretty sure theres apps that let you edit stuff.. espcialy spreadsheets i use those a lot!

Well i cant say they were a blast but they were close:D
and bush never stopped me from speaking out.... all the good things about him

So I like my iPhone 3G and all but the more I keep reading about background apps and such I feel like I got ripped off and feel that they falsely advertised the iPhone 3G. I mean we saw background apps work during the key note. If we need a new model for background apps I feel apple should swap with me.

Maybe I'm not understanding the situation but it been almost a year now and the iphone 3G still doesn't work as good as it did on Keynote day!

Through remote access we can edit certain things, but those are apps you have to pay for.
We want something that will at least let us sync or drag files so we can edit them.
And we want to be able to create documents other than .txt that we can drag to our computer.
Although, then in 3.0 Apple would also have to enable disk access like they have for all the other iPods.

ok true.. but everyone on here has at least one apple product that they are talking about.. and on this post its the iphone... then people bring up the copy and paste feature on macs 25 years ago and blah blah blah
im just saying it full of complaints about how horrible apple and the iphone is pretty much and how their stupid and cant do anything right and some mention their other phones and stufff so people should just switch to what they like better and stop complaining about it.. especialy cuz there complaints arent going to get them those features

I personally don't think MMS a feature of particular importance. Idem, tethering; streaming (iPhone camera is no RED. Bad as it is, it could altogether not exist as well) and the like.
Copy-and-Paste (system-wide), however, would be of undeniable benefit to many of us. So would backgrounding (or multitasking); a launcher (that would enable one to trigger applications installed, but not showing among the ones occupying the desktop). And a few more, as listed below:

- Better memory management (if possible to attain through firmware modifications alone)

- A mobile version of iWork (somewhat similar to SoftMaker for PocketPeeCees)

- Haptic feedback (proven, a posteriori, not to require a hardware update! N.B.: I've installed an extension called "Realistic Haptic" (or similar) through a jailbreak, and am very reluctant to get rid of it. It does make typing a yet greater experience than it otherwise is).

- A "Find"command in all applications where relevant (such as Safari; Mail.app, etc.)

- Global search utility, akin to Spotlight

- Extended functionality in applications like Safari, Mail, etc., such as marking (read, unread, flag, unflag, etc.) property for email in the list view and "Open in the current - or a new - Window" option in Safari.

- Less obvious compression of screenshots

- Encryption support for Safari bookmarks collection of choice

- Support for, indeed, bluetooth keyboard and other peripherals (unless impossible without hardware modifications).

- …and quite a few more features.

I'm pretty sure the person that mentioned copy/paste on Mac back in 1983 was just being a smartarse.
And did you ever consider that people may not switch phone or computers because they have faith in the product and it's future updates?

well there were no public ADVERTISEMENTS for the iphone showing actual background work
on the keynote yes.. but if you listened to the keynote not just look at the pictures you would here steve jobs say that they are working on it and its not going to be on for a while.... yes they said it would be on in september but... well you cant always trust deadlines, dont be discouraged itll get here
