I have yet to see a 3G in the wild, I've seen plenty of 1st gens. I guess people are still stuck on the Nokia craze, that or they just don't care. Or I'm not looking in the right areas.

Signal strength

Hey all

Just wondering if anyone else is noticing poor reception with their iPhone?? I live in Sydney metro and reception on my previous phone was always great - now Im lucky to get 2-3 bars in my house. This is just an early notice as I only bought my iphone today. It doesnt seem to affect the call quality though, Its still quite clear.

P.S to all of you wondering about when shops are getting the next load of iphones in the sales assistant told me today (at a vodafone store) they took a fresh shipment yesterday with both 8 and 16 gig models

im on to you.

in regards to optus, what they dont know wont hurt them

I don't think Optus has unlimited data, do they? They don't even have unlimited ADSL plans.

Anyone know if you can get an iPhone with the unlimited voice plans though?

you mean on that liberty thing? or whateve rits called.
most probably.
best just to ask optus.

Has anyone tried tethering their iphone with their laptop? i tried but couldnt get it to work.

I have resigned myself to not getting an iphone for a while.

I can't find a prepaid 16GB in NW Sydney and I am over ringing the local telstra and DSE stores for them to tell me in an irritated, tone, that there is none in stock and no we don't know when they are coming. You can almost hear them say Look you loser its only a phone, get a grip.

The thing is that I am starting to get over it, I am asking myself if I really do want one now.

I tried one in Dick Smiths and when I pressed the maps icon it took three presses for it to open up. I read all about the laggy problems and other bugs so I reckon its better to wait anyway. It seems to need a software update and the next build will be better, as they always are.

If getting something is really this hard then I think I'll stick with my Nokia 6280 on my basic Three plan.

I am giving up looking for one until I can walk into a shop and buy one without any pressure.

Anyway I think I'll wait for this new PDA thingy which seems to be just around the corner.

Then I won't be able to get one of those of course.

Nah, this is all too hard, its just not worth it.

Hmm so many things to reply to...

iPhones in the wild:
Not really in the wild, but half my office have either a 2G or 3G. I saw one guy on the street, he caught me looking and I think he thought I was jealous. Little did he know I had the exact some one in my pocket..

Calibrating battery:
Basically just charge it full, use it til it's empty, then completely recharge again. More info here.

Tethering on Optus:
I'd be careful, they usually have limits in their Fair Go policy thing. I remember when I was back in school they had an "Unlimited Txt Message" offer for a month, I racked up about 3000 or so and they said that it only covered 2000, as anything more than that was considered "excessive use" and voided the offer.

Lagging phones:
Never noticed any lag loading maps or other apps for that matter. Optus have a few low speed areas but in general everything works great. I've had troubles with some downloaded apps after syncing, but that's solved by reinstalling the apps (only a few small ones).

Checkout my blog http://mattgillard.wordpress.com/2008/07/20/iphone-3g-madness/ - I did some tests and its not something that you need to be worried about.

I'm not yet convinced that it's NOTHING to worry about.
There are some Australians (myself included!) that have been reporting similar problems here - http://forums.mactalk.com.au/47/53900-merged-3g-iphone-reception-problems-worldwide.html

I'm concerned that battery life might be affected, given that with a low signal the phone changes between 2/3g often.

Also there are many reports of people not receiving signal in areas which are known to have good coverage on other 3g phones. I think this is only a case in areas where you have marginal signal, and few cell towers. (Almost no-one in sydney/melbourne report issues, and pretty much no-one on Telstra.)

Given that it's a worldwide issue I suspect that there is an issue with the iPhone, but as to if it's hardware or software, i have no idea.
It could be a carrier issue, but then many carriers around the world are having the same problmes, and other phones have been shown to work on these networks without issues, so i'm doubtful.
(check the apple iphone discussions for a huge thread, or howard forums.)

edit- also nice blog, read well.

Great info - Thanks alot :) After using my iphone all day today at work (close to CBD in Sydney) I found that the low signal strength didnt have much affect on call quality which is good but dam did it chew up the battery power. I maybe spent a total of an hour on the phone and just a few sms's throughout the day and it almost wiped out half the battery life. Admittingly its the first day of using it so Im sure battery life may improve once I have ran it down to empty and recharged again

Thanks again for the blog link - it was a good read :)

got my iPhone back....

and im going to strangle optus...
:D

its not working,
stuck in DFU.

Hahahahaha... :D

I'm expecting mine to arrive tomorrow.... I just hope mine isn't defective, broken or scratched....

im going to go and commit genocide...
i mean, have Optus staff ever done anything for us?

Anyone, no, good with that, ok.

Any suggestions?

I might join you.

I just got a letter from Optus to say that they are unable to offer me a connection of an Optus mobile and/or telephone service.

Do you think they'll appreciate the irony if I use the new connection I got on Friday to ask why I was refused a connection? :)
