Wow.... so much better with the screen protector gone! The entire screen had an artifacting effect with that the built-in defender screen protector. It comes off very easily, and leaves a tiny gap and a little glue/residue that you'll have to make sure to remove. The gap is so tiny and the phone doesn't move around. There's no way it's 1/8".... this is like 1/32" of a gap. I have no desire to put a screen protector on but I'm not sure if the rubber would eventually rub up on it enough to come loose.

Anyway, here are some pictures after I peeled the screen protector off:

Just got mine today. I've read back a few pages and I don't see this mentioned, so I'm wondering ...

Am I the only one disappointed that there are no longer those little membranes covering the earpiece, speaker, and mic? Not to mention the plastic shield (like the screen cover) over the camera? Those were all covered on previous models and I didn't worry too much when walking to my car in the rain, for example; but now with so many openings where air, dust, and moisture can get in, I'm not very happy with my Otterbox. I know there are openings on the other lines, like the Commuter, but the Defender has always been the one that keeps EVERYTHING covered somehow ... be it a plastic shield, a rubber flap, or an unknown-material membrane.

I'm thinking of going to a craft store to try and find a material like what they used in previous cases and adapt this new Otterbox so I've got at least some barrier against dust and tiny amounts of moisture so it's as good as my old ones. I also see that Seidio is coming out with an Innocase Rugged that looks like it MAY cover what Otterbox no longer does ... but it's hard to tell.

Anyone else share my feelings? Am I crazy and overly paranoid? Any other thoughts as to covering the exposed holes in the new case as in the old ones?

What is the point of having a beautiful phone when you have to tank armor it in this ludicrous box?

It makes it twice as thick as the iPhone 4, twice as heavy and not to mention, it's so ugly why would anyone need something like this?

If you are "in the field" working, perhaps, desert storm war battling, you'd need something like this - but then again, you're better off not carrying the phone around at all.

For $50, it's a pricey box but I can see steve jobs just shaking his head in disbelief that anyone would want to wrap their cell phone in this kind of armor.

I agree, it looks to me like that material may be similar to a coffee filter. I work in pretty dusty conditions and I will certainly miss having everything covered, even though it knocks your ringer down in volume tremendously.

You know what's uglier than a large case? A shattered iPhone.

carry your phone with care, you won't have a shattered iPhone 4. I thought my incipio silicrylic case was atrocious, this is even worse. I took my case off, put on a ghost armor films for full body protection (from scratches) - and I'm so happy. Finally after having 3 iphones, I finally get to use it in its original form - without a case.

This is otterbox is just atrocious

Then perhaps don't read threads dedicated to this case?

18 pages of threads - I gotta see what the hype is all about. Never heard of otterbox until this thread and boy, I'm glad I don't own one. Different folk, different strokes I guess.

Glad someone agrees. I was just thinking of trying the coffee filter idea myself, since I have those on hand. May look in a craft shop next time I'm near one if coffee filters don't quite do the trick or if I feel I need something more permanent (don't know if having to apply a new coffee filter each time I take it out would be necessary and get annoying).

If I drive my car with care, should I drop the insurance? Let me know.. thanks for the tip.

Insurance for your car is mainly for liability - that is if you crash into something, someone. You have optional insurance called comprehensive that is if someone breaks into your car, etc.

Liability is required by law - collision coverage is required by your (lien holder; aka bank if car is unpaid)

Well, I'm sure that Steve does no mind having his I4 naked, is he breaks it he should have a draw full of new/free I4's just in case...

I think is more os a matter of preference and wanting to take care of the phone, sure, right now it seems like those that break their I4s kist go to the apple store and get a replacement for free most of the time, but I'm sure that is not gonna last.

I do have one of them coming on the mail, and I don't thing I will have it on at all times, but for most of the time for sure, there have been way too many broken I4s on here already.

I'm sure that many people on here (Including me) would ask you the same question, why would you want to have a phone this expensive, and want to risk dropping it and breaking into pieces?

On a side note does anyone here knows if "weather conditions in Memphis" can delay delivery from FeDex on this case? I just got my tracking number and ordered with over night delivery and was wondering... and before any one says it, yes, I know I could call FeDex, but I don't want to be on the phone for 30 mins to get someone that will just say what ever just to get me off the phone...

I agree that the case takes away from the iPhone4's sleek lines and hides the great design. However, I would imagine that most who buy this case value the protection it provides over the looks of the phone. While there may be some who simply buy the case because they want to portray a certain active/outdoors lifestyle, I don't think there are many who buy the Defender because they think it improves the look of the phone.

Hype? I don't remember reading any hyperbole here from Otterbox or the people who have received the case. Most people seemed satisfied that the built in screen protector turned out better than anticipated, and overall, the case is worth the money spent.

People who say this obviously have no clue why someone may need this type of case. Have you spent a long time on a construction site? They are disgusting, dirty places. People need phones, they need to use them day in and day out, for phone calls and email. With an Otterbox they last much longer and stay in much better condition, etc.. I have a lot of people using iphones, blackberries and android phones and almost all of them use Otterbox cases.

I am the IT guy for a large construction company and everything that comes back from the field after being on a job for a couple years is totally trashed and it's almost impossible to keep anything looking decent. I can spend a day on a jobsite and my laptop is covered in dust and dirt. I wish Otterbox made cases for even more things.

I even spoke to a couple local police officers who commented on my new Otterbox case for the iPhone 4 and they said the whole force uses Otterboxes on their 3G/3GS's.

I guess it's a matter of choice or job. Some of us have jobs where we could use the protection on our phones. I think that it's really just your negative opinion.

considering this is a positive thread about the otterbox your trash post falls on deaf ears, if you dont like it then keep your opinionated ***** to yourself

What kind of pretty boy buys a phone for how it looks? I'll leave that to my 14 year old daughter and her friends, thanks. Otterbox for me. And I hardly work on a construction site. I just want it to be safe until the next version comes out and not have to treat it like a waif.

Damn AHDuke99... That sucks bro!!! your ordered yours a wile ago too...:(

Support told me all orders take 7-10 days to ship when I called them last Friday, so technically it shipped 7 days after I ordered it, but we all know that was BS since many people here received theirs within 3 days. Maybe I'll luck out and it will come in tomorrow by surprise! :p

But I know better.
