Does "check for Updates" act as a sync? I'm wondering if I can update the OS (Iphone 1st gen) off my work Mac today which is NOT the computer I normally sync with.

Thanks.

It should find the update... but you wont be able to back up your iPhone before installing it.

I just tried it, only asks to install 2.2.1. no 3.0 yet...:(

I think that would mean, erasing all your media (music, videos etc.) as far as I know. You're better off waiting until you get home.

but does it do that already? Usually when you install new firmware it erases the phone... So technically you could install it on another computer, and then take it home to resync all you data.

May be true, yeah. Been a while since I've updated the software, so my memory's dodgy. I still think you're better off being patient. ;)

I have (had) a dream....

I had a dream..... a dream where I was sitting at my Mac this morning, drinking my coffee and downloading 3.0. I then played with the compass as I drove into work....

None of this looks like it is going to happen now....

Apple has destroyed my dreams and crushed my spirit.

The rage I feel is EPIC AND OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!

:p

im ready for apple to be like, "nope your not getting 3.0". u have to buy a whole new iphone/ipod. 3.0 is much to advanced for those "old" devices. thanks!, have a wonderful day.

I'd be updating it as soon as I can see 3.0 is available. If I have to resync when I get home, who cares! There is nothing on my Iphone I couldnt re-download from my home computer. Plus iTunes runs a back up of the iPhone just before it installs the update too.

Sorry but you won't be playing with any compass until you buy a 3G S :-(
There does seem to be alot of confusion as to what the 3.0 can and cannot do on the older iPhones... Just don't riot ok guys?

This reminds me ... my friend recently bought a 13" MBP and she got the 8GB iPod Touch with it as part of the Back to School promotion. I noticed the headphone jack is not flush with the case on the bottom.

Slightly off topic, sorry - but didn't they change this to make em all flush - or am I thinking iPhone only? I'm just wondering if the model iPod Touch she got will be able to run 3.0
