I'm pretty disappointed. I shell out $120+ a month for service with AT&T, but I'm not eligible for an upgrade until March 2010... otherwise, it's going to cost me $599 to get the new iPhone... I wish Apple had made it so iPhone could be used on any carrier :(

READ,
you signed a contract, right? Nowhere in that contract was mentioned that you are eligable to upgrade to the next iPhone before the contract runs out.

I don't understand how people simply "expect" this kinda stuff...

...Does anyone else think that when you swipe over to the spotlight page, there should be something more visually than just a search bar, keyboard, and black background. It seems so unpolished. Why not have a blue spotlight icon fade into the background or something? ...

totally agree.... thinking that everytime i open it!

This, again?

2-year contract, you signed it. iPhone 3G bought with subsidized pricing, you did it. AT&T has a lot of things wrong when it comes to the iPhone, but not letting you upgrade to the iPhone 3G S isn't one of those things. ANY OTHER phone you buy from AT&T does not let you upgrade earlier than your 2-year contract allows. Why should AT&T have to take a bath on your subsidy being paid back so that you can have the "latest and greatest"?

Like I said, AT&T's not always right, but in this case, they are 100%.

Ok, I am fully aware that this is nitpicking at its finest, but I'm curious to see if I am the only one out there who thinks this.

I know this is nitpicking, and I might have OCD, but it generally bothers me. Im I the only one?
I feel the simpler the better.

I don't understand how this will happen(atleast to me).

UPS says my phone will arrive to me tomorrow(the 17th).

The last update was it departing Shenzhen, China yesterday at 3:30 PM.

There's no way it will make it to my door tomorrow.

Unlock

Regarding the unlocked status:

Since there was no word from the dev team regarding any form of unlock, my guess would be that they are using something like a RebelSIM in order to achieve this.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

I take it to mean that once you get there, it's time to search. No need to dress that up, I guess.

Aside: Propynyl, you aren't a chemist by any chance, are you?

What the heck do you pay $120 a month for? Oh, that's right I'm still on 2g where the monthly plan is $15 less a month. I have the $39 for 450min + $20 for the unlimited data plus 200 texts plan. That's $59/mo total for my iPhone.

The 3g costs $30 for unlimited and another $5 for 200 texts. That's $15 a month more! There should technically be a sliding scale. The more you pay a month, the faster you pay for your subsidized phone. But they don't look at it that way.

You can go far far away on a plane in 48 hours. They aren't necessarily on the "slow boat from china" anymore.

Right. I can understand the possibility IF it gets flown all the way to Florida, as opposed to being dropped off on the west coast.

Then there's the whole customs issue. I really have no clue on how it works for what i'm assuming is a fleet of cargo planes coming into the US filled with these phones, but that certainly has to have some delay to it.

apple sells iphones on 3 different carriers in Brazil, TIM, VIVO, and Claro see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

I don't think this is unlocked, I just think he bought one from each carrier, or he's a dealer, and sells for all 3 carriers.

haha, doctor...still a science nerd though with a love for chemistry

I ordered on the 9th from at&t to be shipped directly to my house.

And as of about 4 seconds ago, I'm still "In Progress."

Of course, with my luck, it will get delivered early when no one is home to sign for it.

In the same boat, ordered the 9th ... still in progress ...

Bah humbug indeed. Ordered the 9th, picked overnight shipping just for kicks...still "not yet shipped."

Same, and same.

Friday is fine with me, but I do hope it makes it in. I have to go out of town Saturday morning.

Glad to hear some will get them early. I can't believe the guy didn't post a video taken with the 3Gs yet - that's pretty much what most people are wanting to see, right?

Don't they usually include a sticker on the actual shipping package that says: "Do not deliver before 6/19/09"

If so... unless the carrier ignores the shipper's instructions, they won't be delivered until the date prescribed. The tracking computers don't have this information. It's part of the human element of delivery.

Mine says via UPS tracking that it will arrive on the 17th. However, I'm surprised about this - I wonder if Apple will have UPS hold until the 19th.

We ship hardware with UPS all the time, they don't have a control system once its out unless you call for each package and even then it's a crapshoot. If anything it would cost apple more money to force a stop. I think there's a good chance you'll get your as stated. :)

EDIT: You want it bad enough, you can go to the UPS shipping depot once it arrives at your city and give them the tracking number before it gets on a truck.

The 3G opens applications just as fast with the 3.0 software, especially when there is nothing on the phone like in this video. I've been using it for the past week and it's snappy.

I'm running 3.0 on my 3G right now, and it is no way as fast as in the video. When I open settings or the voice memo app, there's definitely a much longer dely than in this video.

Not to put a damper on things but I still feel its pretty unlikely Apple will deliver early. They can hold the shipments until their release...

Agreed. I fully expect UPS to hold my phone until the 19th.

UPS should be able to hold them. They did it for the Harry Potter books. I think a company as big as Apple should be able to manage the same thing.

Of course, I hope not, because I want mine tomorrow.
