what steps did you take to order through Apple?

i just went back to check the website and it say the maintenance for me as well. Looks like i placed the order JUST in the time *sigh of relief

I got into the apple site, entered my phone number, zip and ssn and nothing happened?

I did this twice? Do they send you some kinda confirmation or do you have to enter any more information?

Can you pick the phone up at any Apple store across the US?

is this happening to others too?

He knows what you said, it just doesn't make any sense.

By the By.....even with all these problems this morning.....Apple's stock is up! Go figure.

I guess analysts are pretty happy with a company whose products generate such a high demand.

Analysts don't buy stock actually... and yes of course it's up (which is why it is a good time to sell), wait for the numbers. People see demand.. I see fail.

What a load of bollocks about the share price, you've a week still to pre-order one, and guess what, they'll still be available after the 24th.

i am in NYC so near a whole bunch of stores, but im thinking the lines are going to be an absolutely nightmare. so picking up they dont really actually reserve you one right? (meanign I cant jus trot in at 5pm and pick it up) They will keep selling till they are sold out? If so, what's the point of reserving one in the store?

i just ordered on ATT on 1st go ..without a problem ... now i feel strange cause i didn't had a problem

I know, you are afraid.. its ok.. Apple is failing today to meet demand. That is an issue. Yes hopefully iphone 4's will be out there for months to come.. Im talking about today. If they can't get a simple pre-order right then I don't want to worry about how they will run their business in the future.

to quote veruca salt from willy wonka " BUT I WANT IT NOOOOOOOOOOOW"

I lol'd.

As far as the phone goes, I guess I'll be getting the black one (no need to pre-order today), but I did want to grab the white one for my better half. I wonder why they excluded it without any dates or reason?

Reserving one reserves it for the day. You can go in during business hours on the 24th and it'll be waiting for you. They'll "release" the next day.

Finally got far enough to reserve an In-Store pickup. It showed a processing error if I wanted to get it delivered, but I was always planning to do in-store pickup anyway. Just printed out the confirmation which says it will be available 7am on the 24th at my local store.

Dangit, I've gotten past the processing page like 5 times now, and it will only let me reserve. Please don't tell me they are out of orders to be shipped...

Your request couldn’t be processed.
We’re sorry, but there was an error processing your request. Please try again later.

Your reservation is confirmed.
Thanks for reserving your iPhone for pickup at the Apple Retail Store on June 24 starting at 7:00 a.m. You’ll receive an email confirmation shortly and we’ll have your iPhone ready and waiting for you when you come in to the store to pick up and pay.

When: Thursday, June 24
Where: SoHo, New York City
What: IPHONE 4 BLACK 16GB-USA
$199.00
What to bring
You must bring the following with you when you visit the store:

A valid, government-issued ID
A debit or credit card
Your Social Security number

^^OK so that was easy- but this doesn't guarantee the phone being there, right? No commitments, but they describe it as if it will definitely be there...

really?? then why isn't everyone doing this...it is really easy to set up, following instructions from the post above...I just said I am adding a new line to my account, when I'm actually not. not like they took real details down or anything.

Are you sure you can change it from a new line to replacing an existing line? I'm not. That's why I haven't done it that way.

I thought about doing the same thing. This method completely bypasses AT&T's eligibility. Hopefully Apple will be able to process it as an upgrade even though it was reserved as a new account.

Looks like Apple changed the behavior of the pre-order. Now when you select "Existing Customer" it instantly tries to start doing something and you get the pinwheel before clicking Continue. Of course, then it errors out...
