And to think, this is only pre-ordering. Remember how difficult it was to activate the first iPhone? Weren't there some folks that had to wait all weekend to get the phones activated?
Maybe... but activating the 3GS last year wasn't much of a problem. Then again neither was pre-ordering, for me. Guess it's just as well white isn't available though, I won't have to deal with all the servers being overloaded today or on the 24th. Maybe Proclip will have a iPhone 4 mount out by the time white's available.

Has anyone who has successfully got their order to the final phase had any trouble selecting to have their phone reserved for pickup at the Apple Store? The few times I got that far in the past 6 hours, it would only allow me to get it shipped to my billing address (which I won't be around the day of release)

I have the opposite problem. It wouldn't let me ship it (which is what I want), and would only give me the option to reserve.

Yup same here now:confused: Tried to order for my wife and brother but can't login!

Nah, im not worried about the order showing up in their systems yet..I got an email so im content with that  Also, it says it can take 24hrs to show up, I wouldn't doubt it taking longer with the hits their taking now!

I ordered from Apple and mine is the exact opposite. My order shows up in order status, but now e-mail. Like you, I'm not worried about it.

I did the same, but didn't get a confirmation email yet. Should I be worried? It's only been about 10 minutes. Did yours come instantly?

N/M, just got it! For you existing iPhone owners, try the new iPhone app called "Apple Store"

So, I think I'm all set now, by using the new Apple Store app on the iPhone. The ease of the reservation is what has me questioning it's validity. Is it right that I didn't have to enter any payment information?

I'm in the same boat. After many failed attempts at apple.com and a few failures with the Apple Store app, I finally reserved one vis the app but I wasn't 100% sure because it seemed too quick and easy.

This is insane I've been trying to order an iphone for my wife's birthday since 8am this morning, and have only gotten past the ATT section once! I would order through ATT whose website actually seems to functioning, but I'm getting an error when I try to port over her old number. How can these companies worth billions and billions of dollars not set up some sort of system that works for at least 24 hrs!?

This is exactly what Apple (Jobs) wants. He wants people to be consumed by his product and the need to have one. Think about it...this drama has been going on since 4am EST, almost 9 hours straight. Good opportunity here for a reality tv show :)

the iphone apple store app seems to be able to make reservations for in-store pickup - it won't allow you to buy for delivery. i just tried it and was able to reserve it.

i also have one ordered for delivery from att - if they can convince me that it will get to me by thursday i'll keep it otherwise i guess i'll get up EARLY and wate in line.

Wow - good call. Had one in my cart from this morning and am able to check out. Problem is - they still have my home address for billing and I changed it to office to deliver at office on the 24th. Guess I will continue to wait out the AT&T site.

Everyone should check their cart though, if they had any earlier success.

Unfortunately, it says that the phone MUST be shipped to your AT&T billing address.

The email confirmation I got doesn't have any of my AT&T account info in it (it says "Your Rate Plan", "Plan Includes:" and it's just blank). It also shows the full unsubsidized price of $699. Think they'll be able to figure this all out on the day I pick it up?

The reservation process does NOT interact with AT&T at all. You'll notice the quoted price in the e-mail for 32GB is $699. They haven't checked your eligibility, run a credit check... none of that stuff. If you fail on any of those points when you go to pick up the phone you WON'T be leaving with one.

I now have a reservation to pick up a black iPhone 4, 32GB at my local Apple Store according to the iPhone app. It says that the phone will be available for me all day.

Just reserved mine through the app as well. Anyone know if a second can be resereved on the same iTunes account? I wanted to upgrade my wifes as well, but it errors out when trying. Not sure if it is a traffic issue or can't reserve 2 issue.

SJ probably just wants to force everyone to DL the Apple Store app, being the only way to order the phone - his plan all along. good one at that.

too bad i lost my 3G 2 weeks ago :(

Good. Thanks for clearing that up. I'm an existing customer eligible for the 16Gb $199 price but my confirmation email showed the $599 price so I was hoping that would all get sorted out on the 24th. Based on your reply, it sounds like things would be cleared up then?

Thanks, that explains it. Think I'm all set then. Try the "Apple Store" app peeps. I was trying apple.com and att.com all morning. I tried the "Apple Store" app a couple times earlier too without success but this last time it was super quick.

Haven't had time to read the entire string, but just got back from BB, placed my order for a black 32, and noticed that they would have taken my order for a white one if I had wanted it. Sales guy was definitely under the impression that white units would be available. The two customers ahead of me ordering white will be very disappointed/PO'd if they have their hopes dashed.

Yes, it does. My reservation confirmation email showed my $299 price AND my current unlimited data plan. The next two orders I put in (family plan) showed the full prices and no data plan though... weird.

also i know if you order from apple it has to be shipped to your att billing address but if you order through att can you ship to a different address? its showing i can input another address

my confirm email lists my 16GB at $199.......

This works!!

Here's what worked for myself and a bunch of my co workers.

The apple guy at our local store said AT&T is overwhelmed upgrade requests.

So.. Download the apple store app, he said it already has your phones info when you get to the upgrade part, so it's faster and works..
