You aren't stating any fact whatsoever because you have no insight into where the problem lies, you're just guessing, that my friend is a fact. The fact that you consider their system "a simple tiny pre-order process for an e-commerce site" tells me that no, you don't understand technology, or at least not very well anyways.

Second, you don't know that VERY FEW are getting orders, unless you happen to have contacts at AT&T and Apple that have given you counts of actual pre-orders. Again, another guess on your part.

Third, what does that say about their company and products to me? It says that they have an enormous customer base and they have just released a product that is in extreme demand. I'd think that is exactly the sort of thing that I'd want to hear if I was an Apple supporter (financially that is).

It doesn't matter where the problem is, Apple knew they were going to take an insane number of preorders today and clearly dropped the ball. Not sure why its takes so many posts to just say that Apple has a great product, everybody wants one, and they should have known better and done an adequate job of preparing for the iPhone 4 pre-order.
 
The sad thing is, this isn't going to get any better any time soon. It's 11:14 Eastern, which means that most people in every part of the country are now awake. Which also means that an entire nation of Apple nuts are trying to pre-order.
 
At 9am I had luck getting past the ATT portion, only to have it time out AFTER that.

Still no preorder and I've been trying repeatedly since 9:30 AM EST.

Truth is probably that pre-orders taken through most of this week will arrive right on the 24th, though. I ordered my iPad 3G a full week and a half after the announcement and it arrived the day-of.

I just quit messing around with Apple and ordered directly from ATT. Everything worked smoothly. I have to imagine ATT didn't make their verification service easy to access for Apple. :)

I don't know if this has been said yet and I'm not gonna check all 45+ pages...

If you ever got to the part where you were adding the iPhone to your cart (apple.com) and it timed out, etc., try clicking on the cart. Someone on engadget recommended this and it worked for me. The iPhone was there from 5hrs ago and I paid for and placed my order successfully. Just a heads up!
 
This is all AT&T. I'm convinced it is their servers that are the problem.

Apple servers are no better. I can't even get to the screen where it requests eligibility information any more, and I got past the eligibility verification step at least a dozen times now and Apple's site errors out.

AT&T's site gives me an error as well, but they're both having problems.
 
For what it's worth, I got through to AT&T's Premier Customer Service and they said that they are reworking the servers (or something less than technical like that). He said it would be fixed in "a couple hours". Whether this is affecting Apple's access to accounts, I haven't a clue.

He said they are aware that Premier accounts weren't all showing the 4G as even being available and that will be fixed as well. Oh well...hang in there!
 
I got it on Apple.com

I got really close earlier this morning, then the website gave me an error. Looked just now at my shopping cart in the Apple store. Low and behold it was sitting there waiting to be checked out. After a quick checkout, the order processed. Now just waiting on a confirmation email.
 
AT&T is working for me now!

It just worked for me all the way to the point of "Place order." After clicking it, it told me to Enter my home phone number and shipping address (which I already had), and add a device (the iPhone 4 disappeared from my "cart"). When I clicked to enter my home phone number, it brought me to an error message. Now, I can't even get to the screen to select the phone again.

I knew iPhone 4 was going to be big, but this seems insane.

Like many of us i can't pre order on apples website but i keep reading people saying to check your cart and it should be there....I can't see anything in my cart and I've been trying since 540am EST..people are talking about apple stores cart right and not AT&Ts website??
 
wow. when i thought it couldnt get worse....next to upgrade eligibility for my phone, on the ATT page...for the line I need to upgrade it has turned into this instead:

Apple Store's. But, the people who have had this happen got really far into the ordering process at one point. If you haven't yet, then you're out of luck... like me.

Just try Best Buy, I gave up after 3 hours of unsuccessful attempts :p
I was also able to pre order the white. I posted a while back. Just trying to help people out from the hassle this has turned into.:rolleyes:

I was having trouble accessing AT&T's site: couldn't even stay logged in. Now it's down totally.
 
I was killing time waiting to pre order and noticed something. In the picture gallery for the iphone 4, what are the slotted spaces above the ear mic on the white iphone?

The black iphone does not have them. Just wondering.
