Unfortunately, the employees at the base Softbank are very Americanized...so I have a feeling they'd just ignore me. lol

Heartless buggers. Have you tried flirting?

iPhone on Softbank

You can SMS out to and receive SMS messages from anyone on Softbank. You can NOT SMS to or from anyone outside of Softbank.

So, you mean that it's possible to SMS on another Softbank phone number, and it's free, right? And if the message gets too long, it will change to an MMS, and then there will be packet charges on both ends (unless you're on unlimited data).

I seem to remember a long time ago (when the company was called J-Phone?) that if you sent a picture to another person, there were packet charges. I think sending pictures evolved (got renamed) into MMS. So, it could be that sending pictures are free between Softbank phones (as White Plan says free MMS) - but I doubt it as that can be quite a bit of data.

It is indeed unlimited SMS and MMS but there are per message limits of 670 double byte characters for SMS and 300kb for MMS. The good news is that apparently it will just throw an error if you attempt to exceed the limits and not lead to extra charges.

I've never tried to MMS, don't even know if it works or how it would apply to your bill.

I've also never seen any charges for my SMSing to other Softbank users but don't take my word for it. lol

I think you mean ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival), mate. DOA = Dead On Arrival. But what do I know. :p

HAHA!! I guess the heat down here is getting to me.

Yes, I was sort of shooting for Date Of Arrival while completely forgetting the traditional meaning of the abbreviation.

With my luck I'll get my iPhone in mid-July or something and it WILL be DOA. :(

Being in the military has taught me one thing. To take an abbreviation and before assuming I know that abbreviation, applying it to the context and trying to figure it out from there.

So many abbreviations in the military are used in multiple places for completely different things.

LOL, you inspired me to look up a few military definitions for DOA:

Dead on Arrival
Department of the Army
Director of Administration
Design Organisation Approval
Data Operations Analyst
Date of Arrival
Days of Ammunition
Designed Overhaul Activity
Desired Order of Arrival
direction of attack
Direction-of-Arrival
Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance

You weren't kidding. :D

My phone is set (not by me) to send S! Mail as standard. If I get an SMS and I reply to it, it replies as an SMS, until I go over the 128 (?) character limit, then it'll ask me if I want to change the message into an S! Mail (MMS).

So, you could be already sending MMSs. If you've ever emailed a picture to someone, then that's an MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service).

There was a time when S! Mail was called Long Mail (back in the J-Phone days) for just text, and Sha-mail if there was a picture involved for sending. Or something like that.

The CEO of Softbank has just posted a message on Twitter saying he regrets that all customers who preordered the iPhone in advance will not be able to get them on Thursday:
RT @masason:
明日木曜日のiPhone4の出荷、初日予約者の全員にはお届けする事が出来なく本当に申し訳ありません。心苦しく思います。

Just got a call from Softbank telling me my iPhone is ready. Apparently they called yesterday but I didn't see the call...

Off I go to pick it up. Hoping it doesn't have yellow tints and bad reception!

Nice one! I hear the bad reception is only if you hold it, so don't hold it if you want to make a call. :p

LOL! Yeah, or maybe if you wear gloves it doesn't affect the reception. That'd be a nice solution too. You have to wonder how an issue on that scale gets through the testing process...

My local SoftBank shop called me around 11:00 today and let me know my iPhone had come in. So I'll head off to pick it up in an hour! Woohoo! So sick of my iPhone 3G being slow.

Awesome! Do post back and let us know if yours has any of these issues that are being reported.

The yellow tinted display thing was a majorly reported issue on the 27" iMac but I never had the slightest hint of any color gradient issues on my own machine so you never know.

Okinawa

Is anyone else on this thread from Okinawa? I am still waiting, haven't heard a peep from the softbank store I ordered from yet. They said when I ordered it that they might not get any stock in till the 25th...

Loving it so far. Took about an hour in the softbank store. They said the store was quiet all day - they received 10 at this store. I was number 3. Phone is beautiful. Screen is nice. No sign of yellow. Great reception so far. Posting this using it...

I got it! The screen is amazing! The camera flash is so bright it made me see stars when I snapped a picture of myself!

I do have the issue with reception dropping while holding the phone while I'm sitting here in front of my computer, although this room has always been a bit shaky with reception. I'll go outside and try again. Hopefully this can be remedied with a software update.

I didn't see any display discoloration but I'll have another look when my phone finishes syncing. I can only see the black 'Sync in Progress' screen now.

The resolution of the Retina Display is so damn good. You really can't see pixels - except that the SoftBank carrier logo in the top left of the screen is a low resolution image (It hasn't been updated from the 3G/3GS resolution) and looks really jaggedy on my screen. Kind of nitpicky but I'd like that to be fixed.

The phone picks up fingerprints like crazy. I think the white one might be better when it comes out.

The SoftBank shop was pretty good. Everything was straightforward - I did get switched over to a new packet plan - Called パケットし放題フラット which isn't a sliding scale packet plan that tops out at 4410 like the old 'iPhone for Everybody Campaign', rather it is a constant 4410 every month. Apparently I get a bigger discount on the kisshudai by switching to this new plan.

They offered me a free FON Wi-Fi router for my house, but I declined because I already have an Apple Airport.

Hope you all get your iPhones soon!

Edit: I don't have discoloration on my display that I can tell. Also, my low-res apps look pretty bad. It'll be resolved as they get updated but I have some old iPhone apps, mostly Japanese ones that have never been updated since they were released. I'm kind of worried that they will be stuck in a low-res limbo forever.

They definitely should have seen that, or maybe they did and didn't think it was a big deal. I'm guessing that the signal drops slightly if you touch the metal siding, which all the antennas are hooked up to.
