Well not really that simple, to be fair there are two reasons.. #1 its over valued, and falling.. and #2 of course apple obviously could care less about a launch of a product that they are betting the farm on.. Apple would not be where it is today without the iphone (share price wise) so a failure to execute on this launch is not favorable for its price action. Thus a sell is probably in my best interest.
Make no mistake about it, this is making it so they can not deliver as many phones on launch as they would like, that will be negatively reflected in their earnings.
i just went back to check the website and it say the maintenance for me as well. Looks like i placed the order JUST in the time *sigh of relief
because on the black one they just have them behind the glass and the glass in front of the sensors is like tinted so taht it looks black but the sensors still work - if you hold it under direct sunlight you can see the sensors behind the glass.
In the white model you can't tint the glass so that its white but the sensors still work, so there's openings
This situation sucks, but they will still sell every phone they can build for launch.
Couldn't take it anymore. I tried for 4 hours on Apple's website. Finally I gave up and ordered the iphone 4 through AT&T's website. Either Apple can't get it together or AT&T verification not playing nice with Apple. 
AT&T just closed it's in store pre-order for NYC. IT needs to figure out how to deal with the volume. Great Job, ATT & SJ. Really. Nobody saw that one coming...

Ok so here is what I did and now I am like well now what do I do?
I qualify for the new upgrade (they changed mine from november to now ) so I can get the new iPhone 4.
Peordered through ATT's website (after numerous times), finally went through gave me an order number and everything yay I said to myself. Checked my bank account and the $211 is pending so as far as I know everything should have gone right since they also gave me an order number.
10 Minutes later I receive an email stating
"Unfortunately, we were either unable to verify the information you provided or you have exceeded the number of lines of service that we allow customers to purchase online. As a result, your order has been canceled. "
Wait how could they not verify my information if they were sucessfully able to already take money (pending) out of my bank account.
Now I went back to ATT's website to check the order status, I first searched by order number and it couldnt it gave me an error but then I searched by wireless number then it brought me to the order status page and still showed the order is good to go.
Then for curiosity I went back to my ATT website to check the bill and noticed that the elegibility had changed to 2011!?
Did I just get Effed in the Aye?

did you do that just now? it was that easy for u just to order it thru ATT? if so, you got lucky!

By the By.....even with all these problems this morning.....Apple's stock is up! Go figure.
I guess analysts are pretty happy with a company whose products generate such a high demand.
UPDATE. WHEN I WENT TO CHECK MY ORDER ON ATT IT SAID COULDNT BE FOUND. LUCKY AT THE SAME TIME I GOT THROUGH TO APPLE AND ORDERED THE IPHONE 4 ON APPLES WEBSITE. SO I AM ASSUMING IT NEVER WENT THROUGH AT&T. i hope i dont get charged twice. im bout to check my account

A workaround....kinda
If your close to an Apple store and can pick it up, click on the "add a new line to my account" option....it skips the AT&T authorization (which I think is the actual problem in all this) and allows you to reserve a phone for pickup at your local store.
You can work out the details on launch day when its in your hands!
- Side note.....this should be all the more reason to add a new carrier Apple!!
